Apple Will Now Require Proof Of Student Status Before Giving Discounts

As some of you know, Apple offers discounts for some of its products to students or teachers. However, users never really needed to show proof that they were students, all they really needed was an email address from a college/university. This meant that even though you might have graduated 5 years ago, as long as your email address is active, you could take advantage of this.

However, it looks like that loophole has since been closed and now Apple will require that customers who are looking to take advantage of the education discount will now have to verify their eligibility. This will take customers to UniDays, a third-party website that handles verification, before users can complete their purchase.

It is unclear when this change came into effect as it was not announced by Apple, but noticed by users on Reddit. However, it has been pointed out that it seems to be very recent because those changes were not put into place during the holiday shopping season of 2021, meaning that it could have been early this year that the changes were implemented.

To be fair, Apple only offers these discounts to students and teachers so if you’re technically neither, then you shouldn’t have been able to take advantage of it in the first place. The fact that Apple allowed this loophole to be exploited for so long is actually kind of amazing.

Don’t Worry, Call Of Duty For The PlayStation Isn’t Going Anywhere

A few days ago, Microsoft announced their intentions to acquire Activision Blizzard. This has raised many questions and some concerns, namely how Microsoft will approach titles that are available on other consoles like the Nintendo Switch or Sony’s PlayStation.

There is cause for some concern because when Microsoft acquired Bethesda, the company suggested that not all games would necessarily be available for non-Xbox/PC devices, such as the upcoming Elder Scrolls 6 which was reported to be an Xbox exclusive.

However, there is some good news for Call of Duty gamers because according to Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, he tweeted that Microsoft plans to continue making the game available on the PlayStation console and that Microsoft will honor all existing agreements that Activision might have had prior to the acquisition.

This makes sense because games like Call of Duty have huge player bases on both Xbox and PlayStation, so it doesn’t make sense for Microsoft to alienate an entire market just to make it an Xbox exclusive.

We’re not sure if they plan to do this for the foreseeable future or just for more immediate titles, but for now, PlayStation Call of Duty players can rest assured that they will be able to keep enjoying the game.

Twitter Blue Subscribers Can Now Put Their NFTs As Profile Pictures

As more NFTs are being created and with more people buying them, Twitter has announced that users who are subscribed to their Twitter Blue program can now display their NFTs as their profile pictures.

For those unfamiliar, Twitter Blue is a relatively new subscription service launched by Twitter last year. The main difference is that Twitter Blue will unlock additional features that regular, free Twitter users will not be able to access, and using an NFT as a profile picture will be one of the perks that subscribers can look forward to.

What’s interesting about this is that this is one of the features that Facebook and Instagram have been rumored to be working on, but it looks like Twitter has beaten them to the punch. However, the question is what’s stopping someone from saving a picture of the NFT and uploading it to Twitter to use as a profile picture themselves?

According to the video above, users can actually click the NFT to verify who owns it, meaning that users can brag that they are using an actual NFT versus a saved JPG. We’re not sure if Twitter plans to take action against users who upload NFT pictures that they do not own, but it’s definitely an interesting direction that they are headed towards.

Instagram will now reduce the visibility of 'potentially harmful' content

Instagram is taking new steps to make “potentially harmful” content less visible in its app. The company says that the algorithm powering the way posts are ordered in users’ feeds and in Stories will now de-prioritize content that “may contain bullying, hate speech or may incite violence.”

While Instagram’s rules already prohibit much of this type of content, the change could affect borderline posts, or content that hasn’t yet reached the app’s moderators. “To understand if something may break our rules, we’ll look at things like if a caption is similar to a caption that previously broke our rules,” the company explains in an update.

Up until now, Instagram has tried to hide potentially objectionable content from public-facing parts of the app, like Explore, but hasn’t changed how it appears to users who follow the accounts posting this type of content. The latest change means that posts deemed “similar” to those that have been previously removed will be much less visible even to followers. A spokesperson for Meta confirmed that “potentially harmful” posts could still be eventually removed if the post breaks its community guidelines.

The update follows a similar change in 2020, when Instagram began down-ranking accounts that shared misinformation that was debunked by fact checkers. Unlike that change, however, Instagram says that the latest policy will only affect individual posts and “not accounts overall.”

Additionally, Instagram says it will now factor in each individual user’s reporting history into how it orders their feeds. “If our systems predict you’re likely to report a post based on your history of reporting content, we will show the post lower in your Feed,” Instagram says.

Upcoming Windows 11 Update Lets You Type With Your Voice

Both Windows and macOS allow users to type using their voice. It’s essentially a speech-to-text feature where instead of typing on a keyboard, you just say out what you want written as text and it will attempt to convert it for you.

For the most part, it works if you’re speaking and using “regular” words, but what about certain names or words that aren’t necessarily readily identifiable? For example, what if you’re speaking out a foreign name and Windows doesn’t understand it? Or what if you need to type a mix of letters and numbers?

The good news is that according to Microsoft, they are working on an update to Windows 11 that will allow users to quite literally type using their voice. Basically instead of saying out words and numbers, you will speak out the individual alphabets and numbers to “type” them into your computer.

So for example if you needed to spell out a website URL, an address, or an email address, instead of hoping that Windows will understand what you’re trying to say, you can spell it out letter by letter, number by number, and it will input it into the computer for you. Right now, the feature is only available to users in the Dev channel, so it might be a while before it will be available to all users.
