Virtual modular synth VCV Rack 2 is now available

VCV Rack 2 has arrived, and it could help you figure out if modular synthesis is something you can get into before blowing a fortune on it. The original app dropped in 2017, giving you access to thousands of virtual modules that let you try Eurorack for free. This upgraded app comes with a completely redesigned user interface with a dark room mode and a much better module browser than its predecessor. VCV has a library of almost 2,700 modules, and the new browser will make them easier to sort with its category filters and the capability to highlight the modules you use the most.

While the app itself is still free to download and use, there’s now a Pro version that includes a VST plugin for full integration into the digital audio workstation of your choice. That means you’ll be able to use VCV Rack within Ableton, Logic or even GarageBand. The Pro tier also comes with professional support — and the promise of more plugin formats in the future. Rack 2’s paid version will set you back $99 until 2022, though you can also get it bundled with VCV Drums and VCV Sound Stage for $209. You can get both paid and free VCV Rack 2 versions right now from its official page.

Chrome OS 96 brings more camera features and Android Nearby Share

Although Google is perhaps best known for Android as far as operating systems go, it does have a number of platforms under its name. In some aspects, however, Chrome OS feels like it’s still catching up … Continue reading

Nokia 9 PureView Owners Won’t Get Android 11

The Nokia 9 PureView was released back in 2019 and was considered a flagship phone, but unfortunately for owners of the device, it seems that the phone isn’t being treated as such because according to a message on the Nokia website, it appears that the phone will not be updated to Android 11.

Yes, a phone that’s about 2 years old isn’t even getting Android 11, and don’t get us started on Android 12! According to the company, “Nokia phones are about offering the best possible smartphone experience, day in and day out. It’s something we take pride in. That is why we had to make the tough choice not to offer the Android 11 software upgrade for Nokia 9 PureView. Incompatibilities between the camera and the software would have led to a compromised experience that does not meet our high standards.”

To make it up to those who did buy the phone, the company has announced they will instead be offering customers a 50% discount on a budget Nokia phone like the Nokia XR20. It’s a very odd decision because why would anyone go from a high-end device to a budget handset, one that they would still have to pay for even with a 50% discount, just for an Android update?

Judging from the comments on Twitter, it seems that many owners of the handset aren’t too thrilled by this and moving forwards, we’re not sure if this is going to do the Nokia brand any favors.

Next-Gen iPhone SE Expected In Q1 2022

If the rumors are to be believed, in 2022 Apple may no longer be launching the iPhone mini series. This means that if you wanted an low-cost iPhone, or at least relatively low-cost, then the iPhone SE series would be your best bet, and according to the latest reports, the next-gen iPhone SE is expected to launch in Q1 2022.

This is according to research firm TrendForce who believes that Apple might announce a new iPhone SE in the first quarter of 2022. The last time Apple updated the iPhone SE was in 2020 where it launched in April. Apple skipped a new model for 2021, so it makes sense that 2022 could be a likely candidate for the next model in the lineup.

According to the TrendForce report, “In terms of product development, Apple is staying with the plan to release its third-generation iPhone SE in 1Q22 and four models under a new series in 2H22. The third-generation iPhone SE is expected to be a major instrument in helping Apple establish a presence in the market segment for mid-range 5G smartphones. Its production volume for 2022 is forecasted to reach 25-30 million units.”

As per the rumors, the next-gen iPhone SE could support 5G which means that for those who want a 5G iPhone but don’t want to pay for the flagship series, this could be a good alternative. The design of the phone is expected to continue drawing inspiration from the iPhone 8 and will feature a 4.7-inch display and Touch ID. The main draw is also said to be the inclusion of 5G and a faster chipset.

16-inch MacBook Pro Not Charging When The Laptop Is Shutdown

Apple’s brand new 16-inch MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful laptop, not to mention very expensive. It isn’t the perfect laptop, but when you’re paying $2,000 for a laptop, you’d expect that the basic functions would work, such as charging the laptop, right? Unfortunately, some users are experiencing some weird issues with it.

According to several posts on Reddit, it appears that some users are discovering that when their laptops are shutdown, the laptop is unable to charge. It is a very specific scenario so not all users might experience it. Basically, if your laptop is unplugged and you shutdown and then plug in the MagSafe charger, it will make a ping sound and the connector’s LED will flash in a continuous loop and won’t charge the laptop.

This isn’t an issue if your laptop has been continuously plugged in and if your battery is above 80%, so like we said, it’s a very specific scenario in order to replicate this issue. This also only seems to affect the 16-inch MacBook Pro when using the 140W charging brick that comes with the laptop, but interestingly enough, if you use USB-C to charge it, then this isn’t an issue.

Also, if you plug in the MagSafe charger before you shutdown, this won’t be a problem either, so those are temporary workarounds. Some users claim to have taken the laptop to the Apple Store and have been told that Apple is aware and is investigating the problem, while some were offered replacements.
