Panasonic Toughbook 55 MK2 refresh brings Thunderbolt 4, dual SIM support

The majority of the laptops we cover here revolve around models designed for the consumer market, whether casual computer users, gamers, or anything in between. Those, of course, aren’t the only ones that need portable computers, and those who work in industrial areas or field operations aren’t well-served by this class of notebooks. Panasonic’s TOUGHBOOK line has long catered to … Continue reading

2022 iPhones and Macs might run on 3nm processors

Smartphones and laptops are getting more powerful every year, but those improvements do carry some costs, like power consumption and thermal output. It isn’t enough to just cram in more battery or add cooling fans inside, and some strategies to counter those side effects involve shrinking down components. Processors, for example, grow increasingly smaller to squeeze out more performance and … Continue reading

Signal disappearing messages can now be the default for new chats

There are many popular messaging platforms today that advertised a lot of privacy features, including that much-desired but controversial end-to-end encryption or E2EE. While WhatsApp is known for that feature, it isn’t exactly the first nor the most popular in that area. Signal remains one of the most recommended privacy-minded messaging apps, and it is taking one small step further … Continue reading

iPhone 13 Could Support Portrait Mode For Video

One of the camera features we’re seeing in a lot of smartphones these days is portrait mode, where it basically tries to emulate the effects of bokeh that you would normally get from a traditional camera. However, for the most part, this is limited to photos, not videos, but that could change in the iPhone 13.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, he claims that one of the features of the iPhone 13 is that Apple could finally bring Portrait Mode to videos. This might be useful for videographers who are trying to achieve the look of an out-of-focus background but in video. We imagine that the reason for not including Portrait Mode for videos is because of the continuous need to try and track the subject while maintaining a blurred background.

This might be achieved with an updated LiDAR scanner that could use new algorithms to help with tracking. Gurman’s report also claims that another feature of the iPhone 13’s cameras is ProRes. This is a format developed by Apple over a decade ago and is used in software like Final Cut Pro.

It is possible that bringing ProRes to the iPhone could indicate Apple’s plans to make iPhone footage work better with their own software, and maybe encourage professionals to use the iPhone to capture video.

Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 5 Tablet Is Official

Android tablets these days aren’t exactly a very common sight. This is because it’s hard to try and dethrone Apple’s iPad, but that hasn’t stopped some manufacturers from trying. In fact, if you are after a new tablet but don’t want to pay the Apple tax, then maybe Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 5 could be the tablet for you, especially since it looks awfully a lot like the iPad Pro.

The Mi Pad 5 will be offered in a regular and a Pro version. Both models will sport an 11-inch display with a 2560×1600 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, along with TrueTone display technology and support for Dolby Vision and HDR10. Xiaomi claims that the displays can also go up to 500 nits in brightness, for those who are worried that it might be too dim.

Under the hood, the Mi Pad 5 will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 860, while the Pro will be powered by the Snapdragon 870, which will also be offered in a WiFi-only model and also 5G-enabled version. The regular Mi Pad 5 will sport a single 13MP camera on the back while the Pro will offer a dual 13MP + 5MP camera combo.

The tablet will pack an 8,720mAh battery (8,600mAh for the Pro model) with support for 67W fast-charging. Other features also include an optional keyboard case accessory and also a stylus. As for price, the Mi Pad 5 will start at $310, while the Pro version will start at $385, making this a much more affordable alternative to the iPad or iPad Pro.

3nm iPhones And Macs Expected To Arrive In 2022

Right now, Apple’s iPhones are using the A-series chipset in which the latest model, the A14, is built on the 5nm process. This is the same for the M1 chipset used to power Apple’s newer Mac computers. The A15 chipset, which is expected to debut later this year, will continue on that same but improved process.

That is expected to change in 2022 because according to the latest DigiTimes report, Apple’s 2022 lineup is expected to be using chipsets built on the 3nm process. This might sound rather technical to most, but the gist of it is that the smaller the process is, the smaller the distance is between the processor components.

This is like a driving route, where if the distance to your destination is shorter, you’ll spend less time driving and also use up less fuel. In the case of processors, it means that they will be able to perform more efficiently while being more energy-friendly. Whether or not the differences can be felt in real-life usage is a different story, but from a technical standpoint, it’s a good thing.

Next year is also where along with the A16 chipset, Apple could debut the M2/M2X/M3, so it should be rather exciting as far as technology developments are concerned.
