Google Drive suggestions in Chrome could raise antitrust red flags

Google has so many products that it’s not really surprising to see it trying to connect the dots across its different properties, like Android, Search, and Chrome. What may sound natural, however, isn’t always desirable or even legal in some cases, especially when businesses are involved. That is why the company has been embroiled in numerous monopoly and antitrust lawsuits, … Continue reading

Nintendo Switch Developers Say They Have Been Using 4K Dev Kits

When Nintendo announced their latest Switch upgrade, it wasn’t the 4K beast that many had hoped for. It was mostly the introduction of an OLED screen, but other than that it more or less remained the same internally as the previous model. While some have praised the inclusion of OLED, there are some who did hope that Nintendo would have released a bigger upgrade.

However, it seems that despite the marginal upgrade, Nintendo could have bigger plans for the future of the console. This is according to a report from Bloomberg which cites several developers from at least 11 game studios who claim that they have been working on games on a 4K Nintendo Switch dev kit.

For those unfamiliar, a dev kit is essentially a testing platform for developers to create and test their games on to ensure it works ahead of its release. In some instances, especially for bigger studios, they might be sent dev kits in advance so that they can prepare games in time for a console’s launch.

The fact that these developers are working using 4K dev kits has led to speculation that a 4K Switch is still in the cards. However, Nintendo told Bloomberg that their information is “inaccurate” but declined to expand further.

That being said, with 4K becoming more or less the standard resolution these days, we reckon it’s really only a matter of when rather than an issue of if a 4K Switch will arrive, but when exactly is anyone’s guess.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Can Charge Faster Than The iPhone 12 Pro Max

When Apple stopped bundling chargers with the iPhone 12, they announced that if customers wanted a faster charging speed, they’d need to shell out $25 for the 20W charger. This would allow iPhone 12 owners to hit faster charging speeds compared to older charging bricks from earlier iPhone models.

However, it turns out that the iPhone 13 Pro Max can actually hit faster charging speeds than its predecessor, even though Apple did not mention this during the presentation. In a video uploaded to ChargerLab, it shows the iPhone 13 Pro Max being tested with various chargers of varying power outputs.

Based on the numbers we’re seeing, it appears that the iPhone 13 Pro Max when paired with at least 30W charger can reach charging speeds up to 27W. However, the video shows that the speed does fluctuate so it’s not at a constant 27W, but does seem to be faster than the iPhone 12 Pro Max which caps at around 22W even when paired with a 30W charger.

The video also shows the phone paired with even more powerful chargers, up to 100W, but it seems that it doesn’t really make that much of a difference beyond 30W. So if fast charging is a priority for you, then maybe investing in a good quality 30W or better charger might be a good idea.

Siri Seems To Have Mysteriously Lost Some Of Its Accessibility Commands

One of the things Apple prides itself on would be accessibility, where the company usually touts how their products have various accessibility features that makes it easier for people with disabilities to use them. However, for some odd reason, Apple seems to have removed some of them from Siri, its digital assistant.

According to various reports from users and posts made on the AppleVis forums (a forum for Apple users who are blind or have low vision), the release of iOS 15 has removed some accessibility commands from Siri.

This includes being able to ask Siri if the user has voicemails, to play voicemail messages, check call history, check recent calls, ask who called me, send an email, and send an email to a specific contact. It’s odd that Apple would remove these commands since they seem kind of useful and important.

