HTC Vive reveals a VR wrist tracker for the Focus 3 headset

HTC Vive has revealed a wrist tracker for its Focus 3 headset. The device is 85 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than the Vive Focus 3 controller.

The brand says the wearable can track your arm from fingertips to elbow. The Focus 3’s cameras can monitor LEDs for standalone tracking. As such, attaching the Wrist Tracker to an object allows the headset to track it with six degrees of freedom.

With the help of high-frequency IMU (inertial measurement unit) data and an advanced kinematic model, Focus 3 will still know the exact position of your hand and wrist when the tracker isn’t in the cameras’ line of sight. It can predict your pose too, so if you, for instance, reach behind your head with a tennis racket to play a smash shot, the headset should still have a good idea of what you’re doing.

The Vive Wrist Tracker will be released in early 2022, starting in the US. It costs $129/€129/£119. HTC Vive also revealed new accessories for the Focus 3, including a multi battery charger and charging case, in part to reduce downtime between sessions.

32ºN Sunglasses Can Adapt To Your Prescription Needs With A Single Swipe

The problem with owning a pair of prescription glasses is that it makes it difficult to own a pair of sunglasses. This is because you would need to buy a pair of sunglasses that also has prescription lenses, and you would need to carry around an additional pair of glasses when you want to switch back and forth.

This can be rather annoying, but that’s a problem that 32ºN (pronounced 32 North) is trying to solve with its adaptive sunglasses. The sunglasses feature the use of the company’s patented Liquid Crystal lenses that can switch from sunglasses to regular reading glasses with a single swipe.

It also comes with an accompanying smartphone app that lets you add your own prescription. This means that if you need to read something upclose, like a menu or a book, you won’t need to take off the glasses and switch to your reading glasses to do so.

According to the company, “The 32°N Sunglasses uses liquid crystal layers split into tiny pixels that accustom to the eyes’ needs at any given time. The glasses provide an effective solution for those who suffer from Presbyopia, impeding the need to constantly change between sunglasses and reading glasses outdoors.”

It’s a very interesting idea and useful one, but how effective or practical it is remains to be seen, but if you’re interested, the company is accepting pre-orders on its website where you can nab yourself a pair for $499.

Pebble Feel Is A Device That Lets You Experience Hot And Cold While In VR

Virtual reality (VR) is supposed to offer users an immersive experience by essentially shutting users out of the real world through the use of a headset. However, it’s not quite the complete experience because while you might feel like you’re in another world, you can’t exactly touch or feel what you’re seeing.

However, Shiftall has taken the wraps off an interesting gadget called the Pebble Feel that will apparently allow users to feel both hot or cold while they are in a VR simulation. It’s actually quite a simple idea where it features a plate integrated into a body harness that can either heat up or cool down, thus allowing users to feel changes in temperature while they’re in VR.

According to the company, “The Pebble Feel is a VR experience that allows you to “go to that area and feel hot (or cold)” by simply customizing the world of your VR metaverse, such as VRChat or NeosVR. This is a device. The temperature can be freely controlled between 9°C(48°F) to 42°C(107°F) in 25℃(77°F) environment, and when you design your VR world, just embed the temperature information according to the virtual location.”

It’s quite a novel idea although we’re not sure how well it actually works or how much more of an immersive experience it can be, but it’s interesting nonetheless. It also has some practical benefits where during the summer, it might be able to be used to cool you down, or during the winter where it can help keep you warm.
