HMD Global Launches The Nokia XR20, A Rugged 5G Smartphone

A few years ago, 5G smartphones were almost exclusively high-end flagships, but as the technology becomes more accessible, we are starting to see how 5G is being brought to lower-end devices. In fact, HMD Global has recently announced a new 5G smartphone in the form of the Nokia XR20.

The Nokia XR20 isn’t the most impressive of smartphones we’ve seen, but one of its selling points is that it is a rugged device. So if you’re out in the field often and you need a phone that supports a fast connection but can take a beating, then maybe the XR20 could be just what the doctor ordered.

We’re looking at features like an IP68 rating, which means that it can withstand immersion underwater to a depth of 4.9 feet for up to an hour. It is also MIL-STD 810H rated and can withstand drops from up to 5.9 feet, continue to operate even in extreme temperatures, and it also uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus, which Nokia claims is the toughest screen they’ve used on their smartphones to date.

Under the hood, the Nokia XR20 will feature a 6.67-inch 1080p display and will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 chipset with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It will also sport a dual camera system on the back with a 48MP f/1.79 and a 13MP f/2.4 combo, a 4,620mAh battery, and will also support wireless charging. The Nokia XR20 is expected to be available late August and will be priced at $549.

BlackBerry’s 5G Smartphone With A Physical Keyboard Is Still In The Works

Back in August last year, BlackBerry announced a partnership with OnwardMobility in which they would be launching a 5G smartphone with BlackBerry’s traditional physical keyboard. It’s been almost a year since the announcement and if you totally forgot about it, we can’t say we blame you.

However, it seems that the project is still very much alive and well. While we still have no idea when the phone will launch, which was previously slated for 2021, OnwardMobility has since launched a pre-commitment page which is basically an online waiting list that will notify users when more details about the phone are available.

At the moment nothing much is known about the phone except that it will have 5G. BlackBerry hasn’t made a new phone in quite a while. The company had stopped making their own phones a few years ago, but later partnered with TCL, but that partnership came to an end early last year.

It is interesting that BlackBerry is still interested in making phones, especially one that has a physical keyboard in this day and age where full touchscreen displays have become the norm, but who knows, maybe there’s something about this phone that could spark interest so we’ll just have to wait and see.
