TCL 30 Series Smartphones Get New Affordable Models

TCL has just released a new volley of TCL 30 Series smartphones priced between 139 and 249 Euros during MWC 2022, along with other products such as tablets, portable WIFI, and 4G Routers.

The smartphones are probably the most interesting products to consumers. All are powered by MediaTek, the #1 provider of Android smartphone SoC chips (by units) globally.

The new phones are the TCL 30 5G (€249), TCL 30+ (€199), TCL 30 (€179), TCL 30 SE (€149), and TCL 30 E (€139).

That seems like a lot of models within a tight price range, but in the real world, they won’t all be available at the same retailers, and some would probably land under some exclusive deals, so you won’t have to pull your hair to choose between them.

From what I can tell, TCL is trying to keep the user experience as uniform as possible, but of course, performance, whether speed or Camera, should be expected to be proportional to pricing.

With our CAMERA HW benchmark, we’ve demonstrated that camera performance mainly depends on the camera hardware. The price is often your first indicator in that context as it influences the components’ prices.

Technologically, the TCL 30 5G is the most interesting and seems to bring a lot of value at this ~250 Euros price point. My general advice is to get the most expensive one you can afford (easy, right?) as the value seems pretty proportional to the price.

Since that phone is certified as “Android Enterprise” ready, some of you might get your company to pay for it. It’s worth checking with your IT department as it may be one of the best options for the price.

All these phones have large screens, which means having enough room for a 5010 mAh large battery in the chassis. Combined with the power-efficient processor, you should be in for excellent battery life.

At the moment, the launch concerns Europe, but you can expect to see some of these in the rest of the world soon, so keep an eye out for them.

Instagram Says Not Enough iPad Users To Justify Developing An App For It

For years, Instagram has addressed the lack of an iPad app in various ways. Last year, Instagram head Adam Mosseri claimed that an Instagram app for the iPad was something nice to do, but the company has other things they’re working on that apparently take priority over it.

If you were hoping that fast forward to 2022 we might see an Instagram app for the iPad, it seems that won’t be the case. Mosseri recently tweeted a response to Marques Brownlee who stated that it’s 2022 and we still don’t have an Instagram app, in which Mosseri said that the reason for this is a lack of users.

According to Mosseri, he says that there isn’t a big enough group of users that would make developing an Instagram app a priority. He also notes that developing an Instagram app for the iPad would add to their costs, where basically every device that the app supports adds an overhead.

Plus, Mosseri’s tweet suggests that Instagram isn’t as big of a company as some people would think, claiming that they are “leaner than you think”. This isn’t to say that there will never be an Instagram app for the iPad, it’s just that iPad users probably shouldn’t hold their breaths for it.

2022 iPhone SE Could Be Priced Starting At $300

Apple’s iPhone SE is meant to be a cheaper alternative to the company’s flagship handsets. It is currently priced at $400 which while cheaper, isn’t exactly cheap per se, especially when you have phones from Xiaomi, Poco, and Samsung that are priced below that, but apparently that’s something the iPhone SE 5G could address.

According to a report from Investor’s Business Daily, they cite Loop Capital Markets analyst John Donovan who claims to have heard rumors that the 2022 iPhone SE could be priced as low as $300, making it almost $100 cheaper compared to the previous-gen model. Plus, the rumors claiming that the 2022 iPhone SE could come with 5G makes it an incredible bargain if it’s true.

While it is still more expensive compared to other budget brands out there, it could still prove to be enticing enough to make some customers switch over from Android, especially if price was one of the main reasons holding them back over the years from getting an iPhone. Of course, these are just rumors so take it with a grain of salt for now.

For all we know, Apple could possibly maintain the $399 price tag, or given the rumored upgrades could actually end up pricing it higher, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Leaked iPhone 14 Schematic Suggests Apple Will Be Ditching The Notch

Ever since the iPhone X made its debut and Apple included a notch in the front display to house the front-facing camera and its TrueDepth system, people have been complaining about its design. Most users have probably gotten used to it by now, but that doesn’t mean that they actually like it.

