TCL LEINIAO XR Glasses Concept Is Attractive

TCL rose as a display (TV) company, and as such, it’s not completely surprising to see it enter the eXtended Reality (XR) Glasses market. However, the prototype revealed at CES looks surprisingly good and attractive.

To be clear, only the industrial was revealed here at CES. TCL aims to show a working version at MWC in late February, and then we would be able to judge how good it really is.

The technological foundation of these glasses seems to be very close to products previously announced, such as the Oppo Air Glass. Similarities include using a tiny projector with Micro LED (waveguide display) and a Snapdragon 4100 chip.

We expect the display to have modest capabilities and could be used to display notifications, directions, and other simple “glance at” visual information. It’s not meant to replace much larger XR headsets often used by professionals (Microsoft’s Hololens) but push for a consumer-friendly XR usage model.

Assuming the display fulfills its role of displaying “holographic-style” pieces of information like a heads-up display would, the question is: how will apps use it? That is the million-dollar question that has yet to be answered, but the industry needs to start somewhere, and TCL’s device might be one of the foundational pieces that will make early users bite.

As Ubergizmo co-founder Eliane Fiolet often says, the hardest part of Wearable Devices is to make people wear them, and TCL’s design has the merit of being attractive. It’s something that people would want to try and see how they can benefit from it. Next step: prove to us the display is worth looking at.

New Lenovo ThinkPad Z Series Introduced At CES

At CES 2022, The newly announced ThinkPad Z Series is one of the most exciting ThinkPad evolution to date. With two new laptops, Lenovo is addressing a particular market at the high-end where excellent functionality and performance comes with sustainability and design.

The sustainability aspect might target new corporate policies promoted worldwide by investors and board members. It’s a pretty good idea to have products that address such requirements as they might be a sway factor, everything else being equal.

This ThinkPad Z-Series will feature two display sizes: 13 and 16 inches, called ThinkPad Z13 and ThinkPad Z16, respectively.

The Z13 with vegan leather finish

Lenovo offers different materials and colors, including dark (vegan) leather and silver (recycled) aluminum options. Building with sustainable materials is excellent, but Lenovo also ships these computers in recyclable packaging, including some bamboo-based packaging that is compostable, which is even better than just recyclable.

Upon opening the laptop, it’s apparent that the display has a high screen-to-body ratio (92.3% according to Lenovo), which is another way to talk about skinny bezels. This ratio is made possible by moving the webcam hardware into an independent module, which frees up space within the bezel.

That’s a good idea. Other OEMs tried moving the webcam to the display’s bottom, but that’s not a great vantage point to film the user. And since the webcam module allows for more space, Lenovo has upgraded its camera hardware with a seemingly much better sensor and lens. We’re curious to see the new imaging capabilities in action.

The Z13 keyboard goes edge-to-edge

On the Z13, the full-size keyboard goes edge-to-edge, and you can see how compact the laptop’s width is. The full-width glass palm rest is new for Lenovo, with a 120mm trackpad. If you’ve followed our Lenovo laptop reviews, you know that this is a significant size increase, although Lenovo has slowly inflated trackpad size in recent generations.

The upper area of the trackpad also serves as TrackPoint buttons, so all the typical ThinkPad input functionality is intact. A double-tap on the TrackPoint now opens a collaboration menu, and this is new.

The Z16 version has much more space around the keyboard, which seems to be used for the superior speaker system. Because of this, I expect the ThinkPad Z16 to feature significantly better audio output, but we’ll see when we can take them for a spin.

The Z16 size allows for better audio and higher performance

The Z16 with an aluminum finish

Inside, both laptops are powered by AMD Ryzen processors. The ThinkPad Z13 has a Ryzen PRO U-Series and its integrated GPU, and it’s a unique CPU SKU that AMD makes for Lenovo, with slightly higher performance than normal. The ThinkPad Z16 can be configured with optional discrete AMD Radeon GPU alongside its Ryzen PRO H-Series, so that’s the one to get if you need serious graphics muscle.

AMD’s CPU will also include a security unit compatible with Microsoft’s Pluto architecture which is designed to move some security layer inside the CPU. Pluto makes things even more secure as some data could previously be attacked in-between the CPU and the motherboard chipset during transit.

