Ubisoft executive complains NFT critics just ‘don’t get it'

An Ubisoft executive has responded to the backlash against the company’s push to add NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to its games. In December, the publisher announced Quartz, an NFT platform that lets people buy and sell unique digital items, which it called Digits. Both employees and consumers criticized the move, with many expressing concern about the environmental impact of NFTs and one Ubisoft developer saying they’re “just another way to milk money.”

The backlash to Quartz was swift. Within 24 hours of Ubisoft heralding the platform in a YouTube trailer, more than 35,000 people had clicked the dislike button, with just over 1,300 liking it.

Ubisoft’s first foray into NFTs hasn’t exactly gone gangbusters. It gave away some to players who reached certain play time or experience levels in Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. It offered players the chance to buy some NFTs, but sales have reportedly been very sluggish. Someone who bought one, which is a gun skin with a small, unique serial number, told Waypoint that “it didn’t feel different from using any other cosmetic but the custom serial and ability to view it outside of the Ghost Recon experience really added a level of ownership that I appreciate.”

Nevertheless, Nicolas Pouard, vice president of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab, suggested that players simply aren’t understanding the utility of NFTs.

“I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them. For now, because of the current situation and context of NFTs, gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation,” Pouard told Finder. “But what we [at Ubisoft] are seeing first is the end game. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself. So, it’s really, for them. It’s really beneficial. But they don’t get it for now.”

Pouard also said that Ubisoft considered announcing Quartz without making any reference to the fact that Digits are actually NFTs, but decided against it as players would have recognized what was going on anyway. “So, we decided it would not be very smart to try to hide it,” he said. “Our principle is to build a safe place and safe environment with Quartz. So, we need to be transparent on what we are doing.”

NFTs are essentially a certificate of authenticity designed to live on the blockchain. The idea is that an NFT is a public record of ownership of a digital asset. In reality, it’s a verified link to a file somewhere on the internet that the owner of the URL destination can alter or even delete.

Along with claims that they can be tantamount to a pyramid scheme, many critics have expressed concern about the environmental impact of NFTs. An artist who sold an NFT collection last year said the process used up more than 8,000 kWh of electricity, which is more than his studio’s power consumption from the previous two years.

Ubisoft says that the Tezos system it opted for requires less power consumption than other blockchains. It claims a Digits transaction uses around as much energy as 30 seconds of video streaming. In any case, Quartz doesn’t seem to offer anything different than say, the Steam marketplace, which has long allowed players to buy and sell virtual goods for real money without the downsides of NFTs.

Porsche Taycan EV Sets Record For Cross-Country Charging Time

Modern day electric cars have much better batteries and range compared to the earlier days of the technology. However, this doesn’t mean that range anxiety is no longer a thing because let’s face it, charging up an EV to full is definitely going to take much longer than refueling a gas-powered car.

However, Porsche’s Taycan EV has managed to set a Guinness World Record for the shortest charging time to cross the United States with a charge time of just 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds. This beat the previous record held by Kia’s EV6 which took 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second to charge to complete the same journey.

The car was driven by Wayne Gerdes who is known for his efficient driving style called “hypermiling”, where various adjustments and driving techniques are used to try and maximize how much fuel a car uses. According to Gerdes, the Taycan EV was charged using Electrify America’s CCS DC fast charging network where the 350KW charger managed to juice the car from 6% up to 82% in a whopping 22 minutes.

If anything, this proves that thanks to faster charging technology, electric car owners don’t have to worry about parking in one spot for too long to charge their vehicles before continuing on their journey.

iOS 15.4 Will Let All Apps Use The iPhone 13’s 120Hz Display

One of the features of Apple’s higher-end iPhone 13 models is that it comes with a 120Hz ProMotion display. However, due to some weird bug, third-party app animations were locked to 60Hz and could not take full advantage of the higher refresh rate, which is kind of a pity as some customers obviously spent more money to get the higher-end Pro models.

Back then when it was first reported, Apple claimed that this was due to a Core Animation bug that would be addressed in a future update. The good news is that it looks like the problem has since been fixed, according to developer Christian Selig who says they were told by someone at Apple that the problem has now been resolved.

This is in the iOS 15.4 beta where it appears that third-party app animations will now be able to take full advantage of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max’s 120Hz ProMotion display. This means that once this update has been pushed out to users, the animation from third-party apps should not be any different from those found in Apple’s own first-party apps, thus creating a more unified experience.

We’re not sure what took Apple this long to fix the problem, but we suppose it’s better late than never. There is still no word on when iOS 15.4 will be released to the public, but as it is available in beta, we are one step closer to its final release.

Apple’s Subscription Services Is Inching Closer To 1 Billion Subscribers

A few years ago, Apple indicated that they believed that subscriptions is the way forwards in terms of service offerings and even apps. It turns out that Apple’s decision to make a bigger push towards subscriptions is paying off in a huge way because during the company’s Q1 2022 earnings report, they announced that they managed to add 165 million paid subscribers over the last year.

This means that the total number of subscribers the company has at the moment is sitting at 785 million, which is pretty crazy when you think about it and how much money the company is generating every month from these subscriptions alone.

According to Apple CFO Luca Maestri, “Also paid subscriptions continue to show very strong growth. We now have more than 785,000,000 paid subscriptions across the services on our platform, which is 165,000,000 during the last twelve months alone. And finally we’re adding new services that we think our customers will love and we continue to improve the breadth and quality of our current service offerings.”

Apple currently has several subscriptions that users can subscribe to on a monthly basis. There is iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+, and Apple One which bundles various services together.

Riding along in Ford’s F-150 Lightning

Ahead of being able to actually drive it, Ford offered us a chance to check out a prototype of the fleet version of the upcoming F-150 Lightning.
