Nintendo Announces New ‘Expansion Pack’ Tier For Switch Online

The Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required if you want to be able to play games online with your friends or other people. However, to make the subscription more enticing, Nintendo has also included a library of classic games that gamers can play for free in addition to what they already own.

Now it looks like that library will be expanding as Nintendo has since announced the “Expansion Pack” tier for Switch Online. This will be a new subscription tier for the online service. Pricing is currently unknown but Nintendo said that more details will be revealed later.

However, one of the features of this tier is that it will give gamers access to a library of Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis titles. This will be in addition to what Switch Online subscribers can already access, so presumably this Expansion Pack tier will be priced higher than a regular Switch Online subscription, but there might be a reason to choose it over the regular version.

This is because it will grant players access to games like Mario Kart 64, which will now be playable online with up to four players. This new Expansion Pack tier will be going live in October, so we should have more details on pricing then.

Nintendo Unveils New N64, Sega Genesis Controllers For The Switch

About a week ago, a sighting at the FCC revealed that Nintendo could be working on new controllers for the Switch console. It looks like we finally know what they are as the company has since announced two brand new gamepads for the Switch in the form of the Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis.

Given how fiercely Nintendo and Sega competed back in the day, it’s actually a little heartwarming to see that both have kind of made up, although Sega’s exit from the hardware business probably had a role to play in this as well. Both controllers are wireless in nature and are priced at $50 each.

However, it should be noted that these controllers can’t be purchased by anyone. Similar to when Nintendo launched the NES controllers for the Switch back in 2018, these new controllers can only be purchased by those who are subscribed to Switch Online, although we imagine that there are probably some enterprising gamers who might sell off their unit, most likely at a marked up price.

There is no word on the release of the controllers, but with Nintendo launching their Expansion Pack Switch Online tier in October that will unlock N64 and Genesis games, we assume these gamepads will probably launch around that time as well, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.

EU Reveals Plan For Mandating USB-C As The Charging Standard For All Mobile Devices

Right now when it comes to charging standards, a good majority of devices rely on standards like micro USB or USB-C, the latter of which is newer and is becoming more ubiquitous. Apple, however, is still holding out with Lightning for its iPhones. It’s strange given that they adopted USB-C for their MacBooks and iPads, so we’re not sure why they aren’t doing the same for iPhone.

However, it seems that soon they may not have a choice because the EU has since laid out their plans that will essentially mandate that devices sold in the bloc will need to use USB-C as its charging standard. This will apply to all battery-operated gadgets which include “all smartphones, tablets, cameras, headphones, portable speakers and handheld videogame consoles.”

The EU is also keen on adopting what Apple did with the iPhone 12, which was to ditch the charger included in the box. While many criticized Apple’s decision, quite a number of manufacturers have since done something similar, and this decision by the EU more or less helps vindicate Apple’s decision.

That being said, Apple isn’t too thrilled with the idea of being forced to adopt USB-C. A statement made to iMore reads, “We create products that enhance people’s lives, making everyday tasks easier and more efficient, including how you charge and transfer data on your device. We remain concerned that strict regulation mandating just one type of connector stifles innovation rather than encouraging it, which in turn will harm consumers in Europe and around the world.”

They also say that they are working with the EU Commission to understand the proposals, but note that the 24-month transition period will be a “major concern” in the industry.

They Said Foundation Couldn't Be Filmed, and It Still Hasn't Been

In 1966, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy was voted the best science fiction series of all time at the Hugo Awards. Other series have certainly surpassed it since then, although it’s still considered the work that codified the genre. Despite its fame, because the series is an epic on a galactic level told over the…

Potential Resolution For 14-inch And 16-inch MacBook Pros Revealed

In the coming weeks we expect that Apple will probably launch their new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. The 14-inch will represent a new display size option, which we wonder if it could replace the 13-inch model, while the 16-inch will be an updated version of the laptop that first launched towards the end of 2019.

That being said, more details such as the possible display resolution for these laptops have been revealed, thanks to references in the latest macOS Monterey beta discovered by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

According to the references, there are two new display options listed – 3456×2234 Retina and 3024×1964 Retina. Since these resolutions do not correspond with any of Apple’s current products, it has been speculated that they could be the resolution for the upcoming MacBook Pros.

We can only assume that the first resolution spotted is probably for the 16-inch model, which right now has a 3072×1920 display, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro has a 2560×1600 display. This would suggest that both models could get quite a bit of a resolution upgrade, not that we’re complaining.

Of course, there is no guarantee that these are referencing the new MacBook Pros, but hopefully Apple will have something official to share soon.

Urgent iOS 12.5.5 Patch Issued To Close Zero-Day Exploit On Older iPhones

It has been a few years since iOS 12 was released, but it looks like Apple has since released a new update in the form of iOS 12.5.5. According to Apple, this update is expected to patch several exploits and vulnerabilities that have been discovered and that are targeting devices that run on older builds of iOS 12.

It should be noted that this update is aimed at users who have devices that cannot be updated to iOS 13 due to them being too old and incompatible. Presumably these issues do not affect newer devices like those running iOS 13 or later, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more details should any surface.

According to Apple, this will apply to devices like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and iPod touch (6th generation), so if you own any of these devices then you’ll want to update to iOS 12.5.5 ASAP to prevent any potential attackers from targeting your devices with this exploit.

The update should already be live for all devices so head on over to your phone’s Settings and check for the update. While Apple isn’t disclosing the exact nature of the exploit and vulnerabilities, they do have additional details about the update, sp head on over to Apple’s website if you’d like to know more.

Apple Watch Series 7 Comes With A Mysterious 60.5GHz Wireless Data Transfer Module

In a recent report from MacRumors, they discovered an FCC filing for the upcoming Apple Watch Series 7 that revealed that the wearable comes equipped with a new module that will enable 60.5GHz wireless data transfer. However, there is a good chance that this could only be meant for internal use only.

The filing indicates that this feature is activated when placed on a proprietary magnetic dock with its own 60.5GHz module. It has since been suggested that maybe it could be used by Apple Stores to help restore a watch wirelessly, but it has also since fueled some speculation about what it could mean for future Apple products.

For example, one of the rumors we’ve been hearing is how Apple might skip USB-C and just create a portless iPhone. It was then suggested that Apple was exploring ways to allow such an iPhone to wireless recover data, and so the idea of using a 60.5GHz module might not be that much of a stretch.

There have also been some comments that speculate that it could somehow be linked to Apple’s upcoming rumored AR/VR glasses, where it might facilitate some kind of connection between the headset and the watch. Either way, this is purely speculation so don’t get your hopes up just yet. For all we know, it could really be nothing more than just a way to allow the Apple Store to restore watches without the need for wires.
