This Self-Driving Truck Made It Cross-Country 10 Hours Faster Than A Human Driver

Self-driving cars are a great idea in terms of convenience and potentially safety once they become the norm, but it seems that for businesses, self-driving vehicles might also be better in terms of efficiency. This is according to TuSimple, a company focused on self-driving tech for heavy-duty trucks.

The company wanted to find out how self-driving trucks compared against trucks driven by humans, and so they loaded a truck with watermelons and drove it from Arizona to Oklahoma. The truck had a human driver that took control of the wheel for the first 60 or so miles, but after that it was driven entirely by the computer.

According to the driving time, the truck took about 14 hours and 6 minutes to complete the journey. This is 10 hours faster than if a human driver were to do it, which based on an estimate, would have taken 24 hours and 6 minutes. This is pretty crazy because it means that delivery times can be shaved off massively, which in turn could help companies restock faster, manufacture goods faster, and so on.

The results aren’t that surprising though. This is because humans need rest and there is a law that prevents truck drivers from being on the road for longer than 14 consecutive hours, meaning that at some point in time, they will have to stop and rest, which no doubt adds to the overall trip’s duration.

AirPods Pro Beta Firmware Introduces Conversation Boosting Feature

As expected from a lot of wireless earbuds these days, not only are they great for listening to music and audio, but they can also be used for calls. However, the quality of the microphone and how it picks up audio will vary from device to device, but with iOS 15, Apple will be improving on the AirPods Pro.

In fact, it seems that in the latest beta firmware, Apple has added support for Conversation Boost. For those unfamiliar, Conversation Boost is a feature that will be arriving in iOS 15 that will leverage the beamforming microphones of the AirPods Pro to help boost the level of conversations, as the name implies.

This means that in theory, your voice calls should be clearer and louder with the feature. It will also be useful for those who might have a hearing impairment as the louder volumes should make it easier to hear what’s being spoken during a call. Since the feature has been added in the latest beta firmware, registered developers should be able to access it.

iOS 15 is currently set for a release later this fall. Apple hasn’t specified a release date yet, but it should most likely be available alongside the new iPhones that are expected to be announced this September.

NVIDIA ARM acquisition deemed a national security risk in the UK

NVIDIA is already making big plans on its investments in the Arm ecosystem, most of which hinges on its acquisition of the UK-based company currently owned by Japan’s SoftBank. We haven’t heard much about the status of that process recently, but the latest news that has just surfaced isn’t that encouraging, at least for NVIDIA. The acquisition has already been … Continue reading

Amazon Will Pay You $10 For Your Palm Print

Last year, Amazon revealed their plans to introduce palm recognition and palm scanning as a way for customers to pay for goods at its physical retail stores. It was later eventually introduced to Whole Foods back in April earlier this year, and it seems that Amazon really wants customers to start signing up for it.

This is because palm scanning is an optional method of payment, meaning that you don’t have to use it if you don’t want to, but like we said, Amazon seems to really want people to start using it. So much so that the company has announced that they will be paying customers $10 if they were to enroll their palm prints at its stores and link it to their Amazon account.

That being said, while we can recognize the potential of palm scanning to facilitate payments in a more efficient and hygienic manner, one has to question what Amazon plans to do with your biometric data. It is clear that this data can be used to track your shopping habits, which in turn might be used for targeted advertising. Amazon claims that your palm prints are stored indefinitely, unless you opt to delete the data or if you don’t use it for two years.

Speaking to TechCrunch in an email, Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of the New York-based Surveillance Technology Oversight Project was critical of Amazon’s efforts. “Biometric data is one of the only ways that companies and governments can track us permanently. You can change your name, you can change your Social Security number, but you can’t change your palm print. The more we normalize these tactics, the harder they will be to escape. If we don’t [draw a] line in the sand here, I am very fearful what our future will look like.”

Klipsch Debuts A Pair Of True Wireless Earbuds With Artificial Intelligence

When it comes to headphones, they’re just meant to play audio into our ears. The main differences between headphones would be its audio quality. However, over the years, we’ve started to see more manufacturers introduce features to their headphones to help distinguish them from the competition.

In fact, that’s what Klipsch is doing with its brand new Klipsch T5 II True Wireless Earbuds which according to the company, leverages the use of artificial intelligence. So what does this mean? According to Klipsch, this means that the earbuds are powered by the Bragi operating system.

This OS will allow the earbuds to support features like hands-free gestures so you can control the headphones without using your hands. For example, you can nod your head to accept incoming calls, or shake your head to reject them or to skip tracks. It also features things like a “Noise Shield” that protects your ears from unexpected loud noises while using the earbuds in Transparency Mode, and more.

As for sound quality, Klipsch says that they have equipped the earbuds with Dirac HD Sound technology that will help enhance the overall sound from them. To top it off, there are features like active noise cancellation and wireless charging, just to name a few. If you’re keen, the Klipsch T5 II earbuds are priced at $299.

Microsoft Halts Windows 365 Trial Sign Ups Due To Overwhelming Popularity

Microsoft has announced that they will be hitting pause on Windows 365 trial sign ups. According to a tweet by Scott Manchester, the director of program management for Windows 365, this is because of the overwhelming popularity of the service, where they have received “unbelievable response” to it.

For those who are unfamiliar, Windows 365 is a new service by Microsoft. For a starting price of $20 a month, users will be able to stream a copy of Windows to pretty much any device, whether it be to a computer, a phone, or a tablet. This isn’t an alternative to Windows 10 or 11, but rather a streaming platform in which you would be able to stream Windows 10 and 11 (eventually).

The idea is that it would make it easier for remote work access where you could stream your “work” computer to your home computer so files don’t get compromised. It also makes it easier to set up instead of having to purchase and set up your own server and hire IT admins, which might be an expensive process if you’re a smaller company.

Right now Windows 365 is limited to just enterprise users, but it has a lot of potential and we wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft eventually opened it up to everyone. The company does not state when sign ups for the trial program will resume, but you can leave your details on Microsoft’s website and get notified when it becomes available again.
