Pērkons is Erica Synths' thunderous new drum machine

Erica Synths is no stranger to large, niche instruments. Just look at the SYNTRX — it’s one of the most amazing and also impractical synths I’ve ever played. And the company’s latest, Pērkons, continues that tradition. It chassis actually appears to be very similar to the SYNTRX, a metal rectangle with slightly rounded edges at the top and bottom, and wooden cheeks on the side. Of course the interface is completely different, which isn’t surprising since Pērkons isn’t an homage to the Synthi AKS, but a drum machine.

The core of Pērkons is a hybrid of four digital sound sources with an analog multimode filter and overdrive. The goal is big, thunderous percussion (hence being named after a Baltic god of thunder) — if you’re going in thinking about a simple kick, snare, hat combo, you might be disappointed. Unfortunately Erica Synths is being really cagey about the drum machine right now, so I don’t have a ton of impressions to share. Though, the company says that it “tears down the borders between drum machine, synthesizer and drone instrument.”

What I can say though is that is has a rather interesting collection of features. There are only four voices / sequencer tracks, but each voice has extensive controls and can be saved as “kits” for easy recall later. You can also record automation to a pattern (there’s room for 64 on the Pērkons but you can expand the storage with an SD card), or modulate parameters with the LFO.

Patterns can be up to 64 steps, with chance and ratchet controls for each step and there are four separate shuffle algorithms to keep things interesting. Plus an analog delay for getting your dub on and an optical compressor for punch.

Pērkons is obviously meant for the serious musician, though, not the casual knob twiddler. The size and €1,650 price make that pretty clear. But it’s even more obvious when you look around back. There are separate outputs for each of the four voices, plus send and returns for each voice, so you could (if you wanted) add a distortion pedal to your bass drum and some flanger to the hats and… ring modulation to the snare, why not?

There’s no firm release date yet, but Erica Synths says Pērkons will be out by the end of the year.

It Seems Apple Didn’t Even Bother Giving The Apple Watch Series 7 A New Processor

Yesterday at Apple’s event, the company announced the Apple Watch Series 7. This is the latest in the Apple Watch lineup, but oddly enough the announcement felt kind of short. The company seemed to focus mostly on the slight changes to the design and display of the watch and reiterated some health features, and that was it.

They did not bother to expound on the improvements in performance, but there’s a reason why. According to a tweet by developer Steve Troughton-Smith, the reason is because the Apple Watch Series 7 apparently uses the same chipset as the one in the Series 6. We’re not even talking about a modified version here, we’re talking about exactly the same thing.

What this means is that all Apple did was to change the chassis, give it a larger display, and called it a day. This is a bit odd but according to Guilherme Rambo, he speculates that something might have happened at the very last minute that forced Apple to improvise to come up with a new model.

You might recall that leading up to the official announcement there were rumors that the Series 7 could sport a brand new design. This was obviously not the case as you can see, and Rambo believes that the rumors were true, but something drastic might have happened that resulted in Apple putting those plans on the backburner.

There were rumors about a possible production problem, but given that Apple could not have possibly pulled a new design out of thin air this quickly, we’re not quite sure what happened. This also means that if you were thinking of upgrading, it’s looking like the Series 8 could be much more worth waiting for.

Nintendo Switch Finally Adds Support For Bluetooth Headphones

Connecting Bluetooth headphones to your phone, tablet, laptop, or consoles is pretty much the standard these days. However, when Nintendo launched the Switch, there was no support for Bluetooth headphones. Instead, Nintendo tried to be clever about it by using an app and some convoluted method to facilitate in-game voice chat.

The company defended its decision back then by claiming that this is because we already have our phones on us all the time, so it makes sense to use it as the medium for communication. It looks like the company could be partially walking back on that because in the latest firmware update, Nintendo has finally allowed Switch owners to pair Bluetooth headphones with the console.

However, before you get too happy, Nintendo’s support page notes that this only allows users to pair Bluetooth headphones with the console. They make a point of mentioning that Bluetooth microphones will not be supported, meaning that even if your Bluetooth headset has a built-in mic, you won’t be able to use it and you’ll still need to go through the app.

We don’t get why the company doesn’t just allow for full Bluetooth microphone and headphone support, but we suppose it’s better than nothing. The firmware update will bump the console’s version to 13.0.0, so make sure you have this version before trying out the Bluetooth feature.

ProRes In 4K Will Be Limited To iPhone 13 Models With At Least 256GB Of Storage

Yesterday Apple announced their brand new iPhone models. One of the new features of the iPhone 13 is called ProRes which was initially launched for Final Cut Pro users that basically helped to compress video files in a high-quality manner, versus more traditional compression that usually results in degraded footage.

If you’re a budding videographer who’s hoping to maybe use the new iPhone 13 as their primary video capture device, then here’s something Apple did not announce at the event. According to the specs page, it turns out that if you want to use ProRes in 4K at 30 FPS, then you will need to own an iPhone 13 Pro with at least 256GB of storage or more.

This doesn’t mean that lower storage models won’t support ProRes, but if you own the 128GB model, then ProRes for you will be limited to 1080p resolution at 30 FPS, which is still fine and workable for some, but obviously it’s not a bad thing to be able to shoot in a higher resolution as it retains more details even when you crop.

ProRes won’t be launching alongside the new iPhones. Instead, it will come as part of an update later in the year, so you should probably decide which model you want right now.
