Pixel 6 Pro Shipping Times Have Now Slipped To January 2022

Google has officially announced its new flagship phones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Pre-orders of the phone have gone live but it seems that if you weren’t quick when it came to pulling the trigger on the pre-order, you might have to wait quite a bit because according to tweets by customers who pre-ordered the phone, shipping times have now slipped to January 2022.

There are several reasons why this is the case. One possibility is that the new Pixel phones are much more popular than Google had anticipated and demand is exceeding supply. This shouldn’t be too surprising given that the phone is powered by Google’s brand new Tensor chipset and comes with a ton of awesome Pixel-exclusive features.

Another possibility is that the global chip shortage has affected how many units Google is able to produce at the start. This is a problem faced by many manufacturers including the likes of Apple and Samsung, where the latter apparently decided to skip launching the Galaxy Note series for 2021 as a result of this chip shortage.

That being said, some comments have suggested that ordering the phone through Google’s Fi program could see shorter shipping times, so if you have a Fi account or don’t mind signing up for one, that could be an alternative, otherwise be prepared to wait.

Drones Will Be Used To Try And Rescue Dogs Trapped Near Volcano In Spain

So far we’ve seen drones used to do things like surveillance and deliver packages, but it seems that over in Spain, drones are now being considered to be used in a rescue operation to ferry several dogs trapped near a volcano on the island of La Palma over in Spain.

According to the company, Aerocamaras, that operates the drones, they have received permission to try and use their drones to attempt the rescue. How this will be done, at least according to the current plans, is to drop a net on each of the dogs and then fly them out of the danger zone. The drone used is a cargo drone that is said to be capable of carrying up to 23kg per flight.

The company’s CEO Jaime Pereira told Reuters, “It’s the first time an animal is being rescued with a drone. If that’s the last option that the dogs have? Then we’re going after them.” It’s going to be a tricky and risky operation because not only will the drone operators have to try and trap the dogs in the net in the first place, but they’ll have to carry them 450 meters over lava in order to get them to safety.

There is also the issue with time, where they have about eight minutes to complete the mission otherwise there won’t be enough battery to make the round trip safely. Drones have already been used to help bring food and water to the dogs and other animals on the island.

Netflix says Korean show Squid Game was an astronomical success

Netflix released its third-quarter earnings report today, and as you’d imagine, the company had some things to say about its surprise hit Squid Game. The Korean drama about contestants who compete in deadly games at a shot for cash raked in well over 100 million household views in less than a month on the streaming service. Once upon a time, … Continue reading

Pixel 6 Tensor CPU design revolves around Machine Learning

This shouldn’t really come as much of a surprise. Google is arguably one of the kings of machine learning (ML) and AI, technologies that it relies on to make sense of all the data it collects through the Internet. So when it revealed that it was making its own System-on-Chip (SoC) named Tensor, it was expected that the chip would … Continue reading

Squid Game Will Reportedly Earn Netflix $900 Million In Value

Despite being released over a month ago, Netflix’s Squid Game continues to be the talk of the town even today. The Korean TV series has proven itself to be a massive hit and according to leaked data, a report from Bloomberg has suggested that the company is expected to earn as much as $891 million from the series.

But wait, how does Netflix “earn” from its shows? After all, the company charges a fixed monthly subscription and users can watch as many (or as little) shows they want during their subscription. This is what is called “impact value”, which is basically how many new subscribers will sign up for Netflix after being convinced to use the service in order to watch the series.

Given that the series had a budget of about $21.4 million, this has effectively earned Netflix about 40 times the amount they spent producing the show. This is pretty crazy when you think about how many new subscribers the company managed to attract just from one show.

Netflix has declined to comment on the numbers, but a lawyer for the company told Bloomberg that it was “inappropriate” for them to have published the confidential information. It also seems that a Netflix employee was fired after it was discovered that they were the ones who downloaded the internal data and shared it with the public.

Apparently Twitch Had A ‘Do Not Ban’ List For Some Of Its Top Streamers

Not too long ago, a massive treasure trove of Twitch data was leaked online in which it contained data like the site’s source code, streamer payout numbers, and more. It appears that after combing through the leaked data, a report from the Washington Post has revealed that apparently Twitch used to exempt some of its top streamers from some of its rules.

Now this isn’t so much that these streamers can do what they like on their streams and not be banned for violating the rules. It’s not a blanket exemption. Instead, it seems like this is basically a list of streamers that have been flagged so that in the event that complaints are made about them, instead of immediately taking action, the complaints are sent to specific moderators for additional review.

According to a former employee, they told the publication, “The ‘Do not ban’ list was more like a ‘Do not ban this channel for x’ [list]. [It was] basically a way to add a red notification on reports against [a] channel to make the admins working on reports aware that there are some agreements in place or that the channel is allowed to do certain things. Often it was used to allow what we now call IRL streams.”

In a way we can’t say we’re surprised. After all if Twitch were to start banning its top streamers for minor infractions, it might force them to leave the platform and join a competitor. Twitch has since confirmed that this list is real, but they also stated that it is old and is no longer in use. The company now has a Trust and Safety Operations team that handles all complaints in a bid to be more consistent and standardized with regards to moderation for all streamers on its platform.

Instagram Now Lets Users Post From Their Desktop

When Instagram first launched, it was a mobile-only application. However, over the years the company has started to roll out more features to the web where users could browse their feed and send and receive messages through its desktop interface.

The good news is that Instagram has since announced that you can now post photos and videos up to a minute long from your computer. If this sounds familiar, it is because the company had actually started testing out the feature earlier this year, and now it looks like it will be available to all users starting on the 21st of October.

While Instagram is still largely a mobile platform, giving users the option of uploading photos and videos from their computer is very useful. This is because Instagram is used by many creative professionals as a portfolio to showcase their work. Prior to this, users who edit their work on their computers had to use a workaround to upload to Instagram from their desktop, or send the fully edited files from their desktop to their phones which were just unnecessary extra steps.

Now with users being able to upload directly from their computers, users can save themselves a fair bit of time. This feature is expected to be available to all users on the 21st of October, so if this is something you’ve been looking forward to, it should be available in the coming days.
