Missing-link crab discovered in amber has been preserved for 100 million years
Posted in: Today's ChiliResearchers have studied a piece of amber that has a complete and well-preserved tiny crab captured inside. It’s believed that the crab crawled out of the water and onto the land and became trapped in the amber about 100 million years ago. The discovery is the oldest known modern-looking crab in the fossil record. The minuscule crab is only five … Continue reading
So, will Facebook pull the trigger and change its name? Maybe it’s an attempt to dominate the conversation around the, ugh, metaverse, which has been around for years, perhaps to follow Google’s own reorganization around Alphabet or to simply create some distance from all the negative publicity, sentiment and impressions that Facebook is now associated with.
If the change is metaverse related, it could be very important to the company’s unreleased social virtual reality world called Horizon Worlds.
The funniest take I’ve seen, from Time’s Alex Fitzpatrick, is that Facebook is doing it just to meddle with people that write about the company, like how we remind readers that Google is now just a facet of the bigger Alphabet entity, a bullet point that we sometimes have to mention.

Is Apple’s M1 Max really the fastest laptop chip ever?
Apple is making some big promises with its new Macbook Pro chips
This week’s Upscaled show is all about Apple’s promises with its newest chips. The new M1 Pro and M1 Max bump the core count to eight high-performance and two low-power cores and add 16, 24 or 32 GPU cores. With twice the high-performance CPUs and up to four times the GPU cores as the original M1, these chips should be incredibly fast. Could Apple offer a compelling laptop option for gamers?
Netflix CEO says he ‘screwed up’ on Dave Chappelle as employees stage walk out
But Ed Sarandos continues to stand by the Chappelle special.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said he “screwed up” communication with employees following backlash over Dave Chappelle’s The Closer, according to a report from Variety.
He also stood by the show, saying the company heavily values “artistic expression.” His comments come just ahead of a planned walkout today organized by LGBTQ+ staffers, creatives and allies.
As part of the walkout, employees will reportedly have a list of demands for Netflix, and Sarandos has been meeting them to hear their views. He said that while the company is “deeply committed to inclusion,” it’s equally committed to “supporting artistic freedom with the creators who work at Netflix.”
Some Windows 11 users can start testing Android apps
Only a handful of apps will be available at first.
Microsoft has released an Insider Preview beta that enables the Amazon Appstore and support for running Android apps within Windows. Only 50 apps are available as part of the initial test (such as the Kindle app, Lords Mobile and Lego Duplo World), but Microsoft is promising more in the “coming months.”
The aim, as before, is to make Android apps feel like they belong in Windows 11. You can multitask, check notifications and use Windows accessibility features. Mouse and keyboard input is available, but many apps will predictably benefit from a touchscreen.
DJI’s new cinema camera has a built-in gimbal and LiDAR focus system
The LiDAR should offer ‘sharper, faster and more reliable focusing.’
DJI has revealed the Ronin 4D, a new cinema camera system with a built-in 4-axis gimbal, 8K resolution and LiDAR rangefinder that promises “sharper, faster and more reliable focusing.” With a price starting at $7,199, it’s clearly aimed at the professionals, but we can all dream, right?
The Zenmuse X9 camera is exclusively for the Ronin 4D. It’s available either in a 6K model that can handle 6K at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps, and there’s the 8K 75 fps version. It can capture files in RAW, ProRes or H.264, allowing maximum flexibility in production. DJI claims 14 stops of dynamic range, and it should be good in low-light thanks to the dual-native 800/5000 ISO.
‘Cyberpunk 2077′ PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades delayed until 2022
CDPR also postponed its upgraded version of ‘The Witcher 3.’
Despite CD Projekt Red insisting at the beginning of September it was still on track to release the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Cyberpunk 2077 by the end of the year, that’s no longer the case. The developer now plans to ship the console and PC upgrades for the same game in the first quarter of 2022 (i.e. by the end of March).
In its financial report for the first half of 2021, CDPR included a chart suggesting that around a third of its development staff was working on Cyberpunk 2077 support and the current-gen version as of June 30th.

There are many wireless chargers out there in the market today, and with so many different designs and styles, users are spoilt for choice. However, if you’d rather not have something that someone else already has, then Twelve South might have something for you in the form of the PowerPic Mod.
This is a wireless charging stand that comes with a block of acrylic on the back. What makes this wireless charger so unique is that there is a space in between the acrylic block that lets you put a photo or a small piece of art in it. This means that instead of a regular wireless charger, you’ll now have something that’s more unique and personal.
Maybe you could put a photo of your loved ones, your family, a pet, or if you own a business, you could actually put a menu or your company logo behind it so when people come to your business, they can charge their phones at the same time.
That being said, the PowerPic Mod is otherwise a pretty standard wireless charger. It offers 10W of power output so don’t expect fast charging, but if personalization and customization is what you’re after, then head on over to Twelve South’s website where you’ll be able to pick one up for $60.

Composing an email in Gmail is really easy. Just tap the + button, type in the person’s email, subject, content, and send it off. Easy, right? However, if it’s a particularly important email, then you might need to double check things like the email address because sometimes you don’t want to accidentally send the wrong person the wrong email, especially if it’s sensitive.
Google has announced that they will now be making some changes to its Compose window where it will make it easier for users to track who they are sending emails to, and also giving them a bit more control over their emails.
For example, one of the changes that Google is making comes in the form of visual indicators. As you can see in the screenshot above, now whenever you put a person’s email address in the Compose window, it will display an avatar of the person so you can make sure that it is indeed that person you’re sending the email to, especially if you have contacts who share similar names.
Google is also giving users more options to control the contact name that appears in the email. So for example if you saved a staff or colleague’s name by their role in the company, but you want to come across looking more professional, you can actually set a different name so that when the other person receives it, they’ll see a name different from the one you saved.
Google notes that this doesn’t actually change the name of your contact, but rather what the other person sees when they receive the email.
Other changes also include highlighting external recipients, so if you’re sending out an email to multiple people and some of them aren’t in your company, those email addresses will be highlighted in the Compose window to make them easier to see.
According to Google, these changes are expected to begin rolling out to Google Workspace users, G Suite Basic and Business users early November.

So the other day, benchmarks revealed that the M1 Max chipset Apple debuted in the new MacBook Pros was about twice as fast as the original M1. That’s pretty impressive given that the M1 is no slouch, but what about the GPU? What if your work or use of the MacBook Pro leans more towards graphics processing?
The good news is that it looks like Apple’s claims during the presentation wasn’t all marketing hype. This is according to an unconfirmed Geekbench listing which showed that the M1 Max’s GPU is about 3x faster compared to the M1. However, it is unclear which M1 Max configuration this is because the chipset is offered in 24 and 32-core GPU options.
That being said, while these benchmarks are promising, we can’t say for sure how accurate they are. Also, more importantly, how will the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets fare against discrete GPUs from the likes of NVIDIA and AMD?
Apple made some vague claims of testing their new M1 chipsets against high-end laptops, but since no GPU models or configurations or specs were specified, it’s hard to say what kind of numbers we are looking at. We expect that we should have more details in the coming weeks from the reviews, so we’ll have to wait until then for the details.
