A burger-flipping robot may be coming to a White Castle near you

You can count burger-flipping robots as one pandemic innovation that’s here to stay. White Castle announced today that it will be bringing Flippy 2, a robot chef that can essentially perform the same tasks as a team of fry cooks, to 100 more locations this year. This amounts to roughly a third of White Castle restaurants nationwide, so it’s likely Flippy may become a permanent addition to this burger chain’s workforce.

Last fall the burger chain first teamed up with Miso Robotics, the makers of Flippy, to launch a pilot program in its Chicagoland location. The company then unveiled Flippy 2, the latest iteration of the chef robot, back in November. Now it appears that the robot chef is ready for prime-time.

It’s unlikely the average White Castle patron will notice the new robots when they first arrive. Since Flippy 2 is designed to perform “back-of-the-house” kitchen functions, that’s where you’ll find them. The robot uses AI to identify the type of food (such as burgers, chicken fingers, or fries), picks it up, cooks it, puts it in its own fry basket and finally puts it in a hot holding area.

But it’s possible your White Castle order may come out slightly faster than usual. Flippy 2 can dole out 60 baskets of food an hour, according to Miso Robotics’ website, or roughly 300 burgers a day. Unlike the earlier model, Flippy 2 can operate entirely without human intervention.

Miso Robotics is primarily crowdfunded; the company raised more than $50 million with more than 15,000 investors and is currently in its Series E funding round.

It’s no secret we’re in the middle of an AI-enabled cooking revolution. Miso Robotics has come out with a wing-making version of Flippy which Buffalo Wild Wings is currently testing, according to CNBC. Since robots also minimize human contact in the kitchen, they’re also used as a pandemic safety measure. Beijing is even using robot chefs to feed athletes and guests in its closed Winter Olympics bubble. It’s likely we’ll see more robotic innovations popping up in the restaurant industry, especially given recent labor shortages.

Samsung Uses Google Messages As Its Default Messaging App

Usually Android smartphone makers love to use their own custom launches and apps. This is because obviously it’s a good thing if they can lock users into their ecosystem, thus making it harder for customers to move away to a different brand in the future.

However, interestingly enough, it looks like Samsung has decided to embrace Google Messages as its default messaging app of choice for its US based smartphones. Google Messages has always been available for download for Android smartphones, but typically speaking users had to download it themselves.

However, with the Galaxy S22, Samsung has decided to preinstall the app for users and also made it the default messaging app. Why is this a big deal? This is because for iPhone users, Apple touts its Messages app and its iMessage service as one of the reasons to use an iPhone, but with Google pushing for RCS to become a more universal standard that can work cross-device and cross-platform, having a company as big as Samsung adopt it and make it the default could help with that.

Users are of course free to choose their own messaging app, so even with Google Messages as the default, if you’re not a fan of Google Messages or prefer using third-party messengers like WhatsApp or Telegram, those options are still available to you.

Netflix Announces Plans For A Live-Action BioShock Movie

Are you a fan of 2K’s BioShock series of video games? If you are, then you might be interested to learn that Netflix has announced that they will be making a live-action BioShock movie.

Unfortunately, not much is known about the movie at the moment other than the fact that Netflix is developing it, but seeing the rich lore and story behind the franchise, there should be a lot of details and information that Netflix should be able to pull from to make a compelling movie.

Netflix has actually been on a roll when it comes to video game content. The company has pushed out animated series based on classic titles like Castlevania. They have also tackled more modern day titles like Valve’s Dota 2 and Riot’s League of Legends, the latter of which was highly acclaimed.

They have also done some live-action series such as The Witcher, although to be fair the series is more based on the books than the game, but safe to say that Netflix has quite a bit of experience there. There is currently no word on who has been casted, who will be directing or writing the movie, or when it will be released, but we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more info.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Will Come With An S Pen Slot

One of the biggest changes Samsung made to its Galaxy S22 series is that with the Ultra model, Samsung actually introduced a dedicated S Pen slot, essentially making it a replacement for the company’s famed Note series.

