Google Fiber workers in Kansas City make a bid to unionize

A supermajority of customer service representatives for Google Fiber, operating out of a store in Kansas City, Missouri, have signed union cards in the hopes of bargaining their first contract with their bosses. They’re organizing under the auspices of the Alphabet Workers Union, a year-old division of the Communication Workers of America which is seeking to represent employees and contractors at all level of Google’s parent company.

The 11 workers — 10 of whom have signed cards since the union drive began in October — are jointly employed by Google and a staffing agency called BDS Connected Solutions. That’s not out of the ordinary, as staffing arrangements with Alphabet go: a 2019 story in the New York Times found temps and contractors made up the majority of the tech giant’s workforce, while a Recodereport that same year indicated that this second class of laborers earned significantly less than Google’s own full-time employees. According to two BDS workers who spoke to Engadget, customer representatives had been feeling left out of key conversations about staffing and safety protocols, and communication with management has deteriorated.

“We started off by just asking, ‘Hey, how do you feel about this idea? Do you feel like you have enough say, in the conditions that you work in?’ We basically received a unanimous ‘No, I don’t feel like we do,'” Emrys Adair told Engadget. “It hasn’t always been like this,” Mike Knox, who has been a Google Fiber representative for several years, said “the general relationship between management and the workers. It used to be closer.” Kansas City was the very first market Google Fiber launched in, nearly a decade ago.

What makes this push to form a bargaining unit somewhat unusual, however, has been the decision to skip straight to petitioning the National Labor Relations Board. Typically, this is the longer, more arduous option when an employer refuses to voluntarily recognize a union. But, according to Adair, Alphabet and BDS have neither attempted to quash the union drive, nor expressed a willingness to recognize it.”There’s been no acknowledgement, no pushback. no response at all yet,” they said. Google and BDS have not responded to requests for comment from Engadget.

Like many workplaces in recent years, these service representatives have cycled through closures, reduced hours and the occasional need to isolate and work remotely when a colleague tests positive for COVID-19. While they weren’t keen to give too many specifics as to what they’d hope to secure in a first contract, one of the benefits they’re seeking to obtain is hazard pay. “As far as the actual COVID precautions go, they’ve done a pretty alright, job,” Adair said. “Our main concern is just that we’re still working in the store in person in a pandemic, which in and of itself, no matter how you do that is a risk.”

It may be months or years before the NLRB makes a ruling on these workers’ right to form a bargaining unit. In the meantime, Knox hopes it might spur action from others within Google Fiber. “We’re really hoping that this inspires in that regard,” he said. “We’re hoping that’s a flashpoint where other people can see that and decide to push for more input.”

LG’s UltraGear 17G90Q Is The Company’s First Ever Gaming Laptop

LG is no stranger when it comes to laptops. At CES every year, the company almost always showcases its new LG Gram series of laptops, but this year, it seems that LG is heading down a slightly different path with its laptops as they have unveiled the LG ULtraGear 17G90Q, the company’s first ever gaming laptop.

If you’ve ever browsed LG’s gaming monitors before, then you are probably familiar with their use of the UltraGear branding. With the 17G90Q, the laptop will feature the use of a 17.3-inch WQXGA IPS display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and a resolution of 2560×1600, and it will also support a refresh rate of up to 300Hz, which is pretty insane since even regular desktop monitors don’t typically go that high.

Oddly enough, under the hood LG will be using an Intel 11th Gen Tiger Lake H Core processor, which like we said is an odd choice since Intel recently announced its 12th Gen series for laptops. As for GPUs, the laptop will be featuring NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q, and will support up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD storage.

The LG UltraGear 17G90Q will also come with a vapor chamber cooling system, a built-in fingerprint scanner, WiFi 6E support, and a host of ports ranging from USB-A to USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and a headphone jack. There is no mention of pricing yet but it is expected to be available in the US and South Korea in the early part of 2022.

BMW Shows Off A Color-Changing Car At CES 2022

Trying to choose a color for your car can be a bit difficult. This is because there are things to consider apart from your personal preference. For example, cars in black might not be the best idea in countries that are hot all year round, while cars that have more funky colors might be harder to sell off.

That being said, if you can’t decide what color you want, then BMW might have something for you. At CES 2022, the company has unveiled the BMW iX Flow. This is a concept vehicle by BMW that features an e-ink exterior that can actually change color from black to white and vice versa at a touch of a button.

