Instagram Starts Testing Subscriptions In The US

Last year, it was reported that Instagram was looking to launch a subscription service where creators could lock content behind a subscription that users could pay to unlock. Now according to a report from TechCrunch, it appears that Instagram has started to roll out the feature as part of a test over in the US.

However, as it stands, only 10 creators were chosen to take part in this test which means that it represents the tiniest fraction of Instagram users. The company is treating this like an alpha test so it’s understandable that they aren’t giving all users access to it right now, and are also seeking feedback from fans and creators at the same time.

It’s an interesting direction for Instagram, but one that’s not completely unheard of. For example, over on YouTube, the platform also offers creators to create a subscription service that fans of the channel or creator can join. We’ve also seen creators try to create their own subscription service using other platforms like Patreon, where usually they offer up additional content like behind-the-scenes footage, or giving subscribers early access before the public.

Instagram’s subscription feature will allow creators to choose from various price points. This starts as low as $0.99 a month to as much as $99..99 a month, which presumably Instagram will be getting a cut of. There is no word on when the feature will be rolled out to all users, but as this is the alpha, it could be a while before it is eventually available to all.

Canon’s New EOS RC Combines A Cinema And Stills Camera Into One Body

These days, pretty much all cameras come with the ability to record video, with the higher-end cameras supporting resolution like 4K at 60fps. However, for the most part, a lot of these cameras were designed with photography in mind, meaning that videographers would probably need a dedicated video camera if they wanted to get the most out of their shots.

However, it appears that Canon is trying to streamline that process as the company has announced the EOS RC. This is a full frame mirrorless camera that combines features and functionality of a cinema camera along with a stills camera, meaning that on paper, you should be able to get the best of both worlds.

It features a 45MP CMOS sensor with dual pixel autofocus and can also record video of up to 8K in resolution and 60fps. There is also an active cooling system built into the camera to prevent it from overheating when capturing video. There is also support for Canon’s Cinema Raw Light, HLG orPQ formats, XF-AVC codec, and Canon’s Log 3 gamma.

That being said, given that this combines the functionality of two cameras in one, it will not come cheap. The Canon EOS RC is expected to be available for purchase this coming March where it will be priced at $4,499.

Google Will Finally Be Ending Its Free Legacy G Suite Accounts

Many, many years ago, Google offered users the ability to use a custom domain that would be linked up to various Google products or services. For example, instead of using Gmail.com as your email, you could use a custom domain but continue to use Gmail as your interface and platform of choice.

In fact, it was actually offered for free to users who did not want to pay for extras (you’d have to pay for your own custom domain, though). Google later ended that offer but for those who were grandfathered in, they could continue to use that service without any issue, at least until now where the company has announced that they will be killing off its legacy G Suite accounts.

According to an announcement by the company, they state that all G Suite legacy free edition subscriptions will now need to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription. This will come into effect on the 1st of May, 2022 and for those that do not respond by then, Google states that they will “suspend” those accounts for 60 days, meaning that you get to access your account but some features may no longer be available until you start paying for the new subscription..

Based on the current subscription, it will cost users $6 a month for a Business Starter plan that comes with 30GB of storage, or $8 a month for a personal plan. More information on these changes can be found on Google’s support page.

Not only do you have to schedule tech support appointments to install your service, but you also have to figure out where you’re going to put your modem and possibly a router if the modem doesn’t have one in it. Of course, there are other things to worry about, … Continue reading

Airstream's concept electric camping trailer propels itself

Even Airstream is getting in on electric vehicles. According to Autoblog, the Thor brand has introduced a pair of EV concepts that include the eStream, a self-propelled camper. The dual-motor trailer not only reduces the burden on the towing vehicle, but can be remote-controlled from your phone to help you hitch up, reverse or simply move your camp site. You can even use the motors to shift the weight distribution, so you might not need a special hitch to handle certain trailer loads.

The other concept, the Thor Vision Vehicle, is a Ford Transit-based electric RV. The design is conventional, but Thor teased a “best in class” 300-mile range along with a digital cockpit that includes extensive tools to find chargers along your route.

There’s no mention of whether or not the eStream or TVV will lead to ready-to-buy models, let alone timeframes for production. However, it’s easy to see both reaching customers. Campers and other trailers significantly limit the range of any towing vehicle, and often demand extra power. While an electric camper like the eStream would have its own challenges (the weight and wear of its batteries, for instance), it could limit the overall impact on range and make towing an option for vehicles that would normally struggle.

That may not be a big deal going forward, however, as YouTube Shorts has ushered in a … Continue reading

Twitter Communities hits Android four months after its debut

Twitter Communities, a topic-based groups feature that landed on iOS and the web last year, has arrived on Android. In the latest version of Twitter’s Android app, you’ll be able to find groups related to your interests and chat with like-minded people.

There are communities for interests as varied as plants, skincare, space, design, fashion, Xbox and R&B. There’s even one where you can share your Wordle scores if you want to be part of that conversation without annoying your followers.

Although users can’t set up their own community as easily as they might with say, a Facebook Group or subreddit, they can suggest a new one that they’d like to create and moderate. Twitter says it will keep them in mind as it adds more communities.

Twitter has laid out some of its other plans for Communities in 2022. For one thing, it’s looking into a third type of membership beyond invite-only and open-to-all formats, in which users could request to join. Admins and mods would be able to let them in or deny the request. Also in the pipeline are a ranked timeline (though the chronological timeline will still be available), Q&As and ways for mods to highlight some of a community’s best content.
