NPR's podcast push now includes subscriber-only bonus material

NPR’s podcast efforts have increasingly revolved around its paid, ad-free NPR+ service, and now it’s offering stronger incentives to spend money. Axiosreports the organization will offer content available solely to NPR+ subscribers. The new show The Limits with Jay Williams, for instance, will offer a separate content release in its feed. NPR VP Joel Sucherman also said NPR might test perks like unedited interviews and member-only events.

You’ll also have extra motivation to support local stations. NPR will launch a subscription podcast bundle in the second half of 2022 that gives station members wider access to an on-demand podcast library and other content. It’s similar to PBS Passport, Sucherman said. The company is also adding more shows to NPR+.

The public broadcaster isn’t ditching free, ad-supported podcasts any time soon. However, the shift isn’t surprising. Podcasts help bring in a younger, more diverse audience than conventional radio, Axios said. A subscription drive like this could maintain listenership and funding even if fewer people tune into live programming.

TikTok is testing a 'repost' button to share clips with friends

TikTok is testing a “repost” button in its app that allows users to quickly re-share a clip with their followers. The new feature, which the company described as an early test, isn’t available to everyone yet, though it appears to be cropping up for a number of users over the last several days.

“Currently, we’re experimenting with a new way for people to share TikTok videos they enjoy,” a TikTok spokesperson said in a statement. The feature appears as a yellow “repost” button alongside the app’s other sharing features. TechCrunchreports that reposting a clip won’t publish it to your profile, but it will push the video to the “For You” feeds of your friends. You can also add a brief comment that will appear with the clip so your friends can see “why you reposted this video.”

While TikTok has long been known for users endlessly remixing and re-sharing each other’s clips, the repost button is the first time the app has had something akin to a retweet – the ability to quickly re-share a video from your feed as is. As TechCrunch points out, TikTok may be treading carefully with the feature as making it too easy to recycle posts could pollute users’ “For You” feeds, which are known for being hyper-personalized.

That could be why the company is limiting the visibility of reposts to friends who follow each other, at least for now. Elsewhere, the company is looking into other ways of mixing up the types of videos people see in their recommendations, including limiting “clusters” of potentially problematic content.

BMW's iX M60 performance EV will arrive with 610 HP and a half century of M edition pedigree

Hot on the (w)heels of our October test drive with BMW’s iX, the luxury automaker has unveiled a more powerful — but equally-electrified — performance edition of the EV flagship at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, the new 2023 iX M60. Building on more than 50 years of design development with the automaker’s prestigious M line, the iX M60 (along with the upcoming i4 M50) mark BMW’s first forays into high-performance electric vehicles.

In addition to sporting 610 horsepower, the all-wheel drive iX M60 will offer 811 ft-lbs of torque, which translates into a 3.6 second 0-60 (not bad for a vehicle weighing 6,900 pounds), a top speed of 155 mph, and an estimated 280 mile range using the standard 21-inch wheels. It’s dual synchronous motors are current-energized, meaning that their rotational speed is based on the amount of electrical energy applied — rather than relying on permanent magnets to generate the magnetic field turns the wheels. According to BMW, this improves both the vehicle’s overall power density and its peak power output while eliminating the need for rare earth elements in the motors’ construction.

Its battery pack has a usable capacity of 106 kWh (111.5 kWh total). A full charge (0-100 percent capacity) on an 11W AC plug will take around 10.5 hours to complete (or a whopping 33 hours at 3.7 kW). Charging up to 80 percent on a DC fast charger will take 97 minutes at 50 kW, 40 minutes at 120 kW or just 35 minutes if you’re lucky enough to find a charging station outfitted with it a 250kW port (note that the M60’s 369V architecture limits its DC charging rate to 195 kW even if you do get lucky with an ultrafast station).

Outwardly, the M60 is quite similar to the iX. It measures 195 x 77 x 65 inches and incorporates an aluminum space frame and carbon cage with carbon fiber reinforced plastic in the roof, side and rear. But if you look closer, you’ll notice M60-exclusive blue brake calipers and optional 22-inch rims. Of the eight available exterior colors, Titanium Bronze is only available on the M60, as are the optional Titanium Bronze wheels.

On the interior, M60 drivers will have their pick of five seat color options (either using SensaTec material or perforated leather) as well as the regular set of features, gadgets and ADAS systems we’ve come to expect on luxury vehicles. That includes a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, a panoramic “Sky Lounge” LED roof, adaptive LED headlights and myriad driver and traffic monitoring sensors, and something called BMW Natural Interaction, which allows you to control the infotainment system with verbal commands and hand gestures.

Pricing for the M60 will start at $106,095 when the orders begin this June. BMW’s keynote is scheduled for 11am PT on Wednesday, January 5th so stay tuned for more breaking news about the iX M60 and the rest of BMW’s CES lineup.

These New Smart Bulbs Can Track Your Sleep

We’ve gotten accustomed to tracking sleep with smartwatches and fitness trackers, but wearing something on your wrist to bed can be annoying. Companies like Google have come up unique ways to track sleep using radar, and now smart bulb company Sengled is applying the same technology to its lights.

Intel Launches 12th Gen Core-H Series Laptop CPUs

After making a noticeable comeback on the Desktop PC processor front, Intel has fired a new salvo at CES 2022 by releasing its 12th generation Core processors for mobile.

The new CPUs feature up to 14 cores (6 “Performance” + 8 “Efficiency”), and if you haven’t done so yet, I encourage you to read our Intel Gen 12 “Alder Lake” architecture overview and the desktop CPUs review to have a good idea of what to expect. The overview also details many platform characteristics (bus, WIFI, etc) that mobile also benefit from.

In that review, I suspected that upcoming Intel Gen 12 laptop CPUs would reveal the true potential of the Alder Lake architecture because desktop peak performance doesn’t show the efficiency gains under their best light. Today, Intel has shared numbers indicating that these new mobile CPUs are doing very well, and I’m looking forward to testing them in upcoming laptops.

There are three distinct categories within the 12th gen mobile processors line up, categorized by the thermal envelope (TDP): 45W H-Series, 28W P-Series, and 15W/9W U-Series. They serve different laptops categories: Enthusiast, Performance thin & light, and modern thin & light. The higher the TDP, and the higher the peak performance.

Each category has a different mix of cores, voltage, and frequency to achieve the desired performance goal. Intel shows that its architecture can scale across all computing categories, which is precisely what the market needs.

CES 2022 marks the launch of the 45W processors, also called the Intel Gen 12 Core H-Series, and there are eight models across the Core i9, i7, and i5 variations. Note that OEMs can reduce the TDP to 35W or push it to 65W depending on the cooling system.

From a performance point of view, the i9-12900HK is the most impressive with its 14 cores, 20 threads, and 5Ghz maximum frequency. That model is what you’ll find in the best Intel-based gaming and workstation laptops from now on. Intel expects 100 laptop Core-H laptop designs to hit the market.

According to Intel’s data, this is the “fastest mobile processor ever,” and its peak performance is expected to dwarf the Apple M1 Max and the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX.

Intel claims the new Core i9-12900HK is 28% faster than the previous Core i9-11980HK CPU and that some games might see “up to 43% higher performance” between the new and old processors. Reviewers should be able to independently reach similar conclusions once the first laptops arrive, in February, according to Intel.