For those unfamiliar, e-ink is the same display technology that you would typically find in e-readers. This is because compared to more traditional displays, they are relatively low-energy, which is one of the reasons why BMW chose to use it. According to BMW, the iX Flow will feature 500 horsepower and has a range of 300 miles.

According to Stella Clarke, head of project for the BMW iX Flow, “This gives the driver the freedom to express different facets of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly, and to redefine this each time they sit into their car. Similar to fashion or the status ads on social media channels, the vehicle then becomes an expression of different moods and circumstances in daily life.”

Some manufacturers like Samsung, Motorola, and Huawei have even taken that literally with their own systems for turning their smartphones into desktops. Strangely enough, these companies didn’t try building a hardware and software ecosystem around these features, which could have made it easier for users to … Continue reading

BMW will use Amazon's Fire TV to power an 8K backseat 'Theatre Screen'

Never mind cars that coddle drivers — BMW wants to give rear seat passengers the deluxe treatment. It’s previewing a 31-inch, 8K “Theatre Screen” passenger option based on Fire TV for cars. Cue it up and the 32:9 screen will extend from the headliner, complete with 5G data and Bowers & Wilkins surround sound. You’ll even watch the sunblinds close and listen to an opening theme from soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer.

Content from Amazon’s platform will ‘only’ play in 4K, and few videos will make full use of the ultrawide 32:9 aspect ratio. You can tilt the screen for an ideal view, though, and two rear passengers can control the volume and the rest of the entertainment system.

BMW didn’t say which vehicles would include Theatre Screen beyond “future” models, but you’ll access it as part of the My Modes feature that debuted in the iX. The price and availability also weren’t available, although you can presume this will get expensive. Not that cost is necessarily a concern for the target audience — this may be as much for chauffeured customers as it is parents hoping to spoil their kids during road trips.

GM Unveils The Chevrolet Silverado EV Work Truck

2024 Silverado EV RST

While a lot of the electric vehicles we are seeing today come in the form of cars, for those who prefer a truck for work or for practicality reasons, you might be interested to learn that during GM’s keynote address at CES 2022, the company has unveiled the Chevrolet Silverado EV work truck.

According to the company, the Silverado EV will be offered in two versions – the Work Truck (WT) model and the more expensive luxurious RST model. However, at its core, both models have an estimated 400 mile range when fully charged, and both will also support DC fast charging of up to 350kW, giving it 100 miles with a 10 minute charge.

2024 Silverado EV RST

The main difference would be that the RST model will have up to 664 horsepower with more than 780lb-ft of torque when the Wide Open Watts Mode has been activated. According to GM, this will result in the truck being able to hit 0-60mph in just 4.5 seconds. Other features of the Silverado EV also include hands-free highway driving, four-wheel steer, and 24-inch wheels.

2024 Silverado EV WT

It is clear that GM is hoping to compete with Ford on this front as the Silverado EV (WT) will be priced starting at $39,900, which is similar to Ford’s F-150 Lightning which is priced starting at $39,974. The Silverado EV (RST) limited edition first model will go on sale for $105,000 next fall.

According to GM CEO Mary Barra, “It will offer a revolutionary mix of capability, performance, safety, flexibility and design that catapults this electric truck for both fleet and retail customers into a category of its own.”

Razer’s Project Sophia Is A Desk That’s Also A Modular PC

The problem with building a PC is that while it’s relatively easy for users to build it from scratch or upgrade certain parts where necessary, for the less tech savvy, it can feel daunting with all the wires and not being sure which goes into which and so on.

Razer has long championed the idea of modular PC design, dating back to 2014 with Project Christine. Now at CES 2022, 8 years later, Razer is back with yet another modular PC concept called Project Sophia. However, unlike Christine, Sophia combines both a desk and a modular PC setup together.

According to Razer’s vision, the table will feature cutouts for slots of different PC components that can be attached and detached magnetically. There will be different modules and parts that users will be able to choose from, thus allowing them to not just build their PC of their dreams, but also the setup of their dreams.

The desk itself will also feature a massive 65-inch or 77-inch OLED display, meaning that there is no need for additional external peripherals. That being said, before you get too excited, keep in mind that similar to Project Christine or even Project Valerie (a triple screen laptop), this is just a concept which means we have no idea if Razer plans to make it a reality.

Plus, as one of the issues highlighted by Razer for Project Christine, making this a reality would require that PC part makers agree to make components that work the way Razer intends, which is admittedly a bit of a tall order. However, it still makes for a pretty cool idea nonetheless.
