OnePlus 6 and 6T Android 11 upgrade arrives after a very short beta

OnePlus’ rollout of OxygenOS 11 with Android 11 hasn’t exactly been uneventful. OnePlus 7 and 7T owners got hit hard the hardest with numerous bugs and a promised feature that was inexplicably removed at the last minute. The company also started the beta for the OnePlus 6 and 6T series just last month, suggesting it would be months before a … Continue reading

Samsung’s New Smartwatches WIll Not Support iOS Devices

The thing about the Apple Watch is that you basically need to own an iPhone in order to use it. This is versus Wear OS devices or other platforms in which you could pair it with an iPhone. However, that seems to be changing with Samsung’s newly-announced Galaxy Watch 4 series.

For those who missed the announcement, these are the latest smartwatches from Samsung which will also be running the new Wear OS platform that they collaborated with Google on. What’s interesting is that possibly as a result of this collaboration, the new Galaxy Watch 4 watches will not support iOS.

This means that if you own an iPhone and have been using it together with Samsung’s older Galaxy Watch series, the latest model will no longer play nice with Apple’s mobile platform. However, Samsung did confirm to ArsTechnica that as far as older Galaxy Watch devices are concerned, they will remain compatible with iOS and that they will continue to support it for now.

We’re sure that there are going to be some iPhone users who will be disappointed by this, but to be fair there are still plenty of non-Apple Watch alternatives out there, so hopefully these users will be able to find something else.

Razer’s New Hammerhead True Wireless Earbuds Comes With RGB Lighting

If there is one thing that Razer is known for, it would be for their love of adding RGB lighting to just about everything, whether it be their keyboards, mice, microphones, mouse pads, and so on, so it doesn’t really come as a surprise that they are adding lighting to their audio products as well.

Take for example Razer’s recently announced Hammerhead True Wireless earbuds. These are a new set of wireless earbuds for gamers where they will come with features like a 60ms low latency Gaming Mode, active noise cancellation, and of course, Razer Chroma RGB to help make the entire setup pop.

If the Hammerhead brand is familiar to you, it is because the company launched the first iteration of the Hammerhead True Wireless back in 2019. The company later announced a $200 “Pro” version, which kind of doubled the price of the earbuds, but in case you don’t want to pay that much, the new model will retail for $130 (a $30 increase over the originals).

According to Razer, with both RGB and active noise cancelling turned off, you can expect about 6.5 hours of playtime on a single charge, and an additional 26 hours with the charging case; or if you want both RGB and noise cancelling on, it will last you about 4 hours and 20 minutes.

Owlet’s New Smart Socks Will Work For Older Children

When kids are sick, sometimes they don’t know how to express themselves properly, which can lead to treatment being unnecessarily delayed. Sometimes some symptoms aren’t always painful and kids might not know that there’s something wrong with them. Owlet has attempted to address this with their smart socks.

The company has announced their latest pair in the form of the Smart Sock Plus which will come with features like a heart rate sensor, pulse oximeter, and also sleep tracking. Prior to this, the company’s smart sock was only available for infants and babies, but with the Smart Sock Plus, it will be usable with kids up to five years old, or those weighing under 55 pounds.

The company claims that they were inundated with requests from parents to use the sock past the 18 month cutoff, and they said that they have now updated their algorithms to take into account for older kids, but otherwise the functionality should remain the same.

That being said, this smart sock doesn’t exactly come cheap. The regular version is priced at $299, but if you want the Smart Sock Plus for your older kids, those will retail for $359. At those prices, we have to wonder if maybe buying a kids smartwatch might be a better idea.

