iPhone 15 Could Ditch The SIM Card Slot

Apple’s iPhones currently feature the use of both physical and digital SIM cards. This allows the iPhone to actually support dual SIM without users having to insert two physical SIM cards. It’s actually a pretty useful feature, but come the iPhone 15, Apple will apparently ditch the SIM card slot for good.

This is according to Brazilian website Blog do iPhone who claims that the iPhone 15 Pro might not come with the SIM card slot. It should be noted that the iPhone 15 series is only expected to arrive in 2023, meaning that we’re two years away before we can conclusively prove that this rumor is accurate.

Plus, as MacRumors notes, Blog do iPhone doesn’t have much of a track record when it comes to Apple related rumors, so there’s no reason to fully trust this information yet. However, what’s interesting is that we’ve been hearing rumors that Apple is apparently working on a portless iPhone.

By ditching the SIM card slot, it would allow Apple to create a more seamless design that would also allow the phone to be more water-resistant as there would be one less ingress point. Of course, we doubt that this is the main reason why Apple would drop the SIM card slot, but could be one of the reasons. Either way, it’s best to treat it with a healthy dose of skepticism for now until we can get more proof.

Dutch Regulators Will Now Require Apple To Provide Alternative Payment Methods For Dating Apps

One of the things that developers are demanding from Apple is that the company allow them to use alternative payment platforms. This would allow them to sell their apps and in-app purchases without having to give a massive 30% cut to Apple. For developers that generate millions in revenue, this 30% is a huge sum of money.

However, Apple has largely resisted the idea. The company even managed to win a stay in their case against Epic which meant that they would not have to implement changes to the App Store for now. That being said, that doesn’t appear to be the case over in the Netherlands where Dutch regulators are now forcing Apple to allow third-party payments.

This is according to a report from iCulture who discovered that Dutch regulators are saying that Apple will need to allow third-party payments in the App Store or risk paying 5 million euros a week in fines. However, what’s odd about this is that this requirement is only for dating apps such as Tinder.

We’re not sure why the focus is on dating apps and not other apps in the App Store. Perhaps developers of dating apps have stronger lobbying in the Netherlands and managed to make this request, but we suppose it’s better than nothing and could help establish precedent.

Researchers Create A Lickable Display That Lets You Taste What’s On The Screen

How often have you watched a food show on TV and the host tells you, “If only you could taste this.” However, there is some good news on that front because thanks to Professor Homei Miyashita of Meiji University, they have created a prototype display that lets you taste what’s on the screen when you lick it.

How this works is that ten canisters will spray flavor onto a “hygienic film” that will be placed over the screen. From there, users can then lick the screen to taste what’s being shown. The best part is that according to Miyashita, it is estimated that if made commercially, such a display wouldn’t cost that much and would be around $875.

Speaking to Reuters (paywall), Miyashita said, “The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home.” Miyashita goes on to state that he envisions a world where people could download “taste content”. So imagine you’re thinking of visiting a restaurant but you’ve never been there before, so the restaurant could create downloadable “taste content” that will give you a sneak peek.

It’s a very novel idea but it’s an interesting one. Whether or not there will be a lot of commercial value to such technology remains to be seen.

Google Fit For iPhone Can Now Measure Your Heart Rate

These days with wearables being so cheap and with so many brands to choose from, it’s not that hard to find either a fitness tracker or a smartwatch that can track your heart rate. However, if you don’t have plans to hop on board the wearable bandwagon just yet, don’t worry because there are apps for that.

Google has recently updated its Google Fit app for iOS devices in which it can now measure your heart rate using your iPhone’s camera. How this is done is users place their finger on their iPhone’s camera and apply some light pressure to it, and from there, the app will attempt to read the changes in the color of your fingers to determine your heart rate.

It will take about 30 seconds for it to read your heart rate, after which the results will be shown at the bottom of the screen. Google had previously introduced a similar feature to its Android app, so it looks like it has finally made its way onto the iPhone as well. That being said, this feature is more akin to capturing your heart rate in the moment, as opposed to wearables that can provide users with continuous tracking.

However, it could be handy if you’re not feeling well and want to see if there could be something wrong. Google does note that the feature isn’t meant to be used as a diagnosis tool, but like we said, it could be useful if you feel that something isn’t quite right with yourself and you want to bring these results to your doctor for further consultation.

Huawei P50 Pocket Is Here To Challenge Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip

Samsung’s early foldable efforts were greeted by a lukewarm reception. There were issues with the durability of the phone, it was expensive, and there were a host of other issues, but that was to be expected. It was new tech after all, but with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, it looked like Samsung finally turned things around.

So much so that it has garnered enough attention where the competition, like Huawei, have decided to hop on board the bandwagon as well. The company has recently taken the wraps off their latest smartphone called the Huawei P50 Pocket, which features a design very reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Flip series.

The phone itself unfolds to unveil a 6.9-inch 120Hz OLED display with a 2790×1188 resolution. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, which is an odd choice given that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be debuting next year, and will also feature 8-12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

Similar to the Galaxy Z Flip, Huawei has opted to give the outer portion of the phone its own display, which in the P50 Pocket’s case comes in the form of a circular cutout, kind of like Huawei’s smartwatches. The phone is also expected to feature three cameras – a 40MP main shooter, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 32MP ultra spectrum camera.

It will be priced starting at around $1,410 and will be initially sold in China, but there are plans to eventually bring it to international markets.

Watch the James Webb Space Telescope launch at 7:20 AM ET

After far too many delays over the years to count, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has a launch date. Provided there’s not another last-minute setback, the successor to Hubble Space Telescope is scheduled to take flight on Saturday, December 25th.

NASA expects the Ariane 5 rocket carrying the JWST to lift off no earlier than 7:20AM ET on Christmas Day from the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana. You can watch the entire event unfold, beginning with pre-launch coverage, starting at 3AM ET. The space agency will broadcast the launch on its NASA Live website, as well as on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Twitch.

Understandably, there’s a lot of excitement for the JWST to finally make its way into space. Not only will a successful launch represent the end of a tumultuous 14-year development cycle, but the telescope, with its far more advanced sensors than Hubble, will afford astronomers to glimpse at black holes and early galaxies in a way they haven’t been able to do in the past.

XPG's concept mouse has an SSD so you can store your games in it

Have you ever looked at your mouse and thought “it’s fine, but kind of a big fat waste of space?” Gaming accessory company XPG apparently did, because it’s just unveiled a concept mouse for CES 2022 with a built-in high-speed SSD drive stuffed inside, Digital Trends has reported.

The XPG Vault Gaming Mouse is a wired USB-C mouse that the company calls a “gaming library in the palm of your hand.” The prototype model supports up to 1TB of memory that can run at a surprisingly fast 985 MB/s. The storage can be controlled by XPG’s gaming software app. “Gaming Launcher software… promises to make your gaming libraries conveniently portable and [add] a higher level of game integration with XPG Prime Software Ecosystem,” the company said.

It looks like a pretty normal mouse, though it’d require a pretty stout USB-C cable to support those kind of speeds. It’s not the worst idea we’ve heard, because it gives you some high-speed storage while freeing up a USB slot that’d normally be taken by a wired mouse. XPG didn’t mention the mouse’s DPI or any other gaming specs.

Mice with built-in USB storage aren’t unheard of, though we haven’t seen anything notable recently. Wild gadgets often pop up at CES, however, helping companies grab some attention and publicity. Aside from the prototype mouse, XPG also unveiled some products that could come to market next year including PCIe Gen5X SSDs, DDR5 DRAM and the XPG Wired/Wireless Alpha gaming mouse.