All Windows-compatible CPU makers (AMD, Intel, Qualcomm) will have Pluto-compatible hardware, but it’s an exciting security improvement nonetheless.

Overall, the new ThinkPad Z seems like a great addition to the ThinkPad family and goes after the high-end corporate “thin&light + design” laptop market with a very healthy competition (XPS 13, HP Spectre, Huawei Matebook, etc.). the Z Series could help Lenovo gain more share in a hotly contested area if successful, as I don’t think other OEMs have pushed sustainability as far.

Wi-Fi 6 (a.k.a., the 802.11ax standard) is also starting to make its way to computers and laptops, but its adoption at home hasn’t exactly been as fast. … Continue reading

Alienware's quantum dot OLED monitor promises color-accurate gaming

A gaming brand probably isn’t your first pick for a (mostly) no-compromise PC monitor, but you might want to reconsider after this. Dell has unveiled what it claims is the world’s first quantum dot OLED monitor, the Alienware 34 Curved QD-OLED Gaming Di. The ultra-wide panel mates the ultra-high contrast ratio of OLED with the improved brightness, color range and uniformity of a quantum dot pixel layer. In theory, you won’t have to compromise on either image quality or gaming performance — you’ll get 99.3 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and wide viewing angles, but you’ll still have up to a 175Hz refresh rate and an 0.1ms gray-to-gray pixel response time.

The bid for a no-compromise panel extends to the software. A Creator mode makes it easier to tweak gamma settings and even flip between DCI-P3 and sRGB color spaces. While there are only so many creators who’ll consider curved displays (the panels can introduce reflections and distortion), this could be helpful if you moonlight as a photo editor.

This isn’t quite a dream display. HDR brightness is limited to a modest DisplayHDR 400, and the 3,440 x 1,440 resolution won’t thrill anyone used to 4K or beyond. You might still like the abundance of ports (four USB 3.2 Gen 1 downstream ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 1 upstream, two HDMI 2.0 and one DisplayPort 1.4), and Alienware is promising to fight OLED’s burn-in risk with “improved” reliability and a three-year warranty that covers burn-in artifacts.

The 34 QD-OLED reaches North America on March 29th. Dell said it would only share pricing closer to the release date, but it’s safe to presume you’ll pay a premium. The Alienware team is clearly courting enthusiasts who want do-it-all monitors, and OLED doesn’t come cheap at these sizes.

Chipolo's new credit card-sized tracker features Find My support

Chipolo has bobbed around for a while as one of those companies orbiting inside Tile’s universe of Bluetooth-enabled object trackers. But, last year, the company’s One Spot tracker was able to access Apple’s Find My network, giving it the same superpowers as an AirTag. Now, half a year later, the company is launching a credit card-shaped tracker designed to give your wallet a similar level of protection.

The Chipolo Card Spot (sorry, we’re not going to call it the CARD Spot) can be paired to the Find My network with your iOS device. You’ll be able to track it should you leave it behind, and also get the option of notifications if you’ve left it behind when you’re out and about. Chipolo adds that the integral speaker will chirrip at 105dB to ensure that you’ll be able to hear it when you lose it. And that it’ll also withstand water, should you have a mishap during a fishing trip.

If there’s one downside, it’s that the battery isn’t replaceable, so once the two-year claimed lifespan is up, you’ll need to buy a new one. Chipolo does, however, say that you’ll get a 50 percent discount on the replacement and get a pre-paid envelope to return the expired unit. Oh, and you’ll be able to set it into Lost Mode, so when someone in the Find My network passes by, it’ll hopefully ensure your stuff gets returned to you.

Certainly, a credit card-shaped tracker is going to be invaluable for those folks who want to leverage Apple’s most recent innovation. There are a number of aftermarket AirTag holders that will enable it to slide (slightly awkwardly, mind) into a credit card slot, and now we’re seeing more wallets with space for an AirTag hanging off the side. But all of those are designed to accommodate the slightly impractical nature of that round design.

Chipolo says that pre-orders for the Card Spot will open from today, with shipping expected to begin next month. For a single unit, it’ll be $35, while a pair will be priced at $60, and if you’d rather get a single Card Spot and a pair of One Spot trackers, it’ll be $77.
