Google Improves Chrome’s Memory By Evaluating Hidden Windows

While Google Chrome is a fantastic browser, one of the criticisms it has faced multiple times throughout the year is how much of a memory/resource hog it is. This means that as feature-rich as it might be and how well it might render and load websites, for some users, it might be too resource-intensive to be used as a daily driver.

However, in a recent blog post, Google has detailed some of the changes that they have made that will make it more memory efficient. One of those changes comes in the form of hidden windows, which means that by being able to figure out and determine hidden tabs and windows. By taking this into account, Chrome can then allocate a computer’s resources accordingly.

For example, if you have tabs that you’re not using, obviously it makes sense that Chrome not allocate resources to it. According to Google, based on these changes they’ve made, they found that there is an 8.5% to 25.8% in terms of faster startup, 3.1% reduction in GPU memory usage, and 20.4% few renderer frames drawn overall.

These changes have actually been made and rolled out to Chrome Windows users back in 2020, so you should already see them. For those with higher-end rigs, maybe this will be less obvious, but for those with older computers with less amounts of RAM or are using integrated GPUs, then perhaps it might be time to revisit Chrome as your primary browser again.

Apple Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Apple Watch Screen

Apple has made claims over the years over the materials they use to make the Apple Watch’s display, such as how it is strong and durable. However, it appears that there is a particular issue with the Apple Watch that has resulted in owners of the smartwatch to file a class action lawsuit against Apple.

According to the lawsuit, this is a problem that has affected the first-gen Apple Watch up until the Series 6. Basically, the lawsuit alleges that the Apple Watch’s lithium are prone to swelling, which basically results in the battery pressing up against the display causing it to fail and in some cases, break.

The complaint also includes a picture of a deep laceration suffered on the arm of one plaintiff which was allegedly caused when the screen broke. The lawsuit is now seeking damages on behalf of Apple Watch users, as well as for Apple to disclose what they are claiming is “the defective nature of the Apple Watch”.

It will cover pretty much all users of the first-gen Apple Watch up to the Series 6 including the Apple Watch SE.

That being said, this is not the first time Apple has been hit with a lawsuit over the Apple Watch’s display. There was a similar lawsuit filed against Apple in 2018, but the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed by a federal judge in 2019.

Facebook Launches Live Chat Feature For Users Who Are Locked Out Out Their Accounts

If you’ve ever had the unfortunate experience of being locked out of your Facebook account for whatever reason, then you know that trying to get in touch with Facebook support can be tricky. This is why more often than not, you see a lot of comments on Facebook made posts where people are asking Facebook why they haven’t heard back from support yet.

To help streamline the process and make it easier, Meta has since announced that they will be launching a new live chat feature for Facebook that will make it easier for users who are locked out of their accounts to chat with customer support. This will help users reach a resolution faster, or at least potentially.

According to Meta’s announcement, “On the Facebook App specifically, we’ve also started testing live chat help for some English-speaking users globally, including creators, who’ve been locked out of their accounts. This first test focuses on those who cannot access their accounts due to unusual activity or whose accounts have been suspended due to a violation of Community Standards.”

As the announcement notes, this is only for English-speaking users, but presumably Meta will eventually expand support to cover more users who speak other languages.

OnePlus Pulls Android 12 Update For OnePlus 9

Earlier this week, we reported that OnePlus had started to roll out the Android 12 update to the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro smartphones. If you haven’t updated your phone yet and don’t see the update, it is because the company has since announced that they have actually pulled the update for the phones.

This is according to various user reports in which many users were posting on Twitter, Reddit, and OnePlus’ forums where they were encountering all manner of bugs that made their phones difficult to use. This included basic phone functions like making or receiving phone calls, a broken Autofill feature, the inability to change icons, customize status bar icons, and more.

According to OnePlus who has since acknowledged the issues, “We are aware of the issues caused by the OxygenOS 12 update and our software team is fixing them. We will suspend this software update and roll out a new iteration as soon as possible.” We’re not sure when the fixed update will start rolling out again, but for now users will have to wait.

If you’ve already updated to Android 12 and you’re wondering what to do about it, don’t worry because OnePlus has also since published a guide on the forums where it shows users how they can roll back to the less buggy previous version of OxygenOS. That might be worth checking out if these bugs are getting a bit too much for you.
