Galaxy Z Fold 3 teardown is as tedious as you might imagine

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is probably one of the most complex smartphones in the market today. In addition to the flexible screen and the hinge that keeps it together, this year’s foldable device also introduces IPX8 waterproof rating and an under-display (or under-panel) camera. All of these contribute to a device that needs to be tightly and securely packed, … Continue reading

Not All Governments Are Fans Of Apple’s CSAM Scanning Plan

Apple’s CSAM scanning feature sounds like a good thing on paper. With the reach that Apple has, they can no doubt do some good work when it comes to contributing to the detection of such illicit material, maybe even saving some lives in the process. However, the potential for abuse has led to many to voice out their concerns.

You would think that governments would actually be thrilled with this feature, but it seems that not all of them are. According to a report from Heise Online, it appears that the German government has expressed some concern over it. This is according to Manuel Hoferlin, the Digital Agenda committee chairman, who feels that Apple is going down a “dangerous path” and that it could undermine “safe and confidential communication”.

It should be noted that Apple’s CSAM scanning feature will only be limited to the US when it launches, at least for now, but despite that, Hoferlin feels like this has the potential to become the “largest surveillance instrument of history”.

Apple has attempted to assuage concerns by saying that their system will be open to audit by third-parties, and that they will also allow users to inspect the root hash database and compare it against the database in the Knowledge Base article. They also say that users can choose not to have their photos scanned by turning off iCloud Photos, meaning that there are options for users to opt out if they’re not comfortable.

IKEA Will Start Selling Clean Energy To Swedish Households

In addition to selling affordable and stylish furniture, it seems that IKEA wants to expand beyond that where they will now start selling clean energy to Swedish homes. What do we mean by this? Basically IKEA wants to sell energy generated by sustainable sources to residents in Strömma, a municipality in Sweden.

According to IKEA’s announcement, “Through the STRÖMMA offer in Sweden, customers can buy affordable, certified electricity from solar and wind, and use an app to track their own electricity usage. Customers who have already bought solar panels from IKEA can also track their own production in the app and sell back the electricity they don’t use themselves.”

Bojan Stupar, Sales Manager IKEA Sweden adds, “IKEA is a home furnishing company, and we want to make it easier for more people to live a more sustainable life at home. Today we offer smart and energy efficient products and services that contribute to prolonging the life of products, reducing waste, saving water, and eating more healthily, as well as reducing electricity usage. Providing solar and wind power at a low price to more people feels like the natural next step on our sustainability journey.”

The company will be selling the electricity under the STRÖMMA plan, which they’re calling an “electricity subscription”. There is no mention of how much this plan will cost, but it’s an interesting direction for the company, who in recent years, has been branching out beyond furniture to smart home gadgets.

YouTube Will Show Video Chapters In Search Results

One of the recent features YouTube has introduced is chapters. What this does is that it allows creators to split their videos into different chapters to make it easier to navigate. Now it seems that YouTube will be taking advantage of chapters and will use it in search results to bring up more accurate videos.

This means that if you’re searching for something specific, instead of showing you the whole video, in which some parts might not be relevant, YouTube will now start to show the relevant chapters. This is pretty cool and it should save users a few extra steps when it comes to searching for the video that they want.

Other changes that YouTube will be bringing to the table include previews on mobile search results, so you can see a short clip before actually clicking on the video. YouTube is also expected to expand to other languages in its search results, where if they can’t find what you’re looking for in your main language, it will try to search for content in other languages and will show automatically translated captions, titles, and descriptions.

According to YouTube, this will mainly apply to English-language videos first and is currently being tested in India and Indonesia, but there are plans to consider expanding to more locations based on user feedback.

Galaxy S22+ battery might take a step back in size

It is almost expected that every new smartphone generation improves on the previous one, usually with upgraded specs. Unless there was a big problem in an older model, that usually means bigger, better, or more hardware. There are times, however, when companies inexplicably backtrack on something and use a less impressive component for a next-gen phone. That might be the … Continue reading

iOS 15 Will Let Users Choose Between Safari’s Old Or New Design

One of the changes that will be coming in iOS 15 would be Safari. Apple gave the browser a rather radical facelift when they first announced it at WWDC. One of the changes was the URL bar where Apple decided to bring it to the bottom instead of keeping it at the top. This was an interesting and odd choice given that people were used to it being at the top.

However, the reasoning for this is that it would make it better for one-handed use, but still, it was controversial enough that throughout the entire iOS 15 beta, Apple had to keep revising Safari’s design to tone it down. However, in the latest iOS 15 developer beta, it seems that Apple has introduced a setting that will let users choose between the new or old design.

This means that if you can’t stand the new design and can’t get used to the layout, you can always opt to keep using the old design instead. However, the problem is we’re not sure if Apple plans to maintain support for the old design for an extended period of time.

We imagine that over time Apple will want to make changes and improvements to Safari based on the new design, and this means that for those who opt to use the old design, they might not benefit from these changes. Either way, that’s a problem for the future, but in the meantime for those who dislike the new design, then this option should be good news for you.

No Charger In The Box For Google’s Pixel 6

When Apple decided that they would not be including a charger with the iPhone 12, many were quick to mock the company and call them out on it. However, it didn’t take long for some of Apple’s detractors to ultimately follow suit, which included the likes of Samsung, and now it seems Google will be hopping on board the bandwagon as well.

According to a report from The Verge, it appears that Google will not be including a charger with the upcoming Pixel 6 smartphones. Google has typically included an 18W charger with every Pixel phone, but it seems that they have decided that they will no longer be doing that with their next phone.

The company says that since most people already own a USB-C charging brick, there is really no need to include one anymore. This is kind of the same logic that Apple and Samsung have used, where since a lot of chargers these days already support USB-A or USB-C, there is no need to make a new one that will only contribute to electronic waste.

Apple goes one step further by saying that by not including the charger, it makes the entire packaging smaller, which in turn allows them to ship more units at a time and can cut down on the number of trips they make, lessening pollution in the process.

Intel Will Be Stopping Work On Its RealSense Cameras

Gadgets like the Xbox Kinect and Intel’s RealSense cameras are actually pretty cool pieces of technology, where they use AI and cameras to help track objects and people. In fact, Xiaomi’s recently-announced CyberDog uses Intel’s RealSense cameras to help navigate itself around and to avoid obstacles.

However, it seems that maybe the consumer market just isn’t ready for these types of technology yet because following in Microsoft’s footsteps, it looks like Intel will be stopping the work on its RealSense cameras. This was confirmed to CRN by Intel where a spokesperson issued a statement.

According to the Intel spokesperson, “We are winding down our RealSense business and transitioning our computer vision talent, technology and products to focus on advancing innovative technologies that better support our core businesses and IDM 2.0 strategy.” The spokesperson added, “We will continue to meet our commitments to our current customers and are working with our employees and customers to ensure a smooth transition.”

Speaking to CRN, Kent Tibbils, the VP of marketing at ASI, a company that distributes RealSense products, said the news wasn’t surprising. “There were only a few that were buying multiple units, like 10 to 40 at a time. It was definitely very nichey and very specialized for the general channel. It wasn’t a huge product.”

It would have been interesting to see what the world and technology could have looked like if Intel were to have kept RealSense around, but for now, it looks like Intel will be passing on the baton.
