E-Waste From a Single Bitcoin Transaction Is Like Throwing Away Two iPhone 12 Minis
Posted in: Today's ChiliThere’s no doubt that cryptocurrency in its current form is bad news for our planet. But while much attention has been paid to crypto’s carbon footprint and electrical use, its impact on e-waste hasn’t received similar scrutiny, until now.

Elon Musk, the Man Who Almost Never Meets Deadlines, Says Starlink Will Come Out of Beta Phase Next Month
Posted in: Today's ChiliSpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Friday announced that Starlink, the company’s satellite internet service, will come out of its public beta phase in October. While that would be exciting news, we’re taking it with a grain a salt. It is Musk, after all, the man that has become infamous for missing deadlines over the years.
Are you thinking about upgrading to Apple’s brand new iPhone 13 handset? It is pretty expensive, we’ll have to admit, but that’s what trade-ins are for, right? Of course, how much you get depends on the place you’re trading in to, the condition of your phone, and etc., but it looks like Verizon might now be worthy of your consideration.
This is because the carrier has announced that they will now be increasing the subsidies they’re offering for the iPhone 13. The carrier had previously offered a trade-in value of up to $700, which is actually rather low compared to other carriers, but Verizon has since increased that amount to $1,000.
The carrier notes that the biggest subsidies will be given to those trading in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models, obviously, so if you’re bringing in an older device, you probably won’t get as much. Also, presumably the condition of the phone matters as well, so if it’s broken and all beat up, don’t be surprised if your subsidy is less.
Verizon will be just one of several different platforms that you can trade-in an old iPhone for a new one, but with its subsidies being bumped up to $1,000, like we said, it might actually now be worth considering going through them.

Spot has probably got to be Boston Dynamics’ most famous and well-known creation to date, and in recent times we’ve started to hear more about it being used in real-life. For example, in 2020 at the start of the pandemic, the Singapore government actually deployed the use of Spot to remind people to socially distance themselves from each other.
Now it looks like Spot has found itself a new job, this time as a factory safety inspector at Hyundai. This is part of a pilot program that Hyundai will be using at the Kia plant in South Korea where it will patrol the factory to look out for things like fire hazards, temperatures, and even be used at night for security patrol.
The version of Spot used by Hyundai has also been slightly modified so that it will come with more sensors and tools, like a thermal camera, LiDAR, more computing resources, and also the ability for factory workers to take control of the robot and use it to monitor specific parts of the factory.
That being said, this is currently a pilot program where Hyundai will be assessing the robot’s effectiveness before deploying it at their other factories. While it is pretty cool, we can’t help but get the vibes of a dystopian future where the robots takeover and force humans to build more robots for them.

The way Apple works is that they’ll introduce a new feature for its higher-end iPhones first, and then the following year, that feature is expected to be available across the board. This is kind of like how Apple approached OIS for the iPhone cameras and also the use of OLED displays for the iPhones as well.
However, it seems that might not happen with the ProMotion 120Hz display. According to a report from South Korean publication TheElec, not all of the 2022 iPhone models are expected to come with a 120Hz display that Apple introduced to its iPhone 13 Pro models this year.
This is because the publication claims that out of the four iPhone 14 models rumored for 2022, Apple will apparently still be using an LTPS OLED display for one of them, not LTPO which is needed for the higher fresh rates. Presumably the use of the LTPS display might be for the lowest end model, but it might be too early to tell.
It’s interesting that the report claims that there will be four models. This is because it has been rumored that this year will be the last year we’ll be seeing the “mini” iPhone, so claims of four models would either suggest the rumors are wrong, or Apple could have another model they plan to replace the mini with.
