Key M1 Engineer Just Left Apple For Intel

With all the rave reviews that Apple’s M1 series of chipsets have been receiving, some have suggested that Apple made the right decision in ditching Intel. However, it seems that Intel could soon have the resources to catchup because it looks like the key engineer for the M1 chipset, Jeff Wilcox, has left Apple for Intel.

This is according to an announcement by Wilcox on his LinkedIn page in which he will be taking up a new position at Intel as an Intel Fellow and will be the Design Engineering Group’s CTO. Prior to this, Wilcox had worked as the Director of Mac Systems Architecture at Apple for the past 8 years.

He helped to oversee system architecture, signal integrity, and power integrity, and was also instrumental in helping Apple transition over to Apple Silicon. While it sounds like Intel might have poached Wilcox, it should be noted that prior to working at Apple, Wilcox actually worked at Intel first and had a short stint at NVIDIA, so if anything, it seems like Wilcox is more like returning to Intel.

Whether or not Wilcox’s departure will have any negative impact on the future development of the Apple Silicon remains to be seen, but presumably Apple already has plans in place to deal with employees leaving.

The Eargo 6 Are Hearing Aids That Can Automatically Adjust Itself

For those who might be hearing impaired, there is a good chance that some of you might already be using hearing aids. However, depending on the model that you’ve chosen, it might be a bit difficult to try and use your hearing aid in all sorts of environments because some places might be louder than others.

However, at CES 2022, Eargo has taken the wraps off its sixth iteration of its hearing aids which they’re calling the Eargo 6. One of the main features of the hearing aid is called Sound Adjust. This is a feature that can automatically identify your environment using an algorithm, and can then adjust the hearing aid’s settings to best suit your needs.

Eargo is no stranger to customized hearing profiles. With the Eargo 5, the company had a Sound Match feature that can create customized profiles, but the problem is that it was sort of like a manual tuning process which takes about 8-10 minutes to complete, and required users to place their hearing aids in its charger.

This is hardly ideal, especially if you’re outside, but with the Eargo 6’s Sound Adjust feature, all of it can be done automatically. That being said, users will have to pay a premium for the latest model because they do not come cheap at $2,950 for a pair. It does come with a 45-day trial period and financing, and customers will also receive lifetime support.

BMW Wants To Put A 31-inch Display In Your Car’s Backseat

There are cars out there that come with displays in the backseat. These are designed to help keep passengers who are seated in the back entertained, such as kids, who might want to watch their cartoons and shows during the drive. It’s also a useful way for parents to make sure their kids keep quiet and don’t move around too much.

However, these displays are usually pretty small, which is why BMW is hoping to shake things up with what they’re calling the Theatre Screen. This comes in the form of a massive 31-inch display that will support resolutions up to 8K. This would essentially almost span the entire width of the car.

This is essentially like a TV of sorts, or rather a smart TV because according to BMW, they will be equipping it with Amazon’s Fire TV services which means that users will be able to enjoy the features that would normally be associated with Fire TV. This includes movies and TV shows that they can purchase or stream.

According to Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG Development, “We develop immersive, digital experiences for sheer driving pleasure. In Theatre Mode, the rear of the interior is transformed into a private cinema lounge. With the 31 inch display, 5G connectivity, 8K resolution, surround sound and individual streaming program, an unprecedented experience is created that sets new standards for in-car entertainment.”

The company does not mention if or when such display options will be available in its cars, but if you ever wanted to have a movie experience in your car, short of going to a drive-in cinema, this could be the next best thing.

Eufy’s New Video Doorbell Helps You Keep An Eye On Your Parcels

Video doorbells are very useful if you want to know who’s at your door, even if you’re not home. However, they don’t always do a good job at keeping an eye on your packages where if they’re left on the porch, it could result in it being stolen by porch pirates.

However, Eufy is hoping to solve that problem because at CES 2022, the company has unveiled the Eufy Security Video Doorbell Dual. As you can see from the photo above and judging by its name, this is a video doorbell that actually comes with dual cameras.

