Roland's AeroCaster VRC-01 is a wireless video mixer for streamers

Roland has been making inroads into the Pro AV space for a while. The AeroCaster VRC-01 is its latest hardware offering in this space with a focus on streamers and creators. The mini video-switching console operates almost entirely wirelessly and allows a multi-source video setup using just phones and laptops over WiFi or cellular.

You’ll need to connect the AeroCaster to an iPad to run the main mixing software, but all the other video inputs are wireless via either Roland’s own AeroCaster Camera mobile app or laptop users can remote screen share via Chrome. In short, if you ever wanted to make a multi-cam podcast or music video, but don’t want the headache of several dedicated cameras, AeroCaster will let you do it with the phones you might already have.

Roland has some pretty strong credentials in this space thanks to its V-series of Pro AV video switchers and mixers. The VRC-01 appears to be a more consumer-friendly option with a focus on Twitchers and YouTubers (though you can also stream to Facebook Live or any RTMP channel too). From the console you can switch cameras and mix audio in real time. There are two combo XLR inputs for pro-grade microphones or TRS/phone input along with some simple audio effects such as reverb and lip sync delay.

A lot of the above functionality was already possible via some of Roland’s higher-end gear and its AeroCaster Switcher app, but the VRC-01 and new companion iPad app seem more streamlined and accessible. In many ways, it feels like the video-friendly sibling to the GO:Mixer Pro X with both offering “prosumer” features in a smaller, more affordable package.

The VRC-O1 will be available in March and cost $295.

HomeKit Vulnerability Could Render iPhones Unusable

It appears that Apple’s HomeKit has a vulnerability that if exploited, could render iPhones useless. This is according to a blog post by security researcher Trevor Spiniolas who discovered the vulnerability and shared the details on his website.

According to Spiniolas, it seems that the vulnerability involves allowing a HomeKit connected device to have its name changed to 500,000 characters. Spiniolas writes:

“When the name of a HomeKit device is changed to a large string (500,000 characters in testing), any device with an affected iOS version installed that loads the string will be disrupted, even after rebooting. Restoring a device and signing back into the iCloud account linked to the HomeKit device will again trigger the bug.”

The researcher says that he had initially reported the bug to Apple way back in August of 2021, but it appears that despite iOS 15.2 being released, the bug is still there. Apple had apparently promised to address it in another update by the end of 2021, but that did not happen, which is why Spiniolas has decided to go public with his discovery.

That being said, it seems that users don’t even need to have devices connected to HomeKit for this bug to occur. It can even affect users who are invited to a Home that contains a HomeKit device with the large string in its name. Those who are affected will then find that their phones will become unresponsive and that any input to the device will either be ignored or significantly delayed.

You can actually see this bug in action in the video above. Hopefully Apple will have a fix for it soon.

GAF Energy Launches Solar Shingle That You Can Nail To Your Roof

The problem with solar panel installation is that it’s not exactly a walk in the park, plus it kind of makes the roof of your home ugly if it’s retrofitted. This is a problem that companies like Tesla have tried to solar with the Solar Roof, but it created another problem and that is it required a specialized team to install it.

There is also another issue of if certain parts of the panel fail, you can’t just replace it like you would with traditional roof shingles, and that’s a problem that GAF Energy thinks that they have solved with their Timberline Solar shingles. The company claims that installation is easy where all you really need is a nailgun (and roofers) and you’re set.

Instead of retrofitting a bulky set of solar panels like back in the day, or having your entire roof replaced like Tesla’s Solar Roof, the Timberline Solar series can be installed on top of your existing roof simply by being nailed into place. The upside is that if it needs to be replaced, you can just remove the defective piece without having to redo your entire roof.

The company claims that the Timberline Solar are the first products to receive UL’s 7103 certification, where it can serve as both solar panels and construction material. It features the use of glass, polysilicon solar cells, and a proprietary top made out of fluorinated alkane ethylene polymer that’s fire-resistant and impact-resistant, and they’re even textured so that roofers can safely walk on them during the installation process.

That being said, there is no mention of how much these solar tiles will cost, but homeowners who are interested in making their homes more eco-friendly can enquire with the company’s roofing contractors across the US East Coast and Texas.