WhatsApp data transfer between Android and iOS is finally here

Before its acquisition by Facebook, WhatsApp was considered one of the more secure mainstream messaging services around. That was thanks to its end-to-end encryption that few of its rivals offered back then. While a boon for privacy and security, E2EE also has an unfortunate drawback that WhatsApp may not have anticipated in those days. Now the Facebook-owned chat platform is … Continue reading

Galaxy Z Fold 3 gets Microsoft apps designed for foldables

For several years now, Samsung and Microsoft have enjoyed a partnership that gave preferential treatment to Galaxy phones. At first, that simply manifested as pre-installed Microsoft apps that, naturally, people considered bloatware or special offers on some Microsoft subscription services. That partnership eventually bore more fruit, like deep integration with Windows 10, as well as the new versions of its … Continue reading

Apple Looking Into Using The AirPods To Measure Respiratory Rates

Can headphones be used for health purposes? In the past, we have seen how some companies have built sensors into their earphones or headphones that can be used to track certain vitals, like our heart rate, for example. Now it seems that Apple is also exploring a similar idea, according to a recent study they posted on their Machine Learning Research page.

The report, which was spotted by MyHealthyApple, suggests that Apple is interested as to whether or not the AirPods can be used to measure the respiratory rate of the wearer. What’s interesting about this is that it doesn’t actually use any new sensors, but rather it measures the wearer’s breathing rate from the AirPods’ microphone.

According to Apple, “While sensors such as thermistors, respiratory gauge transducers, and acoustic sensors provide the most accurate estimation of a person’s breathing patterns, they are intrusive and may not be comfortable for everyday use. In contrast, wearable headphones are relatively economical, accessible, comfortable, and aesthetically acceptable.”

This technique isn’t exactly new as there are some sleep tracking apps that attempt to track sleep not by your movements, but your breathing/snoring.

Whether or not this study could see Apple introduce new health/fitness features to the AirPods remains to be seen, but the company has stated in the past that they do see the potential in the AirPods to have health tracking features in the future.

Animal Shelter Uses Tinder To Help Their Animals Find New Owners

Tinder is a dating app that we’re sure many have heard of. Its swipe-left and swipe-right feature has made its way into pop culture already, and it is one of the more popular dating platforms right now. But could Tinder be used for things other than dating? That’s what an animal shelter in Germany wanted to find out.

The Munich Animal Welfare Association recently decided to use Tinder as a platform to help them bring awareness to the various animals that they foster. They created profiles for their sheltered animals and put them on Tinder, using an advertising agency to help them snap some professional headshots for 15 cats and dogs.

Speaking to Reuters, Jillian Moss who works at the shelter said, “The response is insane. It’s exploding everywhere.” Benjamin Beilke, who works on Tinder’s communications team, added, “We hope that these animals really find a new partner, a ‘purrfect match’ in the long term and not just for a few weeks.”

It is an intriguing and fun idea to help bring awareness to people who might not realize that their local shelter could have a lot of animals who are simply looking for a loving home. Who knows, maybe this idea will catch on and we could see other animal shelters adopt a similar approach.

Proposed Legislation Could Force Apple And Google To Give Up Some Control Over Their App Stores

Right now, if you wanted to purchase something from either Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store, you’d have to use either Apple or Google’s payment system. For the most part this is fine for end-users, but less-so for developers who are typically forced to give a cut to either company as a result.

This 30% cut is being contested right now and over in the US, a bipartisan group of US senators have introduced legislation that could ultimately force Apple and Google to give up some control over their app stores.

The legislation is penned by Senators Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, and is also co-sponsored by Amy Klobuchar, who is the chair of the Senate antitrust subcommittee.

One of the provisions of the legislation is a clause that would effectively prevent app store marketplace owners, like Apple and Google, from forcing developers to use a payment system that they own. If this sounds familiar, it is because it is similar legislation that was introduced in South Korea about a week ago.

Of course, whether or not this will be passed into law remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that there is a mounting pressure on companies like Apple and Google to ultimately reduce the cut that they get and to give developers more control.

Fortnite v17.30 hotfix adds Prop-ifier, a powerful new disguise item

Fortnite players have access to a new defensive item that, rather than attacking opponents, helps protect you from them. The Prop-ifier is, as its name suggests, a device that allows players to disguise themselves as items in their immediate vicinity. The disguise enables players to hide in tricky situations or catch an opponent by surprise. Until now, Fortnite players had … Continue reading