One of the cameras will be pointed towards the body of the person at the door, giving users the ability to see who’s walking up to their door, while the second camera is angled downwards so that it can be used to keep an eye on your packages when they are delivered to your doorstep. However, one potential pitfall is that if the delivery person places it somewhere else, like to the side, then you won’t be able to see itt.

According to Eufy, both cameras will offer 2K resolution and with the downward facing camera, it offers up a 120-degree field of view which should hopefully be enough for you to watch over your parcels. It also uses AI to detect packages and also family members and friends. The camera is powered by batteries which makes it easy to install, and Eufy claims it should last up to six months on a single charge.

If you’re keen on Eufy’s new video doorbell, it will be priced at $260 and is expected to be available this February.

Meta sued for alleged role in extremist-linked murder of federal guard

The surviving sister of Dave Patrick Underwood, a federal security guard who was killed in a drive-by shooting in 2020, has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent organization of Facebook. The suit seeks to hold the company accountable for connecting the two men charged in the murder plot and giving them a space online to plan the attack.

Underwood was shot outside a federal building in Oakland, California in May of 2020. The two men charged inn the case were later linked to so-called “boogaloo” anti-government movement, which Facebook banned from its platform in June of 2020 citing the group’s history of “actively promoting violence against civilians, law enforcement and government officials and institutions.”

“The shooting was not a random act of violence,” the lawsuit states. “It was the culmination of an extremist plot hatched and planned on Facebook by two men who Meta connected through Facebook’s groups infrastructure and its use of algorithms designed and intended to increase user engagement and, correspondingly, Meta’s profits.” The lawsuit alleges the two men would never have met if not for Facebook’s recommendations, which pushed them both to join groups that “openly advocated for violence.”

A spokesperson for Meta said in a statement to The New York Times that the “claims are without legal basis,” and pointed to the company’s work to ban “militarized social movements.”

The lawsuit is hardly the first time Meta has been implicated over its role in fueling extremism and violence. Facebook’s own researchers warned that group recommendations were pushing users toward extremism in 2016, according to internal company documents first reported by The Wall Street Journal. And documents from whistleblower Frances Haugen have raised questions about Facebook’s role in inciting violence around the world. Meta was also recently sued by a group of Rohingya refugees over Facebook’s role in amplifying hate speech that incited a genocide in the country.

In a statement to ABC, Ted Leopold, who is representing Underwood’s sister, referenced Haugen’s disclosures about Facebook. “We believe and intend to show that Facebook’s conduct has led to a rise in extremism throughout the world and acts of real-world violence, including the murder of Officer Underwood,” Leopold said.

Spotify Makes Podcast Ads Unskippable by Sticking Them in the App

Those of us who are serial podcast listeners know how the ad drill goes. A short audio clip will pop up right before, during, or after your show to tell you about a revolutionary product, service, or sale. Some of you might skip through a particularly long ad, or just speed through all ads. However, it’s not going to…

Goodyear Puts Its Airless Tires On Delivery Robots

The tires on our vehicles have improved over the years. Some of them even have the ability to inflate themselves should they ever go flat, giving drivers a chance to drive themselves to somewhere safe or to a mechanic to get the tire fixed or get a new tire without damaging their car’s rims.

However, wouldn’t it be much better if tires did not even rely on air at all? That’s something that Goodyear has developed which they are now testing out on a fleet of delivery robots. These tires are being used by Starship Technologies’ delivery robots, where the company had requested that they wanted to be able to extend the tire life of its robots and reducing its maintenance.

This makes a lot of sense, especially since these delivery robots are designed to be autonomous, so having tires that won’t get a flat like regular air-based tires could go a long way in ensuring they can operate more efficiently and reduce their chances of breaking down midway through a delivery.

Goodyear isn’t the only tire company to have developed airless tires. Several years ago, Michelin had also developed their own airless tires together with General Motors, which last we heard was being planned for 2024.
