Instagram is about to replace a swiping feature with stickers

Starting next week, Instagram says its users will no longer be able to swipe up on content to open an external link. Instead, the company is getting rid of the useful feature and replacing it with link stickers. Though that will require the user to tap instead of swipe, the company says it’ll offer creators customization options. News of the … Continue reading

Instagram To Replace Swipe Up Gestures For Links With Stickers

For some reason or the other, it feels like Instagram doesn’t really like links or users leaving its platform. Right now, the only clickable links are the ones in your bio, and links pasted in the comments can’t be clicked or copied at all. The next best thing would be in your Instagram Stories, where only some users have the option to create a link in their Stories that you need to swipe up to access.

That being said, as some of you might recall, a couple of months ago, Instagram revealed that they would be testing out allowing users to place links in Stories in the form of stickers, and it looks like that change will be coming soon. This is according to YouTuber Sam Sheffer who got a message from Instagram informing him about the change.

According to the message he received, “Starting August 30, swipe up links will go away. To add a link to your story, use the new link sticker.” Note that this won’t be in addition to the swipe up gesture, but it will be replacing the swipe up gesture completely.

In a way it’s not a bad idea because this might make it more obvious for users where they need to click. It also means that users will now be able to respond to an Instagram Story where before, Stories with the swipe up gesture could not be responded to.

iOS 14.7.1 Is Causing Cellular Connectivity Issues For Some iPhone Users

Not too long ago, Apple released a new update in the form of iOS 14.7.1. This was an update meant to address some bugs in the iOS platform, but it turns out that it did a bit more than that, and not in a good way. This is because according to various user reports, the update has caused them to experience cellular connectivity issues.

According to users who have shared their concerns, following the update, they are now seeing a “No Service” message at the top of their iPhone’s display. It doesn’t seem to be iPhone specific either because users with all different iPhone models are reporting that they are experiencing this problem.

There also doesn’t seem to be any kind of universal fix as some users have luck with some methods, while others can’t get it to work for them. Apple hasn’t officially come forward to say anything yet, so we’re not sure if they know about it. However, the company does have a support document that tells users what to do if they encounter a “No Service” message.

They have also recommended that users check for a carrier update which could potentially fix the problem as well. Either way, there is no telling how widespread this problem is, but if you haven’t updated to iOS 14.7.1 yet, maybe holding off first while this gets sorted might be a good idea.

Google’s Rumored Foldable Pixel Might Have Been Delayed

We have been hearing rumors that Google could be working on developing its own foldable smartphone. Many had anticipated that the device could launch as soon as this year, but it turns out that maybe it might not be happening this year after all.

This is according to a report from 91mobiles who heard from their source that Google has apparently delayed its foldable project. This would suggest that the phone might not launch this year, but it seems that in spite of that, their report claims that Google could actually show a preview of the phone at the Pixel 6 event later this year.

It is unclear why the device has been delayed, but presumably maybe it isn’t up to Google’s standards yet or there could be some technical hurdles that they have yet to overcome. That being said, we reckon it’s probably time for other phone makers to get into the foldables game, a market which is currently dominated by Samsung.

While we have seen some foldables from other handset makers, Samsung is the clear market leader and have already put out three iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold series to date. A foldable Pixel phone could be interesting, and we have heard rumblings that Apple might also be interested in the form factor.

Pixel 6 Might Support 33W Charging

Unlike other Android smartphones, Google’s Pixel phones never really bothered to adopt fast charging, or at least not along the lines of Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, or OnePlus. Instead, the Pixel 5 kind of capped out at 18W, which is decent, but we’re sure that there are some users who probably wished it was a lot faster.

The good news is that this could change with the Pixel 6. According to a report from 91mobiles, their source shared that apparently a lot of 33W chargers have been spotted at Google’s headquarters. This led to the speculation that this could be used to test with the Pixel 6, although they also note that these charging units are being taken back as they will not be included with the phone.

This is similar to what we had heard previously where it was rumored that Google might not include a charger with the Pixel 6, something that companies like Apple and Samsung have already done. This means that users who want 33W charging will need to buy a separate charger themselves, which presumably will also be sold by Google.

Right now there is no word on when the Pixel 6 series will be officially announced, but we expect that we should hear more about it in the coming months.

Facebook Will Bring Video And Audio Calls Back To Its Main App

Facebook’s app back in the day allowed users to chat with friends while browsing the app. However, the company later opted to split up the feature by forcing users to download and use the Messenger app if they wanted to chat with friends or call them for video or audio chats.

For the most part we reckon people have gotten used to this. After all, it has been quite a few years already since these changes were made, but now it looks like Facebook has decided that maybe it wasn’t the best idea after all. According to Bloomberg, Facebook has decided to reverse their decision and bring communications back to its main app.

According to the report, this means that users who want to make video or voice calls to their Facebook friends will soon be able to do so via the main Facebook app. However, if they want to chat, it appears that users will still need to download the Messenger app, so this is kind of like a compromise.

Facebook’s Director of Product for Messenger Connor Hayes said that these changes are being rolled out to a select few users in the US first, which means that it could be a while before we see the feature make its way to more users around the world.

This Vulnerability Lets You Gain Windows Admin Privileges By Plugging In A Razer Keyboard Or Mouse

On Windows computers, there are different user levels, ranging from Guest users and Admins. Obviously the distinction here would be permissions, where those with Admin status can do more to the system and make deeper system level changes compared to a Guest user, which is why it’s important to designate these user levels accordingly.

However, it seems that due to a bug/vulnerability with Razer’s Synapse software, it seems that anyone with a Razer mouse or keyboard can easily give themselves SYSTEM privileges on a Windows machine. This is according to a tweet by @j0nh4t who shared the bug on Twitter.

How this works is that whenever you plug a Razer keyboard or mouse to your computer, Windows will automatically download Razer Synapse, which is the software that Razer uses to control certain settings of its accessories. During the installation process, when Windows prompts which folder you’d like to save the software to, Shift and right-clicking the “Choose a Folder” button will let users launch a PowerShell window.

Since the software has SYSTEM privileges, what this means is that even users who aren’t an Admin will now have admin-level privileges and can do pretty much whatever they want in the PowerShell window. That being said, this exploit hinges on users having physical access to the computer and also having a Razer peripheral with them.

Razer has since commented that a patch is in development that will close off this exploit, but until then, disabling your computer’s USB ports will be one way to secure yourself until this problem is fixed.
