Audio-Technica’s New Wireless Earbuds Promise 20 Hours Of Battery Life

True wireless earbuds are great because they’re so small and portable, but the problem with a lot of these earbuds would be battery life. For the most part, a lot of them offer pretty average battery life, but this is usually made up by the carrying case that lets users recharge on the go.

However, it seems that Audio-Technica are taking things to the next level with their new ATH-CKS50TW true wireless earbuds. According to the company, these earbuds are said to last for up to 20 hours at a time of continuous music playback when noise-cancellation has been turned off. Combine it with its charging case, we’re looking at about 50 hours in total.

The earbuds themselves feature active noise-cancellation that can be enabled or disabled with a touch of a button. It also comes with Sony 360 Reality Audio certification, supports Bluetooth 5.2, and are IPX4 rated so they should be usable in the gym or during a workout where you might get a bit sweaty.

While we suppose it doesn’t offer up any particularly fancy features or design, but at €170, we reckon it’s a pretty good deal for users who want a good performing pair of earbuds that will also be able to last them throughout the day.

Body Tracking Could Come To The Oculus Quest 2 In A Future Update

With some VR headsets, it can only track your head movement which is the easiest since the headset is worn on your head. Other devices like Meta’s Oculus Quest 2 can do more, like track your hands and finger movements thanks to the integration of wide-angle grayscale cameras.

However, it seems that it is possible that in a future update, body tracking could be added to the headset. This is according to a report from UploadVR where they spotted a screenshot on the Quest 2 developer blog that revealed that body tracking is an option that developers might be able to enable for users in the future.

The screenshot has since been deleted but it is already generating a ton of speculation as to what it could entail for the device. UploadVR speculates that it is possible that this body tracking feature might not necessarily be for the Quest 2, but rather a device codenamed Project Cambria, also believed to be called the Quest Pro, that will come with more sensors for eye and even face tracking.

This is because of the way the Quest 2’s cameras are positioned where it might not be practical or that useful to include body tracking. However, a headset that can do all of that would certainly be pretty cool. Either way, we’ll have to wait and see what kind of fruit this discovery will bear, so stay tuned for more updates.

First 'Dune: Spice Wars' gameplay trailer shows real-time combat

We got our first look at Dune: Spice Wars at the 2021 Game Awards, and now developer Shiro Games is giving fans of Frank Herbert’s seminal novels a better look at the project. In a gameplay trailer the studio shared on Tuesday, we see how a game of Spice Wars plays out. Unlike most 4X games, including Civilization VI and Humankind, Spice Wars is part real-time strategy game. That means you won’t have hundreds of turns where you can agonize over every possible move to decide how to lead your faction. That should make decisions like where to send your troops, what settlements to invade and how to engage in diplomacy more impactful.

Of course, each time you move your troops or fight in combat out in the open desert of Arrakis, you’ll need to keep in mind a Sandworm may come to snack on your units. Judging from the trailer, you’ll also have access to agents you can send to organizations like the Spacing Guild, CHOAM and even the Landsraad. When it arrives on Steam Early Access later this year, Spice Wars will feature four playable factions. Naturally, the noble House Atredies and fearsome House Harkonnen are among the groups you can lead.

That the first Dune game in two decades should include RTS elements is fitting. In 1992, Westwood Studios helped established the formula for the genre with the excellent Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty. While the popularity of RTS games has waned in recent years, Dune II’s legacy and influence persist. You wouldn’t have MOBAs like League of Legends if not for the work Westwood Studios and Blizzard did in the early ‘90s.

Nintendo Will Be Closing Its 3DS & Wii U Shops In 2023

With Nintendo essentially focusing on their Nintendo Switch console and its ecosystem, it’s not surprising to hear that the company will be shutting down its 3DS and Wii U shops come 2023.

Given that the Wii U is no longer in production, it makes sense, although we’re sure that owners of the 3DS system might be a little disappointed. According to Nintendo, “As of late March 2023, it will no longer be possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. It will also no longer be possible to download free content, including game demos.”

The company also notes, “As of May 23, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account in Nintendo eShop on Wii U or the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” They also add that starting August 29, 2022, users will no longer be able to use a Nintendo eShop Card to add funds, but download codes can still be redeemed until late March 2023.

Both the 3DS and Wii U are about a decade old and with Nintendo continuing to push out new Switch models, it is clear where the company sees they will be headed, so like we said, this announcement shouldn’t really come as a surprise.

Sony’s LinkBuds Earbuds Are Some Of The Most Unique We’ve Seen

When it comes to headphones and earphones, Sony is no stranger to that market. However, the company has since officially launched the LinkBuds which we think is quite a departure in terms of design that we typically expect from the company, but whether or not it’s good or bad will depend on your preference.

As you can see in the photo above, the LinkBuds are a pair of earbuds that features a ring where the earbuds would typically go into your ear. Apparently this creates a more comfortable experience that would let you wear the earbuds all day long, plus the fact that it doesn’t completely plug your ears means that you can also remain aware of your surroundings and when people talk to you.

