Acer Chromebook Spin 513 Unveiled With An Interesting Display

Usually when it comes to displays, the larger the display, the more expensive it is. This is usually the case for monitors, TVs, and of course, laptops. However, if you want a larger laptop display but don’t want to pay a premium for it, then you might be interested in the Acer Chromebook Spin 513.

Unveiled at CES 2022, the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 is rather unique in the sense that instead of using a display that has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is kind of the norm, it uses a 3:2 ratio which means that users will actually have an additional 18% of vertical space on the 13.5-inch display.

If you’re someone who reads a lot of websites or does coding and you need to see more lines of code, having a taller display can help. This is also why some developers actually have a monitor setup in vertical mode when working. In addition to the display, the laptop will also be powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 chipset, which features 8-cores and boasts up to 10 hours of battery life.

It is also a hybrid design which means that you can easily flip the keyboard around and transform the laptop into a tablet. There is support for WiFi 6, DTS Audio with upward-firing speakers, built-in microphones, and it is also MIL-STD 810H rated which means that it should be able to survive some bumps and knocks.

The Acer Chromebook Spin 513 will be available in North America in June 2022 where it will be priced starting at $599.99.

Valeo New LiDAR Gen 3, and Valeo NFL, To Power Autonomous Driving

Like other major OEMs and car manufacturers, Valeo has decided to reduce its in-person presence at CES 2022. The press conference will now be held virtually on CES Press Day (Jan. 4th) at 9 AM PT.

One of the top leaders in the ADAS market, Valeo will showcase its latest LiDAR technologies during the show.

Valeo third-generation scanning LiDAR

A month ago, Valeo announced its brand new third-generation scanning LiDAR, a key technology that enables ADAS and autonomous driving. Today, Valeo’s laser-based scanning LiDAR 3rd Gen is making its debut at CES before hitting the market in 2024 (watch the video above, LiDAR demo movie starts at 1 min 39).

According to the company, the laser allows the new LiDAR to detect objects located at 200+ meters from the sensors, invisible to the human eye, cameras, and radars. The LiDAR adapts to all light conditions, from extremely bright to pitch black. Furthermore, the innovative detection system is able to measure the density of raindrops to calculate the right braking distance on wet roads.

Valeo, which designs the entire system (hardware, software, and associated AI), claims that its  3rd-gen LiDAR reconstructs a 3D real-time image of the car’s surroundings with a computing power of  4.5 million pixels per second and a 25 fps frame rate. Compared to the previous generation, the resolution is 12 times higher, the range is 3 times larger and the viewing angle is 2.5 times wider.

The Valeo LiDAR algorithms manage emergency situations autonomously by predicting surrounding vehicles’ trajectories and triggering maneuvers to prevent collisions. Just like some of the competitive ADAS technologies, the new Valeo LiDAR Gen 3 powers autonomous driving level 2 and above, including on the highway at speeds up to 130 km/h.

What sets Valeo apart from its competitor and market pioneer, Velodyne, is its ability to mass-produce a scanning LiDAR at an industrial scale. In early 2021, due to Velodyne’s mass production issues, Hyundai reportedly switched to Valeo’s LiDAR for its level 3 autonomous Genesis G90 vehicle, despite having invested over $54.3 million in Velodyne.

The tier-one automotive supplier claims to have manufactured over 150,000 units and 99% of cars equipped with a scanning LiDAR scanner worldwide are equipped with a Valeo scanning LiDAR.

Today, the competitive battle in the LiDAR industry focuses on cost reduction, with a number of key players emerging in recent years, including Robosense, Hesai, Livox, Innoviz, and Luminar Technologies.

Valeo’s new NFL LiDAR with 360°, near field vision

To accompany its long-range sibling, Valeo is launching the Valeo NFL, a LiDAR dedicated to near-field vision. The Valeo NFL aims at equipping droids and robotaxis with near-field 360°, computer vision that creates a safety sphere around the vehicle. The autonomous devices will be able to navigate their surroundings while steering clear of pedestrians, animals, and other obstacles.

Alienware’s Concept Nyx Lets You Create Your Own Game Streaming Server At Home

One of the advantages of cloud gaming is that you can pick up where you left off regardless of what device you’re playing from. The downside is that you will require an active internet connection, whether it be WiFi or through your carrier’s network.

However, it seems that Dell is trying to rethink this setup and refine it further, which is why they have since unveiled the Alienware Concept Nyx at CES 2022. This is essentially a game server of sorts, combined with a smart controller, and software that will then connect to your modem or router and broadcast games from it to various devices that are connected to your network.

Basically, you could think of this as being your personal game streaming service, where you and other people in your home will be able to stream games via the Nyx at the same time. This is versus regular PC gaming where if someone’s using the PC, another person won’t be able to play it.

Plus, since it connects over your own local network, you don’t have to worry as much about latency compared to if you were connected to a game streaming service’s servers where your internet speed and the connection to the servers is important. The smart controller can also be used to store all your information like login data, game library, and allows you to pick up where you left off.

It is an interesting device but right now as the name suggests, it is more of a concept than an actual product you can buy. We’re not sure if there are plans to eventually make the Nyx a reality, but it might be worth keeping an eye on.
