MediaTek Kompanio 1300T Processor for 5G Chromebooks

MediaTek has its hands on a good chunk of the Chromebook laptop market, thanks to the efficiency of its processors. Still, it is about to take things to the next level by helping OEMs add affordable 5G to more computers.

The Kompanio 1300T is a 6nm 8-cores processor that can be considered a laptop version of the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 utilized in smartphones. Typically, these laptops (or tablets) processors support a higher temperature (or TDP = thermal design point).

It means they can operate faster and hotter for more extended periods, making them appropriate for computer-like compute workloads which are inherently higher than smartphones’. That said, these ARM-based processors use much less power than your typical PC chip and can have significant advantages when it comes to battery life.

The Kompanio 1300T supports 16GB of RAM and UFS 3.1 for storage. That gives OEMs a good amount of configuration and pricing flexibility in the market segments they target. The support for 120Hz 1440p displays also appears reasonable and more than enough in real-world use cases.

MediaTek’s mobile expertise offers exciting potential for video calls because these platforms have high-powered image processing capabilities in the form of dedicated image processors. That assumes the OEMs would install great hardware (we have a camera hardware benchmark for that).

Built-in 5G wireless broadband is one of the most critical aspects of these upcoming Chromebooks since Chrome OS is a web-based platform. It makes a world of difference in productivity terms when going from indoor WiFi connectivity to an always-connected paradigm. With MediaTek’s new offering, I expect to see more 5G, in more Chromebooks, at more affordable prices: consumers win.

New Kompanio 1300T devices will appear during the third quarter of 2021.

Bear McCreary Was Born to Score Masters of the Universe: Revelation

Kevin Smith’s sequel to the classic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe ‘80s cartoon is an excellent (and frequently shocking) show, and Bear McCreary is part of the reason why.