Samsung’s 2022 TVs Will Let You Stream NVIDIA GeForce Now And Stadia

If you enjoy streaming games on your phone, tablet, or PC, then you might be happy to hear that for Samsung’s 2022 TV lineup, the company will be introducing new software to its TVs and one of it will come in the form of the Gaming Hub.

Through this hub, gamers will be able to download game streaming services such as NVIDIA’s GeForce Now, Google Stadia, and Utomik, after which gamers will then be able to stream all their favorite games and play it through their TVs. It should be noted that this isn’t Samsung’s first foray into game streaming.

Dating back as far as 2012, both Samsung and LG had actually competed for the rights to stream games through other services like Gakai and OnLive, and later Samsung even allowed gamers to stream their PlayStation Now games through select TVs. However, to be fair, game streaming was still in its infancy back in those days, and now with more established players in the market, this feature could be a lot more appealing.

As far as quality is concerned, Google told The Verge that gamers who are subscribed to its Stadia Pro tier will be able to stream games in 4K, so you will be able to take advantage of the TV’s display and resolution. As for NVIDIA, the company states that they are still “working with partners” so it is still unclear on that front.

Oral-B’s new flagship iO toothbrush puts your brushing stats on its charging base

Oral-B’s iO has marked itself out as the smartest and fanciest of all the fancy smart electric toothbrushes on the market. With a pressure sensor, OLED display and smartphone coaching, the iO Series 9 is, or was, the most luxurious way to clean your teeth. Today, however, the company has decided to broaden out the range of iO toothbrushes with both an even higher-end flagship above, and some more affordable models below.

The new flagship is the iO10 with iOSense, which the company is calling the “ultimate oral health coach,” which eliminates one of the biggest problems with the iO9. With the existing model, the pressure warning light — which tells you if you’re pressing too hard on your teeth — and countdown timer is on the brush itself. That makes it very hard to tell when you’re done unless you’re staring intently at yourself in a mirror.

The iO10, meanwhile, duplicates that information on its new beefier charging base, with a digital countdown timer, pressure warnings and even a ring of lights that correspond to the six areas of our mouths. That means you don’t have to open your phone every single time you brush in order to check all of your teeth are getting an equal amount of attention. Of course, it does mean that you’ll need to have your charger plugged in your bathroom at all times, which might be an issue for some.

There’s no price for the iO10 as it stands, just an invitation to sign up for the waitlist for whenever this particular product is available for sale.

At the same time, the company is launching the iO4 and iO5, which are scaled-down versions of the iO model for various budget buyers. Both come with the smart pressure sensor and the same high-end rotating head as the flagship. But the iO4 only has four brushing modes, and no digital display, while the iO5 has a fifth mode and the benefit of on-board AI and access to live coaching via the app. Those models will be priced at under $100, and will be made available nationwide at some point in 2022.

Ford is doubling F-150 Lightning production to 150,000 vehicles a year

Ford is making new efforts to double production capacity of the F-150 Lightning electric pickup to 150,000 vehicles per year, the company announced. That follows news from December that it capped pre-orders at 200,000 units, with CEO Jim Farley saying “we are completely oversubscribed with our battery electric vehicles.” In addition, the company will start inviting the first group of reservation holders to place orders for the F-150 Lightning starting on Thursday, January 6th.

To boost production, Ford said it created a small task force of employees from “manufacturing, purchasing, strategy, product development, and capacity planning” to find ways to accelerate production. It’s also working with key suppliers “to find ways to increase capacity of electric vehicle parts, including battery cells, battery trays and electric drive systems,” the company said in a press release.

The company noted that the F-150 Lightning is now in the the final pre-build phase before moving into mass production for retail and commercial customers, with deliveries starting this spring. The aim is to test production vehicles over a million miles or so in real-world customer conditions.

One year after Ford confirmed construction of the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Mich., the first Ford F-150 Lightning pre-production units begin leaving the factory. Pre-production model shown. F-150 Lightning available starting spring 2022.

On the order side, Ford said it’s using a wave-by-wave reservation process, asking pre-order holders to watch for an invitation via email or check their Ford.com account. The automaker indicated that later pre-order holders might have to wait for vehicles from the following model year. (Ford also noted that over 75 percent of reservation holders were new to the brand.)

Deliveries of the 2022 F-150 Lightning pickup will begin in spring of 2022 with a starting MSRP of $39,974 before any available tax incentives. However, some reports indicate that some dealers may be dinging customers up to $30,000 extra to be among the first to receive their vehicles.