Apple did try to make it smaller in the iPhone 13, but it was still there. However, we could actually see the notch kind of disappear in the iPhone 14. This is according to an alleged leaked schematic posted on Weibo where it shows the front of what they are claiming is the iPhone 14 where the notch has been removed, and in its place Apple has opted to use a pill-shaped cutout.

While we’re sure some users might rejoice at the notch being gone, we’re not sure if this is any less obtrusive. This is because as you can see in the image above, the pill-shaped cutout followed by the circular cutout next to it aren’t exactly small, meaning that while the notch shape is gone, its replacement still looks like it could get in the way of things.

We have heard reports in the past that suggests that the iPhone 15 in 2023 will be the phone that could feature an in-display front-facing camera, so maybe this could be Apple’s way of transitioning to it. However, since all of this is unconfirmed, it’s probably best not to put too much stock into it for now.

New Samsung Galaxy Book2 Laptops Launched

At MWC 2022, Samsung announced new Galaxy Book2 laptops at multiple price points, including the Galaxy Book2 ($749.99), Galaxy Book2 360 ($899.99), Galaxy Book2 Pro ($1049.99) and Pro 360 ($1249.99). Finally, there’s the Galaxy Book2 Business $1,999.99.

The Galaxy Book Pro 360 is exciting as it exists in both 13.3 and 15.6 inches displays with 360-degrees hinges for a flat tablet utilization.

The included digitizer Pen would be exceptionally comfortable to use on the 15.6-inch display, but you might appreciate the compactness of the 13.3 model as well.

And you can sketch anywhere, including outdoors, thanks to the very bright 500 NITs display panel, which is much improved from last year.

The Super AMOLED’s FHD resolution might not be super-impressive, but the image quality should be top-notch. Most people don’t require a 3K (or 4K) display, but FHD is very decent for these sizes.

The chassis is skinny, so there is no full-size USB port. However, you’ll find three USB-C ones, including one Thunderbolt 4 one that can connect to a high-speed dock to extend the laptop’s connectivity at home.

The 15.6 chassis has a full-size HDMI port, which might be handy if you frequently connect to an external monitor or projector.

Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 Specs

The 2.29 Lbs and 3.11 Lbs weights of the 13.3 and 15.6 laptops are desirable if you’re often on the move. Even a 1 Lbs difference compared to heavier laptops has a significant impact in the real world in my experience.

Inside, you’ll find Intel’s new 12th generation processors based on Intel’s Alder Lake architecture, which we previously covered. We expect these laptops to provide vast performance improvements without battery life penalties.

The system can be loaded with 8/16/32GB of RAM and 256GB/512GB/1TB of SSD connectivity. Note the presence of a microSD port if you’re a Creative user who often exchanges content from a camera.

The 63Wh battery capacity of the 13.3-inch model is impressive for the chassis’ size. The 15.6 model has a marginally larger 68Wh capacity, so you’re not losing much battery life with the smaller chassis.

Samsung has included a seemingly better webcam and microphones, but I haven’t seen how good they really are, so we’ll have to see.

A more affordable Galaxy Book2 360 (non-Pro) would be compatible with more budgets, and it retains the same overall look and feel but with less expensive components and slightly different options.

EU to ban Russian state-backed media outlets RT and Sputnik

In a decision that could have a significant impact on how companies like YouTube moderate their platforms, the European Union announced it plans to ban Russian state media organizations. On Sunday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Russia Today (RT), Sputnik and their respective subsidiaries would “no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war.” The EU’s executive branch also plans to develop new tools to combat disinformation spread by those organizations. However, von der Leyen didn’t specify what those measures may involve.

At the same time, it’s unclear exactly how the EU will go about banning those organizations. Both RT and Sputnik maintain active YouTube channels. On Saturday, following a similar move from Facebook parent company Meta, the company said it would temporarily prevent a handful of Russian channels, including RT, from earning ad revenue from their content. So far, both YouTube and Meta have only restricted access to Russian state-run outlets in Ukraine, a decision Russia was quick to demand at least one of the companies reverse.