It is unclear if Apple has simply renamed the commands, which would be rather inconvenient for users, or if it’s a bug. Chances are it’s the latter as a user from the forum claims to have spoken to Apple support and was told Apple is aware of the issue, so hopefully it will be addressed soon as we imagine that for some users, these are very key commands that they need in their daily usage.

iPad mini 6 iFixit teardown explains jelly scrolling behavior

The iPad mini 6 introduced a lot of big changes to the small tablet family, the first one in a very long time. Not only has it adopted the design language now common across all iPhones and iPads, but it also finally embraced the USB-C connector. Although it seems minor in comparison, the larger display of the 6th gen iPad … Continue reading

Galaxy S21 FE references are vanishing from Samsung’s websites

When Apple announced that it would no longer launch the AirPower wireless charging mat, it probably wished it could rewrite history and stop the product from even being mentioned in the first place. Samsung would have probably been in the same boat had it announced the Galaxy S21 FE, only to realize too late that it wouldn’t be able to … Continue reading

Motorcyclist’s Apple Watch Calls For Help After Hit-And-Run Accident

It seems that the Apple Watch has more than one way of saving lives. We’ve heard stories of how the smartwatch’s built-in heart rate monitor and ECG monitor have alerted its wearer to problems , thus allowing them to seek out medical help before it’s too late, but that’s not all the Apple Watch can do.

It seems that recently over in Singapore, a motorcyclist’s Apple Watch managed to help after he got into a hit-and-run accident. The motorcyclist collided with a van and fell off his bike where he lost consciousness. However, it seems that while he lost consciousness, his Apple Watch did not.

It detected that he had experienced a hard fall and since he did not respond to the prompt, it  then sent a message to the motorcyclist’s emergency contacts, while also calling for an ambulance.

According to the motorcyclist’s family, they said that they were very thankful for the watch’s feature because at the time of the accident, the streets were relatively empty and there might have been a chance no one would have noticed the accident until it might have been too late. This is actually not the first time we’re hearing about the fall detection feature saving a life, and we expect that we’ll be hearing more of these stories in the future.

AirTag Bug Enables ‘Good Samaritan’ Attack

When Apple launched the AirTag, they also added support for the Find My network which means that users can use the network to find items that they’ve attached the AirTag to. Unfortunately, it appears that there might be a bug/vulnerability with the system that could lead to a “Good Samaritan” attack.

This is according to a report from KrebsOnSecurity where it was discovered that when the AirTag’s Lost Mode is enabled, Apple doesn’t actually check to see if computer code has been entered into the phone number field. What this means is that if someone found a malicious AirTag and scans it with their phone, it could create a popup which could then direct users to a phony iCloud login page.

Users who think that they’re doing a good deed might then enter their Apple ID credentials to try and help, but could end up having their login information stolen instead. Speaking to KrebsOnSecurity, Bobby Rauch, who discovered the vulnerability, said that he had informed Apple about it.

While Apple did acknowledge the issue and stated that it would be fixed in an upcoming update, they did not respond when asked about a timeline for fixing it, if he would be credited, or if his discovery would qualify him for Apple’s bug bounty program. This seeming lack of communication is one that other developers and researchers have been frustrated with.

Just recently a researcher was forced to go public with his findings after submitting them to Apple but got no response from them. Following the unwanted attention, Apple later acknowledged it and said that they were still looking into it.

iOS 15 Messages Bug Deletes Saved Photos

If you use Apple’s Messages as your primary messenger, then you might want to take note of a bug that has appeared in iOS 15. This is because this bug seems to cause photos saved from Messages to be deleted, although the good news is that depending on your usage habits, it might not affect you.

According to the report from MacRumors, basically how this bug occurs is when you save a photo from a Messages conversation to your Camera Roll. You must then check to see if the photo has been saved. After which, you will need to delete the Messages conversation that the photo came from.

At this point, the photo should still be in your Camera Roll, but once you perform an iCloud Backup, the photo will then disappear. Given that iCloud Backup is something that most iOS users have enabled, this could affect users who tend to delete message conversations every so often.

We’re not sure if this only applies to photos saved after iOS 15 was installed or if it affects all photos that were part of the conversation.

However, like we said, unless you’re the type that regularly deletes message threads, there is a chance that this is a bug that might not affect you. Either way, it’s something that Apple definitely needs to address, but reports are suggesting the issue is still present in the latest iOS 15.1 beta, so it might be a while before we see a fix for it.
