Volvo will debut its 'self-driving' Ride Pilot feature in California

Volvo will debut “Ride Pilot,” its take on a Tesla-like autonomous driving feature, in California, the automaker announced on Wednesday during CES 2022. Once it’s approved for use on highways, Volvo says it will offer Ride Pilot as a paid subscription add-on for a new electric SUV it plans to reveal later this year. It will later bring the feature to other markets globally.

The company worked with Zenseact and LiDAR developer Luminar to create Ride Pilot, and it’s currently testing the feature in Sweden. As you might guess from Luminar’s involvement, Ride Pilot will utilize LiDAR technology, an approach that puts Volvo at odds with Tesla. CEO Elon Musk famously called a “crutch” during a 2018 earnings call. According to Volvo, Ride Pilot will utilize a Luminar LiDAR sensor complemented by eight cameras, 16 ultrasonic sensors and five radars to enable the software to judge depth. In combination

“When we say self-driving, we mean self-driving. So this will be a feature or function where the car is actually responsible for the driving so you will not need to keep your hands on the steering wheel and you will not need to keep your eyes off the road,” said Martin Kristensson, head of AD and mobility at Volvo.

Star Wars Meets Mr. Potato Head with The Yamdalorian and The Tot Playset

Any toy with a Mandalorian theme is going to make money. That’s just basic Star Wars economics. So to easily fatten both Disney’s and Hasbro’s pockets comes this Star Wars Potato Head The Yamdalorian and the Tot playset. It features a basic Potato Head body and 13 accessories to dress up like everyone’s favorite Grogu-protecting bounty hunter. Even I just ordered two despite my doctor having me on a strict no-starch diet.

Available for pre-order from Entertainment Earth for a relatively reasonable $16, the Spudalorian is going to look great on the display shelf with the rest of my Star Wars memorabilia. Do they still make Potato Heads with the butt storage compartment for storing all their accessories? Because I’d hate to lose baby Yoda to one of my cats.

So, are these going to be next year’s must-have Christmas toy, or is the storage unit I have full of them to resell on eBay just going to go to waste? I suppose only time will tell, but if time tells the same story it has in the past, this will be just like the time I invested in Enron.

Lenovo Refreshes ThinkPad X1 Series at CES

CES is the traditional time at which Lenovo resets a significant portion of its portfolio, and that’s the case again this year. The ThinkPad X1 series is one of the most popular, so we pay particular attention to it, and this update is worth a look.

First, Lenovo is upgrading upcoming ThinkPad X1 laptops to Intel’s new 12th generation “Alder Lake” Core processors (and chipsets) for mobile. We’ve previously talked about the Alder Lake architecture and reviewed the desktop CPUs.

Some Intel Gen 12 mobile CPUs were just launched at CES and will carry all the advantages induced by Intel’s latest architecture, including performance, but more importantly, power efficiency. That means potentially much better battery life, and we expect reviews to demonstrate it later this year.

The X1 Carbon 10th Gen, X1 Yoga 7th Gen and X1 Nano 2nd Gen are all getting new Intel processors, which is pretty exciting since they showed outstanding performance in 2021. If you’re not familiar with these excellent designs, read our ThinkPad X1 Carbon 9th Gen review, X1 Yoga 6th Gen review, and X1 nano 1st Gen review.

These new X1 laptops will feature Intel’s Core P-Series and U-Series, which are lower-power processors than the H-Series fully launched at CES 2022.

CPU aside, another aspect of the system update is the arrival of DDR5 high-performance memory and PCIe Gen 4. Both can bring substantial performance to memory and storage workloads.

Looking at the technical specifications, I like the 3K and 4K OLED display options. Many IPS LCDs are excellent, but when it comes to entertainment image quality, OLED is almost always the best option.

At the top of the display, Lenovo uses a new camera module with a higher-performance camera sensor. The 1.4-micron sensor pixel size is exciting as it might bring smartphone selfie quality to the laptop market. Lenovo had committed to having better video communications, and this is happening.

Talking about the camera, Lenovo’s ThinkShield security platform includes a Human Presence Detection that can spot if you’ve left to lock the laptop. Also, you can be alerted if someone peeks at your screen from behind. It is also intelligent enough to dim the screen if you’re looking away to save energy.

There are 4G CAT16 or 5G Sub-6 connectivity options for the road warriors. If you use a portable WiFi hotspot, I’d recommend having integrated communications because they tend to work a lot better, and you won’t have to manage, carry and charge your hotspot.

We’re looking forward to experiencing these next-gen ThinkPad X1s in the real world. According to Lenovo, the new X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga will arrive around March with starting prices of $1639 and $1749, respectively. The new X1 Nano is expected to ship in April at a $1659 starting price.

Amazon Fire TV is coming to Ford SUVs in 2022

You won’t need a Jeep to try Fire TV in your car. Amazon has revealed Fire TV is coming to more vehicles this year, including 2022 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Navigator SUVs. More of Stellantis’ cars will also have the feature, too, including the Chrysler Pacifica and Jeep Grand Cherokee. The company didn’t provide timelines for when the interface would be available.

Fire TV in cars is, effectively, a small-scale version of what you might be used to at home: passengers can watch videos, run apps and use Alexa, just with an interface optimized for seatback screens. You can save some content for offline access if you’re driving through areas where internet access is spotty. The version currently in the Jeep Wagoneer includes a remote that also controls some car functions, but it’s not clear if that will carry over to Ford vehicles.

Amazon clearly sees in-car Fire TV as a way to keep users in its ecosystem when they’re away from home. However, it should still be helpful for entertaining kids on long trips, or simply for catching up on shows while you’re in the passenger seat.
