Google Play Store's new 'Offers' tab highlights deals on apps, movies and more

Google has launched an Offers tab for the Play Store featuring deals on apps, games, movies, books and other purchases, Android Police has reported. It appears at the bottom of the Play screen, along with Games, Apps, Movies & TV and Books, separate from the existing “Offers and notifications” section.

“[Offers is] a new tab in the Google Play Store app to help you discover deals in games and apps across travel, shopping, media & entertainment, fitness, and more,” Google said in a blog post. When you tap on the tab, it displays multiple carousels with offers on movie rentals, apps, games and more. It includes sales on in-game items, in-app purchases and offers app trials, Android Police noted.

Google used to have a separate Android app called “Offers,” that let you find deals in your current location, but that was way back in 2011 with Android 2.1 “Eclair” when Google Play was called Android Market. Its current “Offers & notifications” section on Play is sparse and not that easy to find, while the new tab is front and center and covers a wide range of products. The Offers tab is already rolling out to the US, India and Indonesia and will arrive in other markets later this year.

iOS 15.4 Will Let Users Unlock Their iPhones While Wearing A Mask

As we are still wearing our masks due to the ongoing pandemic, this has created some problems such as unlocking our iPhones using Face ID. However, Apple did come up with a workaround by allowing users with an Apple Watch to unlock their iPhones while wearing a face mask.

But what about users who did not own an Apple Watch? It didn’t really seem fair, right? The good news is that Apple appears to be remedying the situation. According to the latest iOS 15.4 beta that was released to developers, it appears that Apple is making some changes to the way Face ID works, where users can actually choose an option to unlock their iPhones while wearing a mask without needing an Apple Watch.

Unfortunately, there is some bad news about this feature and that is it will only work with the iPhone 12 and newer. While Face ID was originally introduced in the iPhone X back in 2017, it seems that this feature will only be able to work with the iPhone 12 and newer, which for now basically only covers the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series, so those with the iPhone X, XS, or iPhone 11 are out of luck.

We’re not sure what so different about the previous iPhones with Face ID that makes them incompatible with this feature, but unless something changes in future betas, older iPhone users are out of luck here.

Tinder Will Soon Offer Background Checks For Its Users

The problem with online dating is that you can’t always be sure that who you are talking to online are who they say they are. After all, it’s not that difficult to take a photo of someone else on the internet and upload it to your profile and claim that is you. It’s also not that hard to lie about things such as age, job, and so on.

These are some of the potential dangers people face when trying to date online, but the good news for Tinder members is that soon users will be able to perform background checks. This was announced on Tinder’s blog where users will soon be able to access background checks on their matches through Garbo.

Tinder’s parent company, Match, actually announced back in 2021 that they were teaming up with Garbo for background checks, but we haven’t really heard anything much about that partnership after it was announced, at least until now.

For those unfamiliar, Garbo is a nonprofit organization that helps users perform background checks on other people. From what we can tell, this is done by pulling publicly available information such as whether they have any criminal offenses linked to them or if they might be a sex offender.

Moderna Starts Early Trials For Its mRNA-based HIV Vaccine

Back in the day, contracting HIV was almost like a death sentence simply because we did not fully understand the virus back then and did not know how to treat it. These days, the treatment of HIV is so good to the point where those who take their medicine regularly on schedule can pretty much lead normal lives.

However, obviously if there was a way to prevent HIV from being contracted in the first place, that would be ideal, and Moderna is now working towards that. The company has announced that they have begun their early-stage clinical trials for a HIV vaccine that would be based on mRNA, the same vaccine tech behind the company’s COVID-19 vaccine.

The idea behind the mRNA vaccine is that the company hopes it will induce a specific class of white blood cells known as B-cells, which will then turn into broadly neutralizing antibodies. According to Moderna, apparently these proteins are considered to be the goal of HIV vaccination.

To date, no HIV vaccine has successfully passed early clinical trials. Also, so far to date there hasn’t been a cure discovered yet for HIV. We have heard stories of a couple of people who have successfully recovered from HIV, but it has yet to become a mainstream cure that can be applied to other people who have the virus.

Amazon allegedly called union organizers 'thugs' to discourage workers from unionizing

The National Labor Relations Board has accused Amazon of threatening, surveilling and interrogating workers at its JFK8 warehouse in New York to discourage them from unionizing. According to the board’s complaint as seen by Motherboard, Amazon brought a union avoidance consultant to the facility and told employees that it “would be futile for them to select the Union as their bargaining representative.” The consultant reportedly said that union organizing at the warehouse would fail anyway, because the organizers were “thugs.”

NLRB’s complaint also said that Amazon representatives interrogated workers about union activities and promised to fix their issues if they didn’t support the union and didn’t distribute union literature. Further, the labor board alleges that security guards confiscated union literature from workers and told them they couldn’t distribute the materials without permission. If you’ll recall, Amazon’s warehouse workers in New York filed a petition to unionize with the board last year, but they had to withdraw it after failing to gather enough signatures to be approved. The JFK8 workers re-filed their application in December and recently reached union vote threshold.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel denied the allegations to Motherboard, telling the publication: “These allegations are false and we look forward to showing that through this process.”

These allegations come from a series of unfair labor practice charges filed by workers in May and June last year. The board investigated the incidents and found merit that they occurred. It has given Amazon February 10th to respond to the complaint and has set a hearing for it on April 5th. In addition to detailing workers’ allegations in its complaint, the NLRB has also outlined a series of remedies it wants the company to follow. In particular, it wants Amazon to train its managers, supervisors, security guards and union avoidance consultants on workers’ rights to organize and form unions.

Most recently it has captured global attention with its James Webb Space Telescope launch and journey to its new orbit, while it is also making headlines with its Artemis mission to the moon and beyond along with its ongoing scientific exploits on Mars and elsewhere. This week NASA has … Continue reading

NASA hopes to speed up mission scheduling with help from Microsoft's Quantum division

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is partnering with Microsoft’s Azure Quantum team to explore how it can communicate more efficiently with spacecraft. Compared to some of the hurdles the agency has overcome to put missions like Perseverance on Mars, staying in touch with those spacecraft might not seem so difficult. However, sending instructions to every mission the agency has on the go is its own logistical challenge.

NASA depends on the Deep Space Network, a series of radio antennae located across the US, Spain and Australia. It allows the agency to stay in constant contact with its spacecraft, even as the Earth rotates. Scheduling the use of that system is something NASA notes involves a lot of constraints. For example, not every dish in the network is equally capable of communicating with spacecraft that are on the edge of the solar system. What’s more, missions like the James Webb Space Telescope and Perseverance Rover put an increased load on the system due to the amount of high-fidelity data they need to transmit back to Earth.

As such, NASA has to devote considerable computing resources to prioritize and schedule the hundreds of communication requests its teams put in each week. And that’s where Microsoft thought it could help. The company applied some of the things it learned optimizing quantum algorithms to tackle NASA’s scheduling headache using classical computers. At the start of the project, it took two hours for the company to compile a DSN schedule. Using its Azure network, Microsoft created a schedule in 16 minutes. A further “custom solution” allowed it to make one in two minutes.

The ability to make schedules in minutes, as opposed to hours, is something Microsoft says will give NASA flexibility and allow it to be more agile as an organization. Microsoft says there’s further work it needs to do before the system has all the features that JPL needs, but it could one day help the team as it prepares to launch more complex missions that involve journeys to the Moon and beyond the solar system.
