Woman Uses AirTag To Track Her Moving Company Truck

So, Apple’s AirTags have been getting quite a bit of bad press lately when we started hearing reports of people using it to track and stalk others without their permission, but here’s a story of the use of the AirTags that was actually used in a relatively constructive manner.

Valerie McNulty, an army spouse, tends to move quite often, and as such she has heard countless horror stories involving the moving process. Deciding to pre-empt any potential issues, she slipped an AirTag into one of the boxes of her family’s household goods while she was preparing for a move from Fort Colson, Colorado, to Fort Drum, New York.

It turned out to be an excellent idea because she was expecting her things to arrive on the 7th of January, which was a Friday, but the moving company told her to expect it on Sunday. She later got a call from the truck driver who told her he had only just picked up her stuff and that the earliest he could get to her place would be Monday.

Using the AirTag, she managed to check the location of her items and discovered that the driver was actually already in Elizabeth, New Jersey, about a half day’s drive to her current location. According to McNulty, “When we brought up the fact that we knew his exact location he hung up on us. He then called back several minutes later and said ‘well the earliest I can get it to you is Sunday.’”

McNulty says that she had been in touch with the move coordinator all day but apparently they did not know where the driver was either, meaning that had it not been for the AirTag, McNulty would have to take the driver at their word.

YouTube Calls It Quits On YouTube Originals

In order to compete with the likes of Netflix, several years ago, YouTube announced YouTube Originals. This is basically where YouTube helps to fund and produce original content for its platform that would only be available to those who are subscribed to its YouTube Premium service.

However, fast forward several years later, it looks like YouTube is calling it quits. In a letter posted onto Twitter,  Robert Kyncl, Chief Business Officer at YouTube, announced that YouTube Originals will be coming to an end. According to Kyncl, it seems that the company will now take their resources and invest it in other areas of the platform such as Creator Shorts Fund, Black Voices Fund, and Live Shopping.

Kyncl also revealed that another reason for shutting the program down is due to the departure of Susanne Daniels, the Global Head of Originals, so combining that with other factors has led the company to decide to scrap its Originals. YouTube will still produce original content, but those will fall under its Black Voices and YouTube Kids Funds

The company is also expected to complete production on shows that were already ordered and are in the process of being made prior to this announcement, but don’t expect anything new or major after that.

Google Working On A Feature To Share Files Amongst Your Own Devices

Want to share files amongst your own devices? If you’re in Apple’s ecosystem, that would be as simple as AirDropping a file from your iPhone/iPad to your Mac and vice versa. On Google’s platforms like Android or Chrome OS, that becomes a little bit more tricky as it involves either sending the file to the cloud, emailing it to yourself, or connecting your device to your PC.

Google has attempted to create their own version of AirDrop called Nearby Share, but it’s not quite the same as AirDrop, but Google could be looking to change that. According to a sighting in the Chrome Gerrit, it appears that Google is working on an update to Nearby Share that will result in a new feature called “Self Share”.

As the name implies, this will make it easier for users to share files amongst their devices. This means that if you’re working on a device like a Chromebook, you can then use this Self Share feature to send a file from that Chromebook onto your Android phone. This feature will be part of Nearby Share and should be available in the Nearby Share menu where the option will be called “Send to Your Devices”.

We’re not sure when the feature is expected to be available to all users, but since it is currently in Chrome Gerrit, it’s next step would be to make its way into Chrome Canary before it eventually rolls out to more users and everyone else.

Many iPhone users speak to Siri on a daily basis, but have you ever wondered where Siri’s voice comes from? While these days Apple uses fancy machine learning and computer speech to generate Siri’s tone and inflection, back in the virtual assistant’s early days, her voice was based on … Continue reading

Google Play Games are available on Windows in a three-country beta

You can now play Google Play Games on Windows — if you live in the right country. Google has launched a registration-based beta offering access to “popular” Play Games titles on Windows PCs in Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. If you get in, you can hop into titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Summoners War without reaching for an Android phone or Chromebook. You can take advantage of the larger screen and extra input options, and your progress will still sync across platforms.

Google said it would offer details of later betas and expansions “soon.” It previously committed to a generic 2022 rollout.

This still leaves many gamers without access, and the current catalog won’t thrill players who want to play any Google Play title they want. Even so, it’s a big milestone for Google. While the company has long made Google Play media services available to Windows (if typically through the web), games have been a glaring exception. Not that the loosened requirements will necessarily hurt Google — the goal is to provide a seamless leap from an Android phone or Chrome OS machine, so the company wins regardless of how you play.
