Xiaomi Debuts A Pair Of Conceptual Smart Glasses

Xiaomi makes and dabbles in many things, and now it appears that the company’s next possible product could be a pair of smart glasses. We said “possible” because the company has made it clear that these are currently more conceptual rather than real, but it does give us a glimpse into what the company could have planned for the future.

In terms of design, Xiaomi hasn’t gone all out with it, and that’s a good thing because it looks rather normal which will help it blend into regular clothing and fashion. It will have abilities you might expect from a pair of smart glasses, like being able to display notifications in the lens, making calls, using it for navigation, taking photos, and even translating text in real-time.

According to Xiaomi, these glasses will be using micro LEDs for backlighting, with the display chip itself measuring 2.4mm x 2.02mm, making it the size of a grain of rice, meaning that it is very light. Xiaomi also claims that the glasses will use optical waveguide technology that can refract light at 180 degrees to ensure accuracy when beaming light to our eyes.

It sounds pretty cool, but at the moment it also sounds more like a wishlist of things Xiaomi would want to put into a pair of smart glasses. We have no idea when the company might actually make it a reality, but this announcement does suggest that they are thinking about it.

Apple’s privacy stance, even in the face of government pressure, may have endeared it to many activists and people of interest, but that also means its devices have become even bigger hacking targets. Several high-profile organizations and companies have made it their business to circumvent Apple’s strong protections and pilfer data from compromised iPhones and Macs, often owned by people … Continue reading

Google Messages nudge takes a page out of Gmail’s book

The amount of information that we’re bombarded with every day is almost a sure-fire way for important things to slip through the cracks. While many will rely on their brainpower to remember things, it has been proven that the majority of people tend to forget too easily. Unsurprisingly, there is no shortage of technological solutions that try to give as … Continue reading

WhatsApp Will Add Transcription For Voice Messages

One of the features of WhatsApp is the ability to send voice recorded messages. This is handy if you’re busy to type out a message, or if the message is so long that it might simply be easier to just speak it out. However, the person who receives your message is now in a tough spot.

This is because they will have to play the message out loud, which might not be convenient especially in a public setting, or save it for later, which might not be the best if it’s urgent. However, the good news is that WhatsApp is looking to give users more options, according to a report from WABetaInfo.

The report suggests that WhatsApp is working on a transcription feature for voice messages. This means that instead of audio-only playback, users will have the option of transcribing the message to text instead. We’re not sure how accurate this transcription feature will be, but it could come in handy.

Other apps like WeChat already offer similar transcription features, so this isn’t exactly a new thing. WhatsApp has since shared a statement with 9to5Mac about the feature and regarding potential privacy concerns.

According to the statement, “We’re in the very early stages of designing and prototyping voice message transcription. We’re a long way from being able to offer this feature but if we do roll it out, it will be protected by end-to-end encryption.”

M1X Macs Expected To Arrive In The Next Several Weeks

Come tomorrow, Apple will be officially announcing their brand new iPhones and Apple Watch and possibly the AirPods 3. However, the rumor mill has also claimed that Apple is working on new M1X powered Mac computers, so for those more keen on a new computer than a phone, when can we expect it?

According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, it might not be too far off. Gurman claims that the launch of the new M1X Mac computers are expected in the next several weeks. To be more specific, he says that they will “hit the shelves” in the next few weeks, meaning that Apple will probably have an announcement before that.

Apple typically likes to separate their events so it seems unlikely that the September 14 event will play host to all of the company’s fall products, so there is a chance that Apple will be hosting a separate event after that will focus on the new Macs and possibly even the iPads.

Apple has been rumored to be working on redesigned M1X MacBook Pros that will come in a new 14-inch option and also a 16-inch option. There have also been rumors that a higher-end Mac mini could be in development, but we’re not sure if it will make the cut this year or if it might be reserved for a later announcement.

Nintendo Switch Base Model Gets A Price Cut In Europe

Back in July, Nintendo launched a new Switch model with an OLED display. It was priced at $350, making it $50 more expensive than the regular Nintendo Switch. However, it seems that over in Europe, Nintendo has slashed the price of the base model in both the UK and various parts of the region.

So what are the new prices we can expect? Over in the UK, we’re talking about a drop from £279.99 down to £259.99, while in Europe, its price has gone down from €329.99 to €300.99. Unfortunately, it is unclear if these price cuts will also be making its way to the US, where the console, as far as we know, is still priced the same.

We wouldn’t be surprised if its price was eventually reduced but for now there is no official word on that matter. Also, reducing the price makes sense. By making the gap between the new and old model bigger, it might make the base model more appealing to gamers on a budget, which in turn will help drive more hardware sales and in turn software sales as well, which is probably where the company makes most of its money from.

In any case, the new Switch OLED model will be going on sale on the 8th of October, so maybe the price cuts for the US market might take place around then.

Xiaomi Smart Glasses revives dreams and nightmares

Although Google failed spectacularly to turn it into a commercial success, the idea of hi-tech smart glasses never really faded into the background. With consistent rumors of Apple’s own mixed-reality ambitions as well as smaller companies making functional prototypes, smart glasses continue to be both a technological dream and a privacy disaster waiting to happen. Facebook’s collaboration with Ray-ban might … Continue reading
