The Global Chip Shortage Is Now Affecting Printer Ink Cartridges

Did you know that your printer ink cartridges actually come with chips inside of them? These cartridges do more than just hold your printer ink, and the chips inside of them are used for authentication purposes to help verify they are genuine components, and also used to help the printer know how much ink is left.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing global chip shortage, it appears that this has now affected printer ink cartridges as well. In an announcement on Canon Australia’s website, the company has revealed that due to the shortage, they will now be manufacturing chip-less toner cartridges.

According to Canon’s announcement, “To ensure our customers don’t miss a print, Canon has innovated around the chip shortage to ensure that we can still supply the toner cartridges. Canon has started to manufacture chip-less toner cartridges. While there will be some inevitable, yet minor, changes to our customers’ experience, you will still be able to print as normal.”

Canon states that this will only be a temporary solution until chip production can get back on track. However, in the meantime to deal with error messages that users will encounter when they try to use these chip-less cartridges, Canon has posted a guide on its website that shows users how to work around it for the time-being.

iPod Shuffle Is Popular Again Thanks To TikTokers

With smartphones now being able to play music, the need for dedicated music players has declined, save for those in the audiophile community who still use specific brands and models that can support lossless audio playback. Even Apple’s famed iPod no longer has a home in the company’s website’s navigation bar.

However, thanks to TikTokers, it seems that the iPod Shuffle is experiencing a new surge in popularity, specifically the second-gen model that came in bright and fun colors. However, these TikTokers aren’t necessarily using these iPods the way Apple intended, but rather as fashion accessories where many are finding them to be actually pretty good hair clips.

That being said, we doubt that this surge in popularity will make Apple reconsider bringing it back. It should be noted that the iPod Shuffle was officially discontinued back in 2017 and that at the moment, the only iPod that Apple is still selling is the iPod Touch which users need to specifically search for.

The iPod Shuffle lasted a grand total of four generations and over the years, we’ve seen various iterations of the iPod series, including the Nano, Mini, Classic, and Touch. So if you happen to have an old iPod Shuffle lying around and you typically wear hair clips, maybe this could be a new fashion accessory worth trying out.

Apple Reportedly Showed Its Car Schematics To An Auto Parts Maker In 2020

If Apple is expected to launch its own electric car in the near future, it is obvious that the company would already need to be sourcing parts or looking for companies to make the components it needs for the car. This is why a report from Nikkei Asia that revealed that Apple had apparently shown off its schematics to a parts maker in 2020 doesn’t come as a surprise.

According to the report, it seems that a person who identified himself as an Apple parts manager reached out to Japanese auto supplier Sanden, telling them that Apple wanted to make electric vehicles. That person then went on to show Sanden the alleged schematics of the car, including the parts needed for the air conditioning of the vehicle.

For those unfamiliar, Sanden is one of the biggest manufacturers for air conditioner parts for cars, so it’s not surprising that Apple would reach out to them. The report goes on to claim that both companies then went on to discuss specific requirements for the parts. Unfortunately, it seems that Sanden won’t be providing the parts to Apple.

Due to the pandemic, Sanden filed for debt restructuring in June 2020 and the talks with Apple eventually stopped. There have been rumors suggesting that Apple had previously reached out to various carmakers to help them make their car, but to date we still have no idea who it will be.

Apple Doesn’t Want To Create Its Own Metaverse

Companies like Meta (formerly known as Facebook) have envisioned a metaverse future where we would live in virtual worlds through virtual/augmented reality devices. With the pandemic showing that working and even studying from home is possible, the idea that we could meet colleagues or fellow students in a virtual world and “interact” with each other doesn’t seem like a far-fetched idea.

However, it seems that not all companies are necessarily eager to embrace the metaverse concept, and Apple is apparently one of them. According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, the journalist claims that Apple had apparently ruled out the possibility of creating their own metaverse.

The company has been rumored to be developing its own mixed reality device, so naturally some have wondered if Apple could head down the same path as Meta. However, based on Gurman’s report, the idea is “off limits” and that Apple sees its mixed reality devices more for use on short stints of communication, content viewing, and gaming, meaning they do not expect us to “live” in them.

Whether or not Apple’s strategy will prevail over that of Meta’s remains to be seen since we are still very much in the infancy of the tech and concept. It is possible that Apple’s strategy could pay off in the short-term, but in the long-term, who knows, maybe the metaverse could indeed become our new reality.

Apple Watch Glucose And Blood Pressure Sensors Probably Not Arriving Anytime Soon

For years, it has been suggested that Apple could be working on a way for the Apple Watch to measure the glucose levels of the wearer in a noninvasive manner. We have also heard talks about Apple possibly introducing a blood pressure sensor as well. While those features are still a possibility, we probably shouldn’t expect them anytime soon.

This is according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, where in his latest Power On newsletter, he claims that these are features that we probably shouldn’t expect anytime soon. According to Gurman, he says that he wouldn’t be surprised if glucose monitoring would only arrive in the second half of the decade, meaning that 2025 will be the earliest.

The same is also being said of the blood pressure monitor, where Gurman expects it to only arrive in the next 2-3 years at least. That being said, other companies such as Samsung have already introduced blood pressure monitoring with their latest smartwatches. However, the downside is that it will require users to constantly calibrate it with an actual blood pressure monitor, so perhaps Apple’s solution would not require that.

In any case, for those hoping to see these features in the Apple Watch Series 8, don’t hold your breath. If anything, the Series 8 will probably come with a brand new design but what other features we can expect remains to be seen.
