Netflix says 142 million households watched Korean series 'Squid Game'

According to Bloomberg, Netflix’s pre-recorded call to shareholders announcing its third-quarter results gives us another glimpse at how successful Squid Game was. Around 142 million households worldwide watched the Korean-language show about debt—ridden individuals playing a deadly game for a cash prize worth tens of millions of dollars. That makes it the most-viewed new show in Netflix history, the publication said.

Squid Game captured the “cultural zeitgeist” and claimed the number 1 spot in the streaming giant’s rankings in 94 countries, including the US, Netflix has revealed. Since there’s a huge demand for all things Squid Game, Netflix has also announced that consumer products based on the show are now on their way to retail.

A few days ago, Bloombergobtained documents detailing the company’s scores for “impact value” and “efficiency.” Netflix has been pretty secretive on the metrics that make a title successful or not, and the documents showed how it measures series’ and movies’ success. Squid Game was a standout, generating $891.1 million in impact value, which is around 41.7 times — that’s its efficiency score — its budget of $21.4 million.

Thanks in part to Squid Game’s massive viewership, Netflix said it posted its best subscriber growth of the year. “As the quarter continued, we saw an acceleration in our growth,” Chief Financial Officer Spencer Neumann said on the call. It welcomed 4.38 million subscribers in the third quarter, mostly from Asia and Europe, and it expects to get 8.5 million more customers in the final quarter of 2021.

M1 Max Benchmarks Show That It’s Twice As Fast As The M1

To make the company’s MacBook Pro laptops feel truly “Pro”, Apple introduced two new chipsets at their Unleashed event. This came in the form of the M1 Pro and the M1 Max, the latter being the most powerful M-series chipset that Apple has released to date, but how much more powerful are we talking about?

According to a recent Geekbench listing, it seems that the M1 Max offers twice the multi-core performance compared to the original M1. The Geekbench results show that the M1 Max managed a whopping score of 11,542, which is said to be about double that of the M1. This is the most powerful chipset Apple has released so far and beats out pretty much all of the company’s Mac computers.

However, there are exceptions and that is the current Mac Pro and iMac models that are powered by Intel’s 16 and 24-core Xeon processors, but it is on par with the 2019 Mac Pro equipped with the 12-core Intel Xeon W-3235. This shouldn’t be surprising as the Mac Pro is supposed to be a high-end machine aimed more towards industry professionals.

It will be interesting to see how the M1 Pro performs compared to the M1 Max, but assuming these benchmarks are accurate, professionals on the go who need the computing power should be able to turn to the new MacBook Pros for work.

The Pixel 6 Will Make It Easy To Handle Call Center Menus

We’ve all made calls to call centers before for help with a service or product. Those call center menus are rather annoying and some of them have menus within menus which makes navigating them a pain. However, that’s something Google is hoping they can solve with the Pixel 6 phones.

The emphasis Google placed on its new Pixel 6 phones and the Tensor chipset is its machine learning capabilities, which is actually pretty cool. One of those features is that it can learn when you’re calling a call center and will show you information like the menu so you can see which options to choose instead of waiting for the recorded message to read them out to you.

It will also be able to provide users with current and projected wait times so you know when it might be a good time to call. For example, call centers might be particularly busy at night after dinner when people have time to sit down and make a call, so having those current and projected waiting times could be a good way for you to plan your calls so you don’t have to wait too long on the line.

This is essentially an expansion of Google’s Hold For Me feature, which uses Google Assistant to stay on the line for you so you can do other things, and will alert you when a call center representative finally answers the phone.

Android 12 Starts Rolling Out To Pixel Devices

Android 12 was in developer preview since earlier this year, but the good news is that it looks like it is finally ready for the masses. Google has announced that they have started to roll out the Android 12 beta, but keep in mind that this is only for Google’s own Pixel devices first.

For those who own non-Pixel handsets, when the update will arrive for your phone and whether your phone is eligible for the update will depend on the manufacturer, so you’ll have no choice but to wait and see what the manufacturer has to say regarding the update’s availability. However, it’s safe to assume that if you bought your phone either this year or last year, there is a good chance you’ll be able to get the update.

Some of the changes users can expect to see from the Android 12 update is to the UI. Google is calling this Material You which offers deeper customization and personalization. This comes in the form of dynamic colors which can change certain elements of your phone’s UI based on the wallpaper you set.

There will also be changes and improvements made to the privacy of Android, new widgets, and also improvements made to the accessibility of Android. It will also now be easier for users to transfer data from one device to another, even if you’re switching from an iPhone to Android.

According to Google, Android 12 will be available for Pixel 3 devices and newer, so you should expect to see an update available in the coming days or weeks.

Android 12 might finally have native support for app cloning

There was a time when it was almost normal to find out that people had two phones in their possession. The need to keep personal and professional lives separate on that level still exists in this age of dual SIM phones, especially since apps don’t always support handling multiple accounts. Different manufacturers have applied different and inconsistent implementations, but it … Continue reading

More Pixel-first Snapchat features are coming

Google often launches Pixel phones with exclusive features unavailable to other Android phones or even to some of its older Pixels.
