Facebook Will Downrank Posts By Users Who Break The Rules

Facebook has been getting a lot of negative attention in recent times for allowing people to post things like misinformation and being accused of not acting fast enough to curb it. Now it seems that in a bid to help fight back against rule breakers on its platform, the company has announced some new steps.

This includes how the platform will start to downrank posts made by these rule breakers so that they will have less visibility when they’re posting in groups. However, the interesting part of this change is that it will apply to whichever group that person is part of, meaning that if that user broke a Facebook rule in another part of the platform, the punishment will apply to all of their activities.

According to Facebook, “This measure will help reduce the ability of members who break our rules from reaching others in their communities, and builds on the existing restrictions placed upon members who violate Community Standards.” There are varying levels of “punishments” depending on how many times the user broke the rules.

For example, having one post removed for violating Facebook’s Community Standards in the previous 90 days constitutes as one level, and having multiple posts removed will result in “more severe” demotions.

It remains to be seen if any of these changes will have a meaningful impact but it’s good to see Facebook is trying.

YouTube Music makes video playback a Premium perk

YouTube is a name that’s mostly associated with on-demand Internet videos, but it has also become Google’s umbrella brand for its multimedia streaming service. The transition from Google Play Music to YouTube Music wasn’t exactly the smoothest, and some features that may have been considered a staple of free tiers were walled behind subscriptions. That, however, is changing for users … Continue reading

Facebook Could Be Looking To Rebrand Itself

Facebook started out as a social networking platform but over the years, the company started to expand its offerings. It acquired companies like WhatsApp and Instagram, and also dove into hardware with devices like the Portal. Now according to a report from The Verge, the company could be considering a rebranding.

According to the publication’s sources, Facebook is apparently planning to announce a new company name next week that will better reflect its focus on building the metaverse. Apparently this is part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s plan to help the company be known for more than just a social media platform.

If this sounds familiar, it is because Facebook isn’t alone in rebranding itself. Several years ago, Google underwent a similar transformation where parent company Alphabet was formed and Google became one of its subsidiaries. Facebook the social media platform won’t be going anywhere, but we imagine that it could undergo a similar transition where a new parent company would be formed and Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus, and more would be under it.

Given how synonymous Facebook has become with privacy related scandals in recent years, we imagine that it might be hard to launch new ventures under the Facebook brand without people raising concerns, so a new parent company could potentially help with that.

Reporter Suggests Apple Is Designing More Functional Products After Jony Ive’s Departure

It’s safe to say that designer Jony Ive’s contributions to Apple over the past decade or so have definitely played a big role in helping put Apple on the map. However, according to Bloomberg reporter Alex Webb, he believes that ever since Ive left Apple, the company has started to create products that are more functional.

According to Webb, he claims that Apple’s more recent products show that the company has started to reemphasize function over form. He points to devices like the Siri Remote for the Apple TV, where the latest model now comes with added buttons for better control. There is also the new MacBook Pros which saw Apple bring back a ton of ports for better functionality.

He also points at the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models which sport flat edges instead of curved, making them more durable compared to its predecessors where the display would be more prone to cracking if they were dropped on their sides.

Webb acknowledges that it is possible that these changes could have happened even if Ive had remained at the company, but he feels like ultimately there has been a change of design philosophy, but what do you think? Do you agree that Apple’s more recent products have started to feel more functional following Ive’s departure?
