Facebook expands fight against COVID-19 vaccine misinformation to include kids

Vaccine misinformation has been pervasive issue on Facebook for years, and it wasn’t until earlier this year that the website finally introduced policies that would address the problem. Now, the social network has expanded those policies and its COVID-19 vaccination efforts to include kids shortly after the FDA authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages five to eleven.

In the coming weeks, it will send in-feed English and Spanish reminders to users in the US that the COVID-19 vaccine is now available for kids. Those reminders will also include a link that’ll help users find the nearest vaccination site. Perhaps, more importantly, it will expand its anti-vaccine misinformation policies to remove claims that COVID-19 vaccines for kids do not exist and that the vaccine for children is untested. It will also remove any claim that COVID-19 vaccines can kill or seriously harm kids, that they’re not effective for children at all and that anything other than a COVID-19 vaccine can inoculate children against the virus.

Facebook says its fight against vaccine misinformation is part of an ongoing effort in partnership with the CDC, WHO and other health authorities. It promises to keep on updating its policies and ban any new claim about the COVID-19 vaccine for children that will emerge in the future. The website, which now operates under its parent company Meta, says it has removed more than 20 million pieces of content from Facebook and Instagram since the beginning of the pandemic. As of August 2021, it has also banned 3,000 accounts, groups and pages for repeatedly breaking its health misinformation policies.

Apple’s Suppliers Reportedly Working On Blood Glucose Sensors For The Apple Watch

It has long been a dream of many diabetics to have a way to measure their blood glucose levels throughout the day without having to draw blood. While there have been some bloodless ways of doing so, it’s not particularly mainstream, which is why many have hoped that companies like Apple could create a method of measuring blood glucose levels using the Apple Watch.

Now according to a report from DigiTimes (paywall), they are claiming that Apple and some of their suppliers have apparently been trying to develop the tech for it. The report claims that these companies have been working on sensors to measure the user’s blood glucose levels without the need to draw blood by using short-wavelength infrared sensors.

It was initially rumored that an Apple Watch with the ability to noninvasively measure blood glucose levels could actually launch this year, but that rumor obviously did not pan out. Some claim that an Apple Watch with that ability is still years away from being made a reality, so maybe we shouldn’t get our hopes up just yet.

That being said, as with all health features on the Apple Watch, they aren’t necessarily made to replace professional medical equipment, so even if Apple were to release such a watch, you should still consult your doctor if you do have concerns.

Japanese Police Use Targeted YouTube Ads To Warn Would-Be Voyeurs

YouTube, like most other online platforms, has targeted ads. These are ads meant to target specific users based on what they’ve searched for in hopes that it might be relevant enough to get that person to purchase a product or service. For example, if you’ve been searching for financial advice, you might get ads for financial/investment products and tools.

However, over in Kyoto, Japan, the police have taken these targeted ads and have turned them into warnings. According to the local police, it seems that illegal voyeur recordings have been a growing problem and arrests are up 25% from last year. In a bid to deter would-be voyeurs, the police have taken out targeted ads on YouTube to warn that voyeurism is a crime.

So since these are targeted ads, it appears that the police are targeting users who are male and over the age of 18 and who might have search terms like “peeping” and “small camera” in their histories, which might suggest that they are interested in either watching these voyeuristic videos or looking to take part in them.

It is unclear how effective these warnings are, but we imagine that it might be quite a shock for would-be voyeurs to suddenly see an ad warning them against their activities. These ads are expected to run until the middle of November.

Microsoft’s Kinect Finds New Life As A Tool Of Ghost Hunters

When Microsoft first launched the Kinect, it was a tool designed for gaming. However, it was quickly discovered that the Kinect had uses beyond just gaming and over the years, we’ve seen it used for motion tracking, health services, and also as a tool that can help translate sign language.

Now it seems that ghost hunters are using the Kinect as well. This is according to a recent video where H3 Productions teamed up with Linda the Ghost Hunter to explore one of the most haunted places in America. According to Linda, the Kinect was being used because apparently it has the ability to track “skeletal figures that aren’t there”.

About a minute into the video, it does appear that the Kinect manages to capture two ghostly figures, but we can’t say for sure if this was 100% legitimate, a bug in the Kinect system, or just very clever editing. That being said, as some have pointed out in the comments, Linda wouldn’t be the first ghost hunter to use the Kinect.

There have been multiple stories over the years that have revealed that the Kinect is one of the popular choices amongst the ghost hunter community. Whether or not you believe in the supernatural, it’s just kind of fun to hear how people are finding alternate uses for the gadget.
