iFixit's Apple Watch Series 7 teardown shows the same display tech as iPhone 13

iFixit has taken apart the Apple Watch Series 7 and showed that despite having minimal changes on the outside, it does feature some big upgrades underneath. As we mentioned in our review, the main difference between this device and the Series 6 is its slightly bigger display, Now, iFixit’s teardown shows that its display uses touch-integrated OLED panel or “on-cell touch,” which debuted with the iPhone 13

The website says the move is unusual for Apple, since it typically introduces new display tech — such as OLED, always-on and variable refresh rate — on the lower-volume Apple Watch first instead of the other way around. According to the former Apple engineers iFixit worked with for this teardown, this new display may have caused production delays and made the company release the device later than it would’ve liked.

When the tech giant first announced the Series 7 in September, it didn’t have a concrete release date. The former Apple engineers said that usually signals delays, and the most likely culprit was the manufacturing hiccups caused by the Watch’s display. “[S]creens have some of the most complex supply chains and assembly processes in the industry,” the website explained. In addition to using new technology, Apple also made the display bigger and gave it a refractive edge to make the sides look like they’re slightly curved.

iFixit also found that the model’s battery is larger than its predecessors. That doesn’t translate to longer battery life, though, since the device’s larger screen likely uses more power. There are a few other more minor changes compared to previous versions of the Watch. You can see the whole teardown on iFixit’s website, along with more photos of what’s inside the Series 7.

Google’s New Pixel Pass Could Give The Apple One Bundle A Run For Its Money

Apple has its Apple One subscription bundle that basically bundles subscriptions like Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud, and more together at a cheaper price compared to subscribing to all of them individually. Now it looks like Google has their answer to the Apple One, but it comes with additional features that could make it quite an attractive option for would-be Pixel owners.

First off, we should point out that the Pixel Pass will not come cheap. It is priced starting at $45 a month for the Pixel 6 and $55 for the Pixel 6 Pro, but what you’re getting is a subscription to YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, Google One with 200GB of storage, Google Play Pass (which is Google’s answer to Apple Arcade), and also Preferred Care coverage for your Pixel phone.

You will also essentially be getting either the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro in the process, so what you’re doing is buying the phone directly from Google and paying it back on monthly installments, while getting a bunch of other perks in the process. Your phone will also be unlocked so you’re free to use it with whichever carrier you want.

Also, at the end of two years, customers will have the option to upgrade to whichever new Pixel phone is available at that time. It’s admittedly a very interesting offer and if you’re interested, you’ll be able to purchase the Pixel Pass from either the Google Store or through Google Fi.

Google Is Cutting Its Play Store Subscription Fees By Half

google play storeCompanies like Apple and Google charge developers a fee for selling apps, in-app purchases, and subscriptions made through their respective app stores. For a while, developers didn’t really have a choice, but in recent years, more and more developers have started speaking up and complained about the cuts that these companies took from them.

For the most part, this cut was around 30%, but Google has recently announced some changes to the fees they’ll be taking from subscriptions, where the company will essentially be halving it where it will now just be a 15% cut. Google notes that previously they did offer developers a 15% cut, but that’s only if a user were to have a recurring subscription of 12 months.

However, according to Google, “But we’ve heard that customer churn makes it challenging for subscription businesses to benefit from that reduced rate. So, we’re simplifying things to ensure they can. To help support the specific needs of developers offering subscriptions, starting on January 1, 2022, we’re decreasing the service fee for all subscriptions on Google Play from 30% to 15%, starting from day one.”

We imagine that this move isn’t completely altruistic. While it is great for developers who wish to utilize the Play Store, it also helps Google in the eyes of regulators where it might prove that Google is willing to make concessions and could help them avoid further scrutiny and lawsuits, but either way, it’s not a bad change.

MacBook Air Refresh Could Feature Off-White Bezels

Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple’s upcoming MacBook Air could adopt the notched design for its display. This was something that Apple had done with the recently-announced MacBook Pro, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the MacBook Air were to undergo similar treatment in its design as well.

Now according to a tweet by @dylandkt on Twitter, they have revealed some additional changes we might look forward to for the 2022 refresh. According to the tweet, it seems that Apple will be adopting an off-white bezel for the MacBook Air, and they will offer similar color options as the 24-inch iMac.

They also claim that Apple will be bringing MagSafe to the laptop which they did with the new MacBook Pros, and that Apple will also be upgrading the webcam to 1080p, and also feature a 30W power adapter. Also, what’s interesting is that the tweet claims that Apple might not necessarily call this laptop the MacBook Air, and that the company may simply refer to it as the “MacBook”. Also, with it launching in 2022, @dylandkt thinks it will most likely come with the M2 chipset.

The tweet also shares a bit of bad news and that is apparently the starting price will be increased slightly. The current MacBook Airs have an appeal to them because for an Apple product, they aren’t prohibitively expensive, so it remains to be seen how much more this new laptop could cost.
