Proposed Bill Would Force Social Media Companies To Share Data With Third-Party Researchers

Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram hold a lot of data on us. Some of this data is user submitted, where we express our likes and dislikes based on posts we interact with, people and accounts we follow, and so on. However, there is also a lot of data being collected that we might not necessarily know about.

Researchers have tried over the years to try and gauge and study the data that these platforms have collected, but some of them have made it difficult to do so. So much so that a new bill sponsored by Senators Klobuchar (D-MN), Coons (D-DE), and Portman (R-OH) is proposing that social media companies have to share with third-party researchers should it be requested.

The reason behind this bill, as we stated previously, is because some social media platforms have made it difficult to request such data under normal circumstances. There have been reports in the past where Meta (which owns Facebook) has been found to provide incomplete data sets, and not too long ago, they also deplatformed New York University researchers who were trying to study misinformation and political ads found on Facebook.

It is unclear if this bill will be signed and become law, but it is clear that some lawmakers think that maybe it’s time that social media companies stop self-policing themselves.

Tests Show M1 Max MacBook Pro Is A Powerhouse For Photo Editing

A few months ago, Apple officially unveiled the M1 Max and Pro chipsets that would be used in the company’s revamped MacBook Pro laptops. These are essentially souped up versions of the M1 chipset that launched in 2020, and the M1 Max and Pro MacBook Pros do not come cheap.

However, for professionals who take and edit photos for a living, it might be a price that might be justifiable. This is according to a series of tests conducted by CNET in which they found that editing photos in Adobe Lightroom on the M1 Max has shaved a lot of time off the editing process, which could be invaluable in a photographer’s workflow.

For example in their tests, merging six 30MP Canon DNG images into a panorama took the M1 Max took about 14 seconds, versus the 67 seconds it took on a 2019 Intel i7 MacBook Pro. This difference was made even more abundantly clear when it merged two 151MP Phase One images, which took 34 seconds on the M1 Max, but almost three times longer at 109 seconds on the Intel MacBook Pro.

For regular users who might edit a couple of photos every now and then, this probably won’t matter as much, but when you’re a professional that needs to churn out dozens of edits a day, a few seconds here and there most definitely adds up over time.

Marvel’s Eternals Will Arrive On Disney+ In January

With the pandemic still ongoing, going to places like the cinema might not be particularly feasible, or at least some people might not be comfortable being in an enclosed space with a lot of other people. This is why many movie studios have found other ways of releasing their movies, such as through streaming services.

For those who have been eagerly anticipating Marvel’s Eternals but don’t want to go to the movies, you’ll be pleased to learn that Disney has announced that in January 2022, Eternals will be available for streaming through its Disney+ platform. It will be streamable in the IMAX Enhanced format if you enjoy watching movies in that format.

While some of Disney’s movies in 2020 and 2021 were released directly to Disney+, some of which were released with a premium fee on top of it, like Black Widow, the company has been slowly moving away from this release format, like with Shang-Chi where the movie was released in cinemas first before it eventually made its way onto Disney+.

The same treatment is being given to Eternals, but it is expected to be the last movie to do so before Disney goes back to its more traditional releases. Movies will eventually make its way onto Disney+, but the window between cinema and Disney+ releases will be longer.

Sony Might Hold Off Camera Announcements Until Second Half Of 2022

Every year, Sony announces new cameras. These announcements take place throughout the year, but it seems that come 2022, Sony might hold off on announcing any new camera until the second half of 2022. Why is this, you ask? It turns out the global chip shortage is to blame for all of this, according to Sony Alpha Rumors.

As you might have heard, the world is currently facing a chip shortage which has caused all kinds of product delays across various industries, such as gaming, mobile devices, and more. So it shouldn’t really come as a surprise to learn that it has affected cameras as well, so for Sony to delay announcements until the later part of the year makes sense.

While it is possible for Sony to announce their cameras anytime they want, we suppose a responsible thing to do would be to announce them when they have enough inventory to fulfil orders with, otherwise customers might have to end up waiting an extended period of time for their orders which probably wouldn’t go down well.

That being said, this is just a rumor for now so obviously you need to be a bit skeptical about taking it as fact, but if you were hoping to upgrade your Sony camera next year, you might have to wait a bit.

Sony Apparently Had Plans To Bring PlayStation Now To Mobile Devices

If you’re a PlayStation owner, there’s a good chance you know about Sony’s PlayStation Now streaming service. This is Sony’s game streaming service that was launched several years ago, but it is currently only available on Sony’s PlayStation consoles and PCs.

However, according to a report from The Verge, they have uncovered confidential documents during the Epic VS Apple trial that revealed that Sony apparently had plans to bring the service onto mobile devices.

The reason why this was mentioned during the trial was because Apple was trying to explain their plans to launch their own subscription service which was later known as Apple Arcade, and somehow Apple managed to find out information that revealed Sony’s upcoming plans. Obviously PlayStation Now never did launch on any other platform aside from PlayStation and PC, but it has been suggested that Sony ultimately decided that this wasn’t something they wanted to compete with Apple.

It would also be a good way to cater to die hard PlayStation fans to encourage them to buy Sony’s consoles in order to access the service.

That being said, given Apple’s massive hoops that companies would have to jump through in order to launch streaming apps onto its platform, it makes sense. More recently, we have also heard about Microsoft had tried to convince Apple to allow its streaming services on the App Store by offering up Xbox exclusive titles, but that ultimately never came to pass.

Photos Of Oppo’s First Foldable Phone Have Leaked Online

It looks like Oppo is getting into the foldables game. The company published a blog post in which they announced their first foldable phone ahead of the INNO Day event. The post doesn’t really tell us much except to tease a side profile of the phone and to talk about the company’s plans and motivations behind the device.

The handset is expected to be called the Oppo Find N and according to the company, development actually started back in 2018. “As early as April 2018, the first generation of the Find N prototype was born internally. Although a handful of other brands have already introduced foldable devices to the market, barriers such as utility, durability and user experience continue to prevent foldable devices from becoming a more feasible daily driver for most people.”

For those who can’t wait until next week, which is when INNO Day is expected to kick off, leakster Evan Blass shared a ton of new renders of the upcoming handset, which you can see in the tweet above. For the most part it looks like a typical foldable phone, although it looks like it might have a slightly wider front display.

This is versus the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 whose front display is kind of “thin”, whereas the Find N’s display looks more like your standard phone. We’re judging this based on the renders so in real-life, it might be different. Either way, we’ll have more details next week so check back with us on the 15th of December for more updates.
