How To Block Tracking Pixels In Gmail

Unlike messenger apps that have read notifications, email doesn’t work quite the same way, or at least there aren’t any settings that makes it easy for people to track if you’ve read their email.

So what some companies have done is that they embed their emails with a pretty much invisible pixel in a link or an image, so that whenever the email is opened, they will know that you have read their email. Sometimes that information also contains when you’ve opened it and where you’ve opened it.

It feels like an invasion of your privacy and if you’d rather not have companies know what you do with their emails, then here is how you can block it if you’re using Gmail.

Gmail On The Web

  1. Go to Gmail
  2. Click the gear icon at the top right corner of the screen
  3. Click See All Settings
  4. Under the General tab, look for Images
  5. Select “Ask before displaying external images”
  6. Scroll down and click “Save Changes”

What this does is that it disables images from loading in the email, which in turn affects the pixel as well. While your emails might look a bit bland, they will disable the tracker, but you can always manually click the “Display Images” option within emails that you trust.

Gmail For Android

  1. Launch the Gmail app
  2. Tap on the three lines in the upper left corner of the app
  3. Tap on Settings
  4. Scroll down and look for “Images”
  5. Tap on “Ask before displaying external images”

Gmail For iOS

  1. Launch the Gmail app
  2. Tap the three line icon at the upper left corner of the app
  3. Tap the account you want to make the changes to
  4. Tap Images
  5. Tap on “Ask before displaying external images”, it should now show a checkmark next to it

Browser Extensions

If you prefer to maintain your Gmail’s current image settings and not mess with that, then your next best alternative would be to use browser extensions. This includes Ugly Email and PixelBlock, both of which are free to download and use. The main difference is that Ugly Email is available for both Chrome and Firefox, while PixelBlock seems to be exclusive to Chrome for now.

Download and install them like you would a normal browser extension and you’re good to go. Emails with pixel trackers will show an “eye” icon next to the sender’s name to let you know that the tracker has been blocked.

How To Fix ‘This Site Can’t Be Reached’ Error

These days, our internet is more reliable than it was back in the dialup days, where accidentally lifting up the phone from its receiver could disconnect you. This means that for the most part, websites should have no problems loading, but of course, nothing is perfect and you might encounter some errors every now and then.

Some of these error messages might be more obvious, like Error 404 which is basically stating that the page/website does not exist. This could be because you typed in the address wrongly, or that the host has removed the page. Error 403 is also pretty easy to diagnose because it simply means that you do not have access to the page because it is password protected and you do not have permission.

However, some error messages might be a bit more vague.

Have you ever encountered an error message that simply says, “This site can’t be reached”? If you have, you’re not alone and it’s usually quite hard to discern why that might be the cause. Could it be a problem on your end? Could it be an issue with the host server? Here are several ways to potentially fix it.

Use A Different Browser

Try visiting the website on a different browser. If the page loads just fine on another browser, then the issue could be with the previous browser. From there, you can then try to determine what the differences are between the browsers to get a better idea of what you could do to fix it.

Disabling Browser Extensions

Browser extensions are meant to help improve your browsing experience, but sometimes an out-of-date extension or an incompatible extension or a buggy extension can have an impact on how a website loads or is displayed. If you tried the method above and the page loads on a different browser, then try disabling all browser extensions in your previous browser to see if it makes a difference.

Restart Your Internet Connection

Sometimes your modem/router might hang for whatever reason and cause you some internet issues. It might look like you’re still connected but you’re not, so doing a quick restart of your modem/router could refresh the connection and could solve the issue.

Disable Your Firewall Or Antivirus

A computer’s firewall and antivirus software is meant to keep intruders out. For the most part it works just fine, but sometimes, it might get confused and might be overprotective to the point where it can cause websites to not load correctly. Disabling your firewall or antivirus software and retrying the connection could help.

Clear Your Browser Cache

Your browser’s cache is where your browser stores files of websites you’ve visited in the past. The idea is that by storing some files related to the website, it can help it load faster whenever you visit it again. The problem is that sometimes these files can get corrupt, so clearing out your browser’s cache could be a possible fix.

Flushing Your DNS Cache

Similar to your browser cache, the DNS cache is where your computer stores data from websites you visit, except that in this case it mostly stores IP addresses of websites you’ve visited so that it doesn’t have to look up the IP server again when you revisit the website.

To flush your DNS cache, click the Start menu on your computer, search for “Command Prompt” and launch it. In the Command Prompt window, type “ipconfig /flushdns” (minus the quotes) and hit enter. Once that’s done, you should see a message saying your DNS cache has been successfully flushed.

Change Your DNS Servers

By default, your ISP will have automatically assigned you a DNS server to manage your connections. Sometimes there might be an issue with your ISP’s assigned DNS, so changing it could help with the connection. Using free DNS like Cloudflare or Google is a good place to start, and you can check out our complete guide here.

Conclusion

If all else fails, there is a chance that the website or the host could be the problem and that there’s nothing you can do on your end. Since most hosts tend to promise near 100% uptime, usually if there’s an error they will do their best to resolve it ASAP, so try revising it an hour or two later to see if it loads.

How To Set Up Custom Email Domains On iCloud

One of the lesser known services that Apple launched recently is actually the ability to use custom domain names for iCloud Mail. For those unfamiliar, iCloud Mail is basically Apple’s own email service and platform, similar to Google’s Gmail, Yahoo, and so on.

