Qualcomm Working With Microsoft On Custom Chip For AR Glasses

We know that Microsoft is interested in wearable headsets. After all, the company developed the HoloLens mixed reality headset. However, with the rumors that Apple could be looking to enter the space, it seems that Microsoft and Qualcomm have decided to team up.

In an announcement during Qualcomm’s CES 2022 keynote address, the company revealed that they will be working with Microsoft in developing a custom chipset that could be used to power future AR glasses.

According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, “We’re announcing that we’re developing a custom augmented reality Snapdragon chip for next-generation, power-efficient, very lightweight AR glasses for the Microsoft ecosystem, and we’re integrating into that chip platform software from both companies: the Microsoft Mesh platform, and the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon Spaces XR development platform.”

This is not the first time that Microsoft and Qualcomm have worked together. Previously, Microsoft had worked with Qualcomm which resulted in the SQ1 chipset that was used in the Surface Pro X.

There is no word on when this headset is expected to be launched, but if the rumors are true and Apple is working on their own headset, it will be interesting to see how Qualcomm’s chipsets will hold up against Apple’s own hardware.

Targus Cypress Hero EcoSmart Backpack Will Use Apple’s Find My Network

One of the advantages of buying into Apple’s ecosystem is that you get to take advantage of the company’s Find My network. This is basically a feature that lets you locate missing devices like AirPods, iPhones, iPads, and so on. Apple even released the AirTag, a tracking accessory that you can attach to non-Apple devices, such as backpacks.

However, if you don’t want to get the AirTag but would love to track your backpack in case it gets lost or stolen, Targus has got your back (pun intended). The company has recently unveiled the Cypress Hero EcoSmart backpack that can actually take advantage of Apple’s Find My network thanks to its built-in tracker.

In a way, you could almost think of it as Targus building its own AirTag, except that the tracker is integrated into the backpack itself which makes it less obvious. The backpack has a built-in battery that can be replaced and recharged over USB, and as per its name, the backpack is made out of recycled materials, approximately 26 recycled water bottles according to the company.

The Targus Cypress Hero EcoSmart back is priced at $150 and the company intends to make it available for purchase in the Spring/Summer of 2022, so keep an eye out for it if you’re looking for a new backpack that offers tracking technology.

Astell & Kern’s Acro CA1000 Is Both A Music Player And Headphone Amp

Usually if you’re looking for a headphone amp, how it works is that the amp connects to your headphones, and the amp also then connects to your music source, whether it be your laptop, desktop, and so on. However, the folks over at Astell & Kern have unveiled a rather interesting gadget at CES 2022.

Dubbed the Acro CA1000, this is both a music player and headphone amp combined. This means that you can store your music in it and bring it with you, so the only thing you really only need to connect are your headphones.

What’s pretty cool about it is that it features a digital music player that’s actually integrated into the device itself. This music player is like one of those dedicated music players from the iPod days, except it will feature a 4.1-inch touchscreen display that you can lift up and place at an angle so you can easily browse your library of songs.

The Acro CA1000 comes with 256GB of onboard storage that can be expanded up to 1TB via microSD, and it also supports native DSD512 and 32bit/384 kHz playback, thanks to its Quad ES9068AS DAC. The unit also features a variety of headphone ports for various jack sizes, such as balanced 2.5mm and 4.4mm ports, and unbalanced 3.5mm and 6.35mm ports.

There will also be support for wireless connectivity where you can pair it with a phone via the BT Sink function. The Acro CA1000 comes with an 8,400mAh battery that is good for 10.5 hours, but it also supports wired use if you’re at home and don’t need the portability. The Acro CA1000 won’t come cheap though, with a price tag of a whopping $2,100 when it goes on sale this February.

Watch Intel's CES 2022 event in under 10 minutes

Intel debuted its new chips for laptops — and a handful of devices that use them — at this year’s CES. The chipmaker has announced that it’s bringing its hybrid 12th-gen CPUs to laptops a few months after they were introduced for desktop computers. These CPUs combine performance cores (P-cores) and efficient cores (E-cores) on a single chip to be able to better handle the demands of various real-world tasks. Their faster cores can power your game, for instance, while the slower cores are taking care of your livestreaming needs. They’ll top out at 14 cores for laptops, which include HP’s updated EliteBook and ZBooks, as well as MSI’s new Stealth GS77 and Stealth GS66 gaming laptops. Intel has also revealed that its 12th-gen KS-series chips for desktop, which are arriving this spring, will be able to reach 5.5GHz on a single core. Plus, it’s adding a foldable specification for its premium Evo PC line this year. You can watch a condensed version of the company’s CES event in our video above.

Kensington’s MagPro Elite Magnetic Privacy Screen Stops People From Peeking At Your Laptop

Working outside can be fun because it represents a change in environment. However, the problem with working outside in a public setting like a cafe or library is that you have strangers around you, some of whom might not be polite enough to ignore what you’re doing on your laptop.

Enter the Kensington MagPro Elite Magnetic Privacy Screen (that was a mouthful!). This is a magnetic privacy screen that has been designed for Apple’s new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops, and it even has a cutout for the notch in the laptops. The screen is said to help narrow field of view to 30 degrees, meaning that unless you’re facing your laptop directly, people to the sides won’t be able to see what’s on your display.

While privacy screens aren’t new, one of the advantages that Kensington has is that their screen uses magnets. This means that placing it on your laptop and taking it off when you’re at home is quick and simple and it doesn’t leave behind any residue. It is also thin enough where you can leave it on and close your laptop without any issues.

The screen is also reversible, where one side offers a glossy finish while the other side offers a matte finish, so depending on the environment and your preferences, you will be able to choose. If this sounds like something you might be able to use, it is priced at $65 and will be available for purchase from Kensington’s website.

The Samsung Freestyle Is A Projector With Smart TV Features

It would obviously be great if you could afford a massive TV in your living room, but maybe you can’t, or maybe you just don’t have the space for it. The next best thing would probably be a projector which gives you a bit more flexibility and freedom.

If that’s the direction that you’re headed, then you might be interested to learn that at CES 2022, Samsung has taken the wraps off a new projector that they are calling the Samsung Freestyle. This is not just any standard projector, but a smart one, which Samsung says combines a projector, a smart speaker, and even ambient lighting all rolled into a single device.

This means that if you’re familiar with Samsung’s smart TVs, then you should be familiar with the Freestyle, at least in terms of software. According to Samsung, the Freestyle projector can be powered using a standard USB-PD connection as long as it is 50W or higher. Unlike other projectors, the Freestyle has no built-in battery which means that it is designed to be used wired.

The projector is placed on a stand with a hinge that allows users to choose to either project the screen onto a wall or even a ceiling. There is support for auto keystone which means it can adjust the picture as necessary so you don’t get any distortion. According to Samsung, the Freestyle will be able to project up to 100-inches in screen size.

The Samsung Freestyle is currently available for pre-order via Samsung’s website where it is priced at $900.