Now according to a report out of Korea from The Elec, Samsung could be applying that to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. While nothing has been confirmed yet, it is largely expected that Samsung will be announcing a new Galaxy Z Fold handset later this year, and the report claims that a dedicated S Pen slot will be one of the changes we can expect.

However, it seems that the S Pen slot is pretty much the only design change we can look forward to. The report suggests that for the most part, the exterior of the phone and its dimensions will remain the same as its predecessor.

The report suggests that the interior foldable display will measure 7.56-inches, which is actually marginally bigger than its predecessor, while the external display will measure 6.19-inches, which is actually 0.01-inches smaller than the previous model, so by and large it should be pretty much the same phone.

Of course, most of the changes will probably be in the internals where the phone will most likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or the Exynos 2200, but we’ll have to wait for the announcement for the official details.

The MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar Might Not Be Completely Dead

With the launch of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, Apple basically killed the Touch Bar. We imagine that moving forwards, this will be the same for future MacBook Pro laptops, but apparently that is not the case because Apple could be keeping the Touch Bar around for one more generation.

This is according to a report from MacRumors who heard from their sources that with the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro refresh, apparently Apple will not be ditching the Touch Bar. This is because Apple will be keeping the same design as the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, which might explain why they could end up keeping the Touch Bar.

For those unfamiliar, one of the rumors we’ve been hearing is that Apple could be introducing a cheaper MacBook Pro that could sport the M2 chipset. This will be cheaper compared to the newer MacBook Pros, but will be in a similar vein to the 13-inch MacBook Pro that Apple introduced towards the end of 2020 where it was one of the first computers to use the M1 chipset.

In a way it makes sense, although given that it is clear Apple is done with the Touch Bar, we’re not sure how we feel about users still having a hardware feature that will probably no longer be supported by developers in the future. Either way, it’s probably best to take this with a grain of salt but hopefully we’ll learn more during Apple’s rumored event in March.

Twitter opens up its anti-harassment Safety Mode to millions more users

Twitter is expanding access to its Safety Mode by bringing the beta to around 50 percent of accounts in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. The company started testing the feature in September with a small number of people. It’s expanding the beta to additional English-speaking countries to gain more insights and look into ways of making further improvements.

Safety Mode is a setting that will automatically block accounts that Twitter thinks may be using harmful language. Those accounts won’t be able to interact with you for seven days. There’s a way for users to manually review the tweets and accounts Twitter found questionable, and to unblock that account if there wasn’t actually a problem. Accounts that users follow or interact with often are never autoblocked. The idea is to cut down on harassment and prevent people from having to go through the process of manually reporting offending tweets and accounts and waiting for Twitter to take action.

A Twitter spokesperson told Engadget that, since the company started testing the feature in September, it discovered some people need or want more help to snuff out unwanted interactions. Going forward, its systems will keep a look out for possibly harmful or uninvited replies, and prompt users in the beta to switch on Safety Mode if it believes they might benefit. The idea is that there’ll be fewer instances of people having to endure unwanted interactions.

Windows 11 Users In The US Can Now Access Android Apps

One of the interesting features and highlights of Microsoft’s Windows 11 is that it allows users to download and use Android apps on their PC. Prior to this, there was no official way of using Android apps on a PC short of mirroring your phone onto your PC which was also device dependent.

The feature has been in preview for a while now, but the good news is that Microsoft has since announced that all Windows 11 users in the US will now access the preview on their computers. According to Microsoft, “Windows 11 users in the U.S. can access the Amazon Appstore Preview1 in the Microsoft Store, and popular apps like Audible, Kindle, Subway Surfers, Lords Mobile, Khan Academy Kids and many more.”

Take note that the app store that is being used is from Amazon as opposed to Google Play, so the availability of some apps may vary. However, what Microsoft has done is actually take apps from Amazon’s Appstore and made them available through the Microsoft Store, so it’s not as if you need to access the Amazon Appstore in order to download these apps.

The update for Windows 11 users should already be in the process of being rolled out, so if this is something you might be interested in, then keep an eye out for the update on your PC.