The earbuds will feature the use of Sony’s in-house Integrated Processor V1 and will also sport a 12mm ring driver, and it also comes with built-in support for gestures and is smart enough to detect when you’re speaking to someone and can pause the music when you do, which is actually rather cool.

The earbuds also come with IPX4 support so getting it a bit sweaty while you workout shouldn’t be a problem. The earbuds themselves offer 5.5 hours per charge and comes with a charging carrying case that holds an additional 12 more hours. For those who are interested, the Sony LinkBuds are priced at €180/£150 and are expected to be available for purchase this month.

Cyberpunk 2077 For PS5, Xbox Series X/S Now Available

CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077 was originally released towards the end of 2020 where it was available on previous-gen consoles as well as the PC. It was one of the most highly anticipated games of the year and understandably so given all the demos and screenshots we’ve seen.

For those who own next-gen consoles and are looking forward to playing the game, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will now be available for the Sony PS5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S consoles. If you had bought the previous-gen version of the game, you’ll be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free, but for those who didn’t, you’ll have to buy it.

The gameplay will be essentially the same so the changes are mostly technical. For example, PS5 and Xbox Series gamers can look forward to features like ray tracing modes, where you can run the game at 4K at 60fps in performance mode, or 30fps when ray tracing is enabled. It will also offer up faster loading times, dynamic scaling, and the PS5 version will also take advantage of the controller’s haptic feedback.

Cyberpunk 2077 was launched to great hype and anticipation, but unfortunately the launch was marred with various bugs and issues that the studio had to spend quite a lot of time trying to fix, so hopefully most of those kinks have since been ironed out for PS5 and Xbox Series gamers.

Ukraine faces more cyberattacks amid Russian invasion fears

Ukraine is grappling with more cyberattacks as fears of an imminent Russian invasion reach their climax. Netblocks and Gizmodo report Ukraine’s defense ministry and two state-owned banks, Oshchadbank and Privatbank, have suffered denial-of-service attacks flooding their sites with traffic. The country’s armed forces website also appears to have suffered an attack. BuzzFeed‘s Christopher Miller described consequences for many Ukranians, including difficulties using some ATMs and other banking services.

The attacks weren’t directly attributed to Russia, but they came a month after Ukraine blamed its neighbor for a campaign that played havoc with dozens of government websites. The perpetrators used purely destructive malware disguised as ransomware to inflict significant damage. Russia has previously been accused of relying on cyberwarfare to disrupt and influence political rivals like the European Union and the US, although it has repeatedly denied involvement.

The concern, as you might imagine, is that Russia might be using cyberattacks like these to cause havoc ahead of an invasion the US claimed could happen as soon as tomorrow (February 16th). In theory, it might be more difficult for Ukraine to mount an effective response. The January attacks came and went without military action, however, and these latest incidents wouldn’t do much to thwart the Ukrainian military or its allies. If Russia is involved, the disruptions might represent pressure tactics to extract concessions, such as a promise not to join NATO.

Universal Audio is getting into premium microphones

Universal Audio, which has long been known for its premium audio interfaces and plugins, is moving into a new market as it has revealed its first microphones. As with the company’s other gear, expect to pay a pretty penny to get your hands on these.

Universal Audio SD-1 Dynamic microphone
Universal Audio

The SD-1 Dynamic is on the lower end of the initial lineup. Universal Audio says it’s a broadcast-style mic geared toward capturing speech, vocals and instruments. It includes a “cardioid polar pattern and selectable low cut and articulation boost switches.” It seems to be Universal Audio’s attempt to cut into the market share of Shure’s SM7B, a favorite among podcasters. You can pick up the SD-1 Dynamic starting today for $379.

Like the SD-1 Dynamic, the SP-1 Condenser has Apollo interface presets designed to help users attain professional-sounding audio quickly. The SP-1 comprises a pair of pencil microphones that Universal Audio designed to record drums, acoustic instruments and live performances.

The company says the SP-1 is designed to block out background noise and off-axis audio. The SP-1 Condenser will be available this summer and cost $499.

At the higher end of the scale is the Sphere L22 Modeling microphone. Universal Audio says that, when paired with the UAD Sphere L22 plugin, the device will be able to replicate 34 classic ribbon, condenser and dynamic mics.

It’s a “large-diaphragm modeling condenser that pairs a dual-capsule design for stereo or blended mono recording with award-winning mic modeling technology,” according to the company. With the ability to mimic many other “sought-after” microphones, it’s not too surprising that the Sphere L22 Modeling microphone doesn’t come cheap. It’s available now for $1,499.

Looking further ahead, Universal Audio plans to release a series of tube and solid-state condenser microphones. The very pretty Bock Series mics are designed by David Bock and should arrive this fall.

These products aren’t really designed for creators who are just starting out (unless they plan to splurge on a high-end setup out of the gate). However, these mics should at least give experienced podcasters, streamers and musicians who want to improve the sound quality of their output more options to consider.
