Amazon delays employee office return until 2022 amid COVID-19 surge

After previously announcing it expected corporate employees to return to the office on September 7th this year, Amazon has announced a further delay until January 3rd, 2022, Reuters has reported. The change of plans comes amid a surge of the highly contagious COVID-19 Delta variant across the US. “As we continue to closely watch local conditions related to COVID-19, we are adjusting our guidance for corporate employees,” the company said in a statement.

Shortly after the pandemic started, Amazon said it expected employees to return to the office in October of 2020. That date was pushed back to 2021 as multiple waves of the virus forced lockdowns and business closures across the US.

Google and Microsoft also recently announced that they’d be pushing back office returns until October 2021, later than the September date that Microsoft originally planned. However, while both Google and Microsoft require that any employees returning to the office be vaccinated, Amazon has said that unvaccinated employees may return as long as they wear masks.

Like other tech companies, Amazon has allowed for a hybrid office/home work structure due to the pandemic. However, in March this year, it seemed eager to get everyone back to the office. “Our plan is to return to an office-centric culture as our baseline. We believe it enables us to invent, collaborate, and learn together most effectively,” the company said in its vaccination and testing blog. Now, that will be delayed for at least another five months.

Uber CEO Says Requiring Vaccines for Drivers and Riders Would be Fair, But Not Happening

There are two types of people in Uber’s world, according to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi: office workers and drivers. Besides differences in salaries and benefits, there will now be another factor that separates the two. Office workers will be required to get vaccines in order to go to work, but drivers will not.

Did Pippin from The Lord of Rings Just Promote a New Cryptocurrency Called ‘JRR Token’?

As if we didn’t have enough scam-ridden cryptocurrency out in the world already, on Friday a new coin based on The Lord of the Rings will enter the market. ASUS And Noctua Could Be Working On A RTX 3070 GPU

When it comes to PC cooling solutions, a lot of people go with liquid cooling for the CPU, but PCs still need the use of fans to suck cool air in and blow hot air out, and when it comes to PC fans, Noctua is kind of legendary in that regard. The company’s brown-colored fans are iconic and they are renowned for having some of the best fans out there.

So much so that if you are a PC enthusiast, then you should be pretty excited to learn that ASUS and Noctua could be working together on a new GPU. This is according to reports in which based on a filing with the EEC, a certain “RTX3070-8G-NOCTUA” was mentioned, which honestly leaves little to the imagination.

That being said, apparently this alleged partnership isn’t new. According to a report from Hwcooling, there were talks about such a partnership in late July, but neither company has confirmed or denied them. It will be interesting to see if this partnership is true, and if the GPUs will come in Noctua’s trademark brown color like the renders above.

Either way, take it with a grain of salt but if the partnership is real, we expect that we will be hearing the official details soon enough.

Ransomware Attack Forces Hospital To Turn Away Ambulances

Some hacks are annoying, but some hacks can be extremely disruptive and even potentially life-threatening. Take for example where according to recent reports, Eskenazi Health, a hospital located in Indiana, has been forced to turn away ambulances arriving at its hospital with patients due to a ransomware attack.

For those who are unfamiliar, ransomware attacks are where a computer’s systems are encrypted by the hacker and the owner will have to pay a ransom to get the encryption key, if not all the data will be lost forever. For hospitals, this means that they might be locked out of their systems and will not be able to pull up patient files that might contain critical information like past medical records, allergies, and so on.

In this instance, the hospital attempted to stay ahead of the hackers by taking some of their services and operations offline to prevent further breaches, but this also meant that in turn, they would be crippling themselves, but we suppose it was necessary until it can be sorted out. According to the hospital, it seems that patient and employee data were not affected.

This is not the first time we’ve seen hospitals targeted by ransomware attacks and it’s not hard to see why they might make such tempting targets. This is because the files and systems used by hospitals are crucial in their day-to-day operations, and time is not necessarily a luxury that they have to sort it out and it would just be easier to pay the ransom.

The Nintendo Switch Has Outsold The PS3 And Xbox 360

Following the disaster that was the Nintendo Wii U, many were understandably worried about how well the Switch would do as its successor. Fast forward to today, it seems that those concerns have all been alleviated because according to Nintendo’s most recent financial results, the Switch has sold extremely well.

According to the figures released by Nintendo, they have shipped 89.04 million units of the console to date. This still puts it slightly behind the likes of the Wii which sold over 100 million, but it means that the Switch has ultimately outsold other popular consoles like the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.

For context, the PS3 managed to sell 87.4 million units in its lifetime, while the Xbox 360 managed 86 million units. The PS2 on the other hand is still holding the record at 155 million units, so it remains to be seen whether or not the Switch will have what it takes to beat it. Comparing the Switch to older consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 doesn’t really seem that fair, but it’s just for context to show how well the console is doing.

Nintendo also doesn’t seem to have plans to launch a successor, with the most recent refresh saw the company replace the screen with an OLED display and a new kickstand, but otherwise it’s still the same.

'Evil Dead: The Game' is delayed until February 2022

Last year, Boss Team and Saber Interactive announced that Evil Dead: The Game with Bruce Campbell reprising his original movie role would arrive sometime in 2021. Now, the developers have tweeted out an update with a specific and slightly later release date: February 2022.

The reason for the delay is to “give the team some extra time for polish and to ensure this is the ultimate Evil Dead experience you’re all waiting for,” the team tweeted. “This additional time is also allowing us to implement a single-player option that will let you enjoy the game when you are without your co-op compadres.”

As we saw in the launch trailer in December, Campbell’s Ash along with Kelly and crew have to work together to fight Deadites led by a powerful demon. You can think of it as a Dead by Daylight-style asymmetric title with a chainsaw hand and Bruce Campbell’s clever catchphrases. It also comes with a big dollop of nostalgia with familiar characters, locales and plenty of gore in the form of blood-soaked zombies.

Evil Dead: The Game will offer “multiplayer co-op and PvP for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch,” according to the developer’s website. They advised that you stay tuned to their Twitter page “for more information about new character updates, pre-order availability, and the next gameplay video featuring Bruce Campbell.”
