Google Patent Shows Off A Futuristic-Looking Tablet

Google is no stranger when it comes to tablets. The company has created tablets in the past that were part of its Nexus lineup, and they also followed up with devices like the Pixel C and Pixel Slate. However, we haven’t really heard anything from the company since then with regards to newer tablets.

That being said, the folks over at LetsGoDigital have since stumbled across a patent filed by Google back in 2019 that was recently published by the Japan Patent Office in June 2021. It was for a tablet that featured an edge-to-edge display along with a huge rectangular section on the back of it.

What’s odd about this patent is that it doesn’t seem to have any cutouts for the front or rear-facing cameras, but designer Giuseppe Spinelli decided to create some mockups on how it could look like, as you can see in the render above. It is a rather futuristic-looking design, and oddly enough rather Pixel-looking as well.

It is unclear if this patent was filed simply to protect Google’s design and interest, or if it could be a sign of things to come. However, as it was filed in 2019 and we haven’t heard anything since, it’s hard to say what will happen, so maybe don’t get your hopes up just yet at seeing a new Google tablet.

A New Nokia Tablet Will Be Announced October 6

It has been a while since we last saw a Nokia tablet, but we can’t say we’re surprised. As far as tablets are concerned, Apple’s iPad is too dominant and we imagine that other manufacturers would probably want to focus on other devices instead. That being said, it seems that Nokia could be trying their hand at a tablet again.

This is according to a tweet by the Nokia Mobile Twitter account which teased that on the 6th of October, a new Nokia tablet will be announced. Almost nothing is known about this device at the moment, although the tweet does state that it will be “everything you’d expect” from a Nokia phone, except in tablet form.

HMD Global has been pushing out Nokia phones every now and then, but for the most part it has been budget devices and not high-end flagships, so based on this tweet, we can only assume that maybe the company could have some kind of low or mid-ranged tablet that would be cheap enough to appeal to the masses.

Also, as the tweet does not mention it, we’re not sure if this is going to be an Android device or if maybe Nokia could be planning a Windows tablet. Either way, we should have more details on the 6th of October so check back with us then for more updates.

Fairphone 4 will have a modern feature you won’t like

The Fairphone remains the only modular and completely repairable phone in the market that anyone can buy. These phones are also quite outdated compared to their contemporaries, but their value lies beyond their technical specifications anyway. The Fairphone 4, however, seems to be designed to actually catch up with some of the characteristics of modern smartphones, but it might have … Continue reading

Apple Mysteriously Raises The Price Of Its Beats Flex Earphones

Last year, Apple announced a new pair of earphones to its Beats family of audio products in the form of the Beats Flex. Priced at $49, it was a more affordable wireless alternative to devices like the AirPods, and it even featured the use of the W1 chipset that made pairing it with Apple devices a piece of cake.

With its features and price point, it certainly made it a very compelling purchase, but now for some mysterious reason, Apple has raised the price of the earphones by $20 where it will now cost $69 to purchase it. This is according to Brazilian publication MacMagazine who discovered the price hike on the Apple Store.

This price adjustment seems to have applied to not just the US store, but other international Apple Stores as well, like Canada where it’s now CAD$89.95 versus CAD69.95 from before, and Brazil where it used to cost R$579 but now costs R$899.

It is unclear why Apple has increased the price. Typically companies keep the price the product was launched at until the next generation where they might then increase/decrease the price, so this is kind of an odd move for Apple. In any case, at $69 it suddenly feels a bit less value for money, and at that price we imagine that you could probably find better alternatives.

Apple Says They’re Still Investigating Zero-Day Exploits Publicized By Researcher

Last week, a security researcher went public with his findings on several zero-day exploits that were found in iOS 15. The researcher claims that he tried to reach out to Apple to inform them about it, but never heard back and iOS 15 was released even though he had warned them about these vulnerabilities before then.

It looks like it took Apple getting a bit of unwanted negative media attention where the company finally responded. In an email sent to Denis Tokarev, the researcher in question, Apple apologized for the delay of getting back to him and stated that they are still investigating the issues he brought to their attention.

According to the email, “We saw your blog post regarding this issue and your other reports. We apologize for the delay in responding to you. We want to let you know that we are still investigating these issues and how we can address them to protect customers. Thank you again for taking the time to report these issues to us, we appreciate your assistance. Please let us know if you have any questions.”

Some researchers feel that Apple’s response is not good enough, especially since the company’s bug bounty program is more than five years old.

Speaking to Motherboard, Katie Moussouris, a cybersecurity expert who used to work at Microsoft said, “You would think that their bug bounty program is the healthiest of all the bug bounty programs since they’re offering a million dollars as their top prize. But it’s absolutely not the case.”

Instagram Hits The Pause Button On Development Of ‘Instagram Kids’

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Facebook was working on an Instagram Kids. This would basically create a version of Instagram whose contents would be more kids-friendly, kind of like what Google did with YouTube Kids. However, it seems that Facebook’s plans have since been put on hold.

According to a post by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, “We firmly believe that it’s better for parents to have the option to give their children access to a version of Instagram that is designed for them — where parents can supervise and control their experience — than relying on an app’s ability to verify the age of kids who are too young to have an ID.”

He adds, “While we stand by the need to develop this experience, we’ve decided to pause this project. This will give us time to work with parents, experts, policymakers and regulators, to listen to their concerns, and to demonstrate the value and importance of this project for younger teens online today.”

The post says that critics have pointed out that a dedicated platform for kids is a bad idea, but Mosseri counters this by saying that kids are already online, and that acknowledging it and developing a platform specifically for it would be better. Mosseri also notes that the version that they had intended to build would not be the same as the current Instagram, and it won’t have ads and will only display age-appropriate content.

That being said, we imagine that there are complexities to building such a platform. Even Google didn’t necessarily get it right with YouTube Kids. In any case, it looks like plans for the platform have since been paused but when it is expected to resume (if at all) is anyone’s guess.