Like most free email services, Apple provides users with their own address but it ends with @icloud.com. In many ways this isn’t a bad thing because it saves users from having to pay for their own domain and set it up. However, the downside is that like millions of other users, your email will be somewhat generic.

If you plan to use the email for work or professional reasons, it might not necessarily look very professional to be using a free email account, so there is a reason why some people choose to have a custom domain. The good news is that iCloud Mail now supports custom domains, so here’s what you need to do to set it up.

First Things First

Before you can set up a custom domain for iCloud Mail, there are several things you need to know and have done first:

  • Have an iCloud+ subscription (this is basically a paid iCloud storage plan)
  • You must have a primary iCloud Mail address already (how to create a primary iCloud Mail address)
  • You must have registered the domain beforehand
  • Your custom domain must already be able to receive emails (this is required for verification)
  • The device you send or receive email on using the custom domain must be iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and/or macOS 12 Monterey or later

Setting Up A Custom Domain For iCloud Mail

  1. Go to icloud.com/settings
  2. Under Custom Email Domain, click “Manage
  3. Choose whether or not this domain is just for you or for your family
  4. Enter the domain name you want to use and click “Continue”
  5. Unless you plan to add more than one custom domain, click “Add email address”
  6. Confirm the email address is correct
  7. You will then be sent a verification email to the address you provided
  8. Open the email and click the “Verify” button
  9. Log into your domain registrar’s website
  10. Go to the settings where you can update your MX records
  11. Apple advises you to delete your existing MX records and fill them in using information on this support page
  12. Once all the information is changed and saved, go back to iCloud Settings and click “Finish Set Up”
  13. Confirm your DNS records have been updated
  14. If you run into a DKIM error message, don’t worry, this is because DNS records can take a while to propagate through the system so this can take minutes or an entire day, so keep trying
  15. Once that’s done, you’ll have to specify a default outgoing email address (basically the email address that people will see when they receive email from you)
  16. You should also receive a confirmation email from iCloud to let you know the setup has been successful, and also receive notification prompts on your associated devices asking if you want to associate the new custom domain with iMessage and FaceTime

Keep in mind that at this time of writing, this is a relatively new feature as iOS and iPadOS 15 was released not too long ago, and macOS 12 Monterey has yet to be released. We suggest that maybe you don’t use this service as your daily driver until you’re confident that you can send and receive emails without a hitch.

DoorDash establishes $1M relief fund for restaurants hit by natural disasters

Over the next year, DoorDash has earmarked $1,000,000 to support local restaurants affected by state or federally declared natural disasters. With help from Hello Alice, it will distribute $10,000 grants to businesses that can use the funds to pay for essential expenses like rent, supplies and payroll in times of need. Starting on November 1st, the companies will process applications every three months, with funding to follow shortly thereafter.

Currently, the program is only available to restaurants in the US. Other eligibility requirements include that a business owner operate three restaurants or less. None of those locations may have generated more than $3 million in revenue over the last 12 months. Notably, a partnership with DoorDash or Caviar isn’t required to apply for the program.

The relief fund comes as food delivery apps face increasing scrutiny from local governments. The City of Chicago recently launched separate lawsuits against DoorDash and GrubHub, accusing the two companies of using bait-and-switch tactics to mislead consumers. New York City also recently passed sweeping legislation aimed at protecting workers of app-based delivery services.

'Call of Duty: Warzone' and 'Vanguard' anti-cheat updates include a kernel-level driver

Activision has unveiled its big, new approach to squashing hackers in Call of Duty: Warzone and Vanguard, and it’s a two-pronged system called RICOCHET Anti-Cheat. The first stage is a series of server-side enhancements that will better identify and remove cheaters from games, and this is scheduled to hit Warzone with the Pacific update later this year. These new server tools will be live in Vanguard when it comes out on November 5th.

The second prong is a PC kernel-level driver designed to monitor the deepest level of every player’s rig while they’re in-game, in an effort to stop outside software from sneaking in through this back door. The kernel, or ring 0, is the most privileged level of any PC, granting access to every layer of hardware, and generally reserved for things like graphics card drivers and trusted bits of the operating system. The RICOCHET Anti-Cheat kernel-level driver will only turn on when Warzone or Vanguard is active; it’s not an always-on situation.

While operating in the kernel isn’t uncommon for anti-cheat software, this is likely the most concerning part of Activision’s new plans for many players. Riot Games faced scrutiny in 2020 for implementing a similar kernel-level driver in Valorant, though the main issue was that it was always on, operating even when the game wasn’t active. (Confusingly, the Valorant anti-cheat system is called Vanguard).

This isn’t a new worry, either — in 2013, the always-on ring 0 anti-cheat system employed by ESEA was commandeered to turn unsuspecting players’ PCs into a secret bitcoin mining farm.

With these lessons in mind, Activision has stressed that RICOCHET will only be active when the associated game is live, saying specifically, “the driver shuts down when you exit the game and turns on when you start a new game.”

The kernel-level driver will hit Warzone alongside the Pacific update this year, and it’ll come to Vanguard at a later date.

Cheating has been a significant problem in Call of Duty: Warzonefor a long while now. Activision has banned more than 500,000 accounts since the game’s launch, though it’s not uncommon for matches to be riddled with aimbots and cheap hacks to this day. Players have been screaming for a robust anti-cheat system in Warzone and other Call of Duty titles, and RICOCHET is Activision’s kernel-level, not-always-on answer.
