M1 MacBook Screens Are Cracking During Normal Usage

Usually when a laptop’s screen is cracked or damaged, it is more often than not a result from a fall/drop or being mishandled properly. Very rarely would it ever crack on its own, but that’s not the case with M1 MacBooks. This is according to multiple user reports from M1 MacBook owners who claim that their screens are cracking seemingly out of the blue.

According to 9to5Mac reader Ian Probert, “I have an M1 Macbook Pro. I purchased it in March 2021. Yesterday morning I opened it up to discover cracks in the screen. I contacted Apple and was forced to pay £570 upfront in order for them to repair it. I told them that I had done nothing to damage the screen but their response was that their technicians would decide if I had damaged it and would, in that case, lose my money.”

Subsequent reports from the Apple Support Communities and Reddit have revealed that there are multiple users who are experiencing the same thing. According to the comments, some are suggesting that dirt or debris could have gotten trapped on the bottom section which could cause the display to crack when it is shut.

This is similar to the reason Apple has given users when they advised users not to use a webcam cover with their MacBooks as it could damage the display when it is closed. Another user suggested that maybe the frame of the laptops are too weak to protect the display from the torque force as it is being closed. Either way, some users have managed to get their laptops replaced for free, while others have been charged.

We’re not sure how widespread of an issue this could be, but if you own an M1 MacBook, it could be something to keep an eye out for.

Apple To Complete Their Apple Silicon Transition By November 2022

When Apple first announced their plans to transition from Intel to Apple Silicon, the company stated that they expect this transition to be completed over the course of two years. So far, the company has made a fair amount of progress where they have transitioned some of their lower-end computers to Apple Silicon.

But what about their more powerful Macs? Will Apple be able to meet their deadline? According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, yes they will, but it will be close. In the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, Gurman claims that Apple is expected to make the full transition over to Apple Silicon by November 2022.

Gurman claims that this roadmap will also include the Mac Pro, which was recently rumored to continue using Intel processors. It is possible that maybe the Mac Pro could be offered in two configurations, but that’s just speculation on our end. Right now, Apple is rumored to be working on a MacBook Pro refresh for later this year that will see the company launch new 14-inch and 16-inch models powered by the rumored M1X.

Once that’s done, all that remains is the 27-inch iMac and the Mac Pro, as everything else has since been updated to the M1 chipset.

Telegram Now Supports Video Calls With Up To 1,000 Users

One of the selling points of Zoom was that it could support a large number of users at any given time. This made it useful for companies to host meetings while their employees worked from home, or for schools to host classes and lectures that would typically have 50 or more students at once.

However, it seems that Telegram wants to challenge Zoom on that front. The company has announced an update to its platform where it seems that Telegram’s group video calls can now support as many as 1,000 users at once! This is a crazy amount of people but it should be noted that this is only for people who are tuning in.

This does not mean that there will be 1,000 people with their cameras and microphones on, but rather 1,000 who can tune into a group video call, so in a way it’s kind of like Telegram is hosting a live stream rather than a massive video conference. According to Telegram, 1,000 is just the beginning as the company plans to eventually expand on this number “until all humans on Earth can join one group call”, although we’re not sure if that’s their real intention or just marketing hyperbole.

There are a bunch of other new features, changes, and fixes in the new update so make sure you have the latest version downloaded.
