Apple Still Wants Its App Commissions Regardless Of Payment Method

There is quite a bit of push right now for companies like Apple to adopt third-party payment methods when it comes to app purchases or in-app purchases. The idea is that by allowing third-party payments, it would allow developers to find alternative methods of payments that would let them avoid paying Apple a 30% cut from their app sales.

However, it seems that Apple still wants its commissions, regardless of whether developers choose to use their payment methods or third-party alternatives. This is according to a developer support page in the Netherlands where the company states that regardless of what developers choose to use, they will still need to pay Apple a commission.

The reason for the update on the Netherland’s developer page is due to an order from the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets where Apple will allow dating apps in the region to use alternative payment methods. However, presumably Apple’s intentions are going to be the same for all other regions and will probably expand to cover non-dating apps as well.

It is unclear how Apple plans on calculating the commissions they receive or how much they plan to take. Right now, Apple pretty much takes a 30% cut, but there are instances where it can be lowered to 15%.

Developer Gets CarPlay Up And Running On His Tesla

With Tesla cars featuring huge displays for its infotainment system, it feels like it would be perfect for platforms like Apple’s CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto. However, CarPlay isn’t supported by Tesla and we’re not sure if there are plans to ever make it an option for customers, but that did not stop one developer from trying.

Polish developer Michał Gapiński decided that instead of waiting to see if Tesla would eventually add support for CarPlay, he decided to do it himself. What’s interesting is that how Gapiński achieved this was by taking a Raspberry Pi running on a custom build of Android, so in a way it’s kind of ironic that this workaround actually uses everything except Apple’s own products or services.

However, it should be noted that this isn’t the most ideal of setups. This is because the project is still in the early stages of development and so far, one of the main limitations is that he has to use a mouse connected to the Raspberry Pi in order to navigate the CarPlay interface, which kind of defeats the entire purpose of CarPlay to begin with.

The good news is that according to Gapiński, there are plans to eventually share his workaround once it is polished. We have no idea when that will be, but it might be something that Tesla owners with an iPhone can look forward to in the future if they don’t mind tinkering around.

Apple To Fully Complete Their Transition To Apple Silicon By End Of 2022

In 2020 when Apple announced their plans to transition away from Intel processors to their own custom Apple Silicon chipsets, the company estimated that it would take them about two years. Now that we’re in 2022, it looks like Apple could actually be meeting their goal by the end of the year.

This is according to a tweet by leaker Dylandkt on Twitter where he claims that the transition will be fully complete in the fourth quarter of the year, with the Mac Pro being the last Apple computer to adopt the Apple Silicon chipset. To date, almost all of Apple’s computers have made the change to the Apple Silicon save for the 27-inch iMac and Mac Pro.

What’s interesting about the tweet is that Dylandkt claims that for the Mac Pro, Apple will actually be using the M1 and not the M2, which is largely believed to be debuting this year. The leaker claims that the Mac Pro’s processor will actually be based on the M1 and will be an extension of the M1 Max with more cores.

We have heard rumors that the Mac Pro with Apple Silicon could feature as many as 40-cores and Dylandkt’s claims are in line with a report from The Information back in November 2021 where they too suggested that the computer would use a variation of the M1 Max.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 raised a record $3.4 million for charity

The latest Awesome Games Done Quick speedrunning marathon is in the books. After another week of players showing off their skills and romping through games as quickly as possible, AGDQ 2022 raised $3,416,729 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. That’s a record total for any Games Done Quick event in the organization’s 12-year history.

According to GDQ’s tracker, the highest donation was $236,656 and the median pledge was $25. AGDQ 2022 speedran to $1 million in donations, hitting that threshold faster than any previous GDQ event.

AGDQ once again took place as an online-only event amid COVID-19 concerns. Even though there wasn’t an in-person audience to hype up the players, there were still some remarkable runs. For instance, a runner named Mitchriz used audio cues and a deep knowledge of the notoriously difficult Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to beat the game in two hours while blindfolded.

Runners broke some world records during the event too, including in Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Pumpkin Jack and Webbed. You can catch up on those runs, and everything else from AGDQ, on the Games Done Quick YouTube channel.

GDQ will next host an all-women speedrunning event called Frost Fatales, which takes place between February 27th and March 5th. As usual, you’ll be able to watch it live on Twitch. Summer Games Done Quick will return later this year.

US Airlines Warn That 5G Could Wreak Havoc On Plane Instruments

Ahead of 5G becoming mainstream, there have been some concerns regarding the technology, namely from certain groups of people who have shared conspiracy theories about it like how 5G can cause illnesses. Many experts have since decried these claims to be untrue, but it turns out that 5G could actually have a negative impact on certain things, like airplanes.

According to a report from Reuters, it appears that the CEOs of major US airlines have published a letter warning that the new C-Band 5G services that are being planned for rollout by AT&T and Verizon could actually ground a lot of widebody aircrafts and cause “chaos” for US flights that could lead thousands of Americans overseas stranded.

This is because of potential interference from these 5G bands that could have an impact on sensitive airplane instruments such as altimeters that could hamper low-visibility operations. This doesn’t mean that airlines don’t believe in 5G, but rather they are asking that 5G towers be placed further away from airports to prevent disruptions.

According to the letter, “Multiple modern safety systems on aircraft will be deemed unusable causing a much larger problem than what we knew… Airplane manufacturers have informed us that there are huge swaths of the operating fleet that may need to be indefinitely grounded.” So far, neither AT&T nor Verizon have commented on this.

iPhone SE With 5.7-inch Display Only Expected In 2023

At the moment, Apple’s iPhone SE series is based on the iPhone 8 in terms of design. This means that even in the display department, the current iPhone SE models feature a 4.7-inch display and that is expected to continue with the upcoming model slated for a March 2022 launch.

However, for those who want a larger iPhone SE model, you might have to wait until 2023 at the earliest. This is according to analyst Ross Young who believes that an iPhone SE with a 5.7-inch display (or larger) could only launch in 2023 at the earliest, or possibly even in 2024.

That being said, we believe that 2024 seems like a more likely candidate. This is because Apple’s iPhone SE releases so far haven’t exactly been very consistent. The first-gen iPhone SE was released in 2016 and the second-gen model was released in 2020, and now the upcoming third-gen model with support for 5G is only being launched two years later.

This means that unlike Apple’s flagship iPhones which are updated on an annual basis, there doesn’t appear to be any kind of fixed schedule that we know of when it comes to the iPhone SE, so 2024 feels like a more plausible timeframe. Either way, for iPhone SE hopefuls, it seems that you could either upgrade to this year’s model if you’re in dire need of a new phone, or hold out until 2023 or 2024 if you’d prefer a larger model.