Ford recently announced that it would triple production of the Mustang Mach-E to reach 200,000 units per year by 2023, with plans to have the “global capacity to produce 600,000 BEVs annually.” To do that, it’s building what it calls its “most advanced, most efficient auto production facility in its 118-year history in Tennessee,” along with three battery plants built in collaboration with SK Innovation. All of that represents a total $11.4 billion investment with 11,000 new jobs created.

The F-150 Lightning is eligible for a full $7,500 US BEV tax credit as of today (along with any state subsidies), but Ford is expected to hit its 200,000 vehicle eligibility limit later this year. At that point, the credit will gradually be phased out unless new legislation is passed that would change the rules.

ASUS Creates A DDR5 Adapter For DDR4 RAM Modules

The ongoing chip shortage is affecting a wide variety of industries. We don’t just mean chips like CPUs or SoCs like the ones found in smartphones, but basically anything that requires a chip in order to work are affected (such as cameras). This also includes RAM, which is why if you’re finding it difficult to secure a DDR5 RAM module, you’re not alone.

However, ASUS has an interesting solution and that comes in the form of an adapter that lets you slot DDR4 RAM into a motherboard that supports DDR5, such as the new Z69 motherboards that were designed to bring DDR5 RAM to desktops for the first time.

Some of you might be wondering why can’t you just slot in a DDR4 RAM module into the motherboard? This is because save for some lower-end motherboards that support both DDR4 and DDR5, higher-end motherboards, especially those for gaming, support only DDR5. Also, due to the difference in architecture and power supply, a pure DDR5 motherboard lacks the ability to manage the power supply of a DDR4 module, which is a problem the adapter tries to solve.

The adapter won’t magically give your DDR4 RAM DDR5 properties, but it’s more like a stop-gap solution where you could buy or reuse your existing DDR4 RAM in your new build until DDR5 RAM becomes more widely available again. That being said, keep in mind that ASUS isn’t actually selling this adapter just yet and we’re not sure if there are plans to eventually sell it, so in the meantime either hold out on your build or opt for something cheaper to tide you over.

Withings’ New Smart Scale Can Even Measure Your Nerve Activity

Weighing scales these days have gotten a lot more hi-tech than they were back in the day. These days, many weighing scales are smarter and can do more than just tell you how much you weigh. Some can even do things like check your posture and balance and recommend you exercises to improve it.

This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that at CES 2022, Withings has unveiled its new smart scale called the Body Scan. It will do everything you might expect from a smart scale, like measure your weight and body composition. However, it can go even further than that as it will come with new sensors that can check your heart rhythm like an ECG machine, and also assess your nerve activity.

This is done through the measurement of the sweat gland activity in your feet where it can offer users a daily assessment of your small nerve activity. It can even determine your vascular age if you’re curious about your heart health.

The Body Scale will also use Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to measure your body composition, so if you’re wondering about things like body-fat percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass, water content, and more, it will be able to tell you those things. As expected, it pairs with a smartphone app and you can take that data to your doctors if you need further consultation.

The Withings Body Scale will be going on sale in the second half of 2022 where it will be priced at $299.95.

Oral-B’s iO10 With iOSense Is The Smart Toothbrush You Never Knew You Needed

Just because you brush your teeth everyday doesn’t mean that you are guaranteed to have clean teeth or healthy gums. This is because how you brush is more important. If you’re trying to find ways to better improve your teeth and gum hygiene, Oral-B has you covered with the company’s new iO10 with iOSense smart toothbrush.

We reckon that this has to be one of the most over-engineered toothbrushes we’ve come across, but at the same time, the various benefits it promises does seem to be rather tantalizing. It comes with some basic functions like brushing time. It can also even guide you to ensure you’re not missing out on any spots, and it can even tell you how much pressure to use so that you don’t damage your teeth or gums during the brushing process.

The iO10 also comes with as many as seven different cleaning modes that includes Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Intense, Whiten, Gum Care, and Tongue Clean. It also syncs up with the Oral-B app in case you want to track your brushing habits and get better insights into how well you’re cleaning your teeth and if there is anything that you might need to change.

Oral-B doesn’t mention how much the iO10 will cost, but with the previous model priced at $300, we expect that this new model should be roughly around the same range. Those who are interested can actually sign up and be placed on the waiting list on Oral-B’s website.
