HDMI 2.1 Expected To Be Announced At CES 2022

samsung es8000 review

The connectors are fairly standards. I would love having a 4th (or more) HDMI connector

Buying HDMI cables can already be confusing. This is because, if you didn’t already know, there are actually different versions of HDMI ports and cables. The current “standard” is HDMI 2.1, but it appears that things are going to get more confusing because come CES 2022, the HDMI Forum will be introducing a new version called HDMI 2.1a.

Basically what this means is that this will be a revised version of the HDMI 2.1 standard. It will come with a new feature in the form of Source-Based Tone Mapping. This is a new HDR feature that helps offload some of the HDR tone mapping to the source, like your computer, set-top box, and so on.

The idea is that by offloading some of the tone mapping, instead of having to completely rely on the output device like your TV or monitor, the workload will be shared which means that in theory, it should help optimize the workflow and help reduce lag times, better picture calibration, and more.

As to what this means for end-users, it seems that it might not be something to be concerned about because according to the HDMI Forum, they say that it will be possible for manufacturers to add support for HDMI 2.1a through a firmware update. However, when exactly we will see devices that support HDMI 2.1a out of the box remains to be seen, or when already-existing devices will be updated.

Apple Envisions Embedding Touch ID Into The Apple TV’s Remote

The remote control that comes with the Apple TV is pretty great to use as far as remote controls are concerned, but using it for any sort of input like entering search terms or passwords can be annoying. However, Apple thinks that they might have found a potential solution to that problem – Touch ID.

According to a patent discovered by Patently Apple, it seems that Apple is toying around with the idea of possibly embedding Touch ID into devices like the Apple TV’s remote. It will function like Touch ID on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, where users can authenticate themselves using biometric data.

This means that users can use Touch ID to authenticate themselves if they need to log into apps, download or purchase apps, and so on. However, what’s interesting about this implementation is that it can be transmitted wirelessly, meaning that instead of it being localized to the iPhone or a computer, it can transmit data over WiFi, infrared, Bluetooth, NFC, and more.

The patent also suggests that a Touch ID remote could also be used to control more than the Apple TV, like other smart home appliances. It has also been suggested that Touch ID could be used as a profile system, so depending on who’s using the remote, it could lock certain types of content. For example, if your kid wants to watch shows on Apple TV, once they verify themselves, shows or content rated for adults could be blocked.

That being said, there is no indication that suggests that Apple’s next Apple TV could have a Touch ID remote, but it’s an interesting idea we wouldn’t mind seeing realized.

Rumor Claims iPhone 14 Could Start With Lower Base Storage

Over the years, Apple has steadily increased the amount of base storage of its iPhones. Back in the day, the company would offer as little as 16GB for base storage, but with its latest iPhones, the company started off at 128GB as the base, which back in the day was the max that they would offer

However, according to analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong International Securities in a research note obtained by MacRumors, he believes this could change with the iPhone 14. Pu claims that for the iPhone 14, Apple might start things out rather low and offer an iPhone with a starting storage of a measly 64GB.

It is unclear why Apple would do such a thing and regress with their storage options. It is possible that maybe with the global chip shortage, Apple could only get their hands on 64GB storage for the lowest option. Alternatively, it could be a way to force customers to pay more, where customers might think that 64GB is ridiculous and just pay to upgrade to the more expensive 256GB option.

That being said, there is nothing officially announced yet so it’s best to take this with a grain of salt for now, but you can bet there will be a fair amount of outrage and ridiculing if Apple were to go through with this.

Instagram To Double Down On Videos For 2022

When Instagram first launched, it was a platform for people to share their photos, kind of like a more social version of other platforms like Flickr. However, over the years Instagram has grown and evolved to being more than just a photo sharing platform. It has become some kind of hybrid.

That being said, it doesn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Instagram will actually be shifting their focus more towards videos. In a post on Twitter by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, he revealed that for 2022, the company will be doubling down on their video efforts with features like Reels.

Video isn’t new to Instagram and the company has allowed users to post videos on their feed, Stories, and through IGTV. Reels is the company’s latest addition and was designed to help them compete against other platforms like TikTok, which has been exploding in popularity over the past couple of years.

We imagine that this could be one of the reasons why Instagram has chosen to focus more on its video efforts moving into 2022, so it will be interesting to see what kind of new features the company could launch to make themselves more competitive.

In addition to focusing on videos, Mosseri also stated that it plans to target its messaging service in 2022, where they’re hoping that more people can connect with each other through it.
