NVIDIA has reportedly abandoned its plans to purchase ARM

NVIDIA’s has reportedly abandoned its plans to purchase ARM, the UK-based business that licenses chip technology used in most smartphones. According to The Information, the deal collapsed on Monday, a year and a half after NVIDIA announced that it’s purchasing the Softbank-owned chip business for cash and stock then valued at $40 billion. Based on NVIDIA’s current stock prices, the deal would’ve been worth over $60 billion if it had gone through today.

The planned takeover, however, was met with opposition from the start. ARM customers Qualcomm and Microsoft objected to the deal, raising concerns that NVIDIA might prevent ARM from licensing its chip designs. The massive acquisition, which would’ve been the largest in the chip sector, was also intensely scrutinized by regulators. UK’s Competition & Markets Authority investigated it twice over its impact product prices and quality, as well as on its implications on national security.

In the US, the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the purchase over concerns that it would stifle competition for multiple technologies. Previous reports said NVIDIA has been preparing to walk away from the deal since early January, seeing as it has made little progress on convincing regulators to approve the purchase.

As The New York Times notes, NVIDIA repeatedly told authorities that it will keep ARM’s business model and even proposed to set up a separate licensing entity for its chip designs. It also said that it will license any ARM-based IP that it develops to all companies without discrimination. “There is no evidence that a combined NVIDIA and ARM would have either the ability or the incentive to harm competition,” its lawyers said in a response to FTC’s lawsuit.

ARM-owner Softbank will get a break fee of up to $1.25 billion as a result of the failed purchase, the sources said. Its Japanese parent company is also expected to take ARM public before the year ends, though it will likely have a tough time matching NVIDIA’s offer.

Fortnite Won’t Be Coming To The Steam Deck

fortnite season 2Valve’s Steam Deck is expected to launch by the end of the month, but gamers who are looking forward for another way of being able to enjoy games like Fortnite while on the go, it looks like you’re out of luck because it seems that Epic will not be supporting the console.

When asked on Twitter whether there are plans to basically bring Fortnite onto the Steam Deck, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney responded by saying no, there are no plans to do so. It is unclear why Epic won’t be supporting Fortnite on the Steam Deck, but it is bad news for gamers who are looking to play the game on the move.

With the issues that Epic is having with both Apple and Google, Fortnite’s availability on mobile is quite limited. It is essentially not playable on iOS devices, and those on Android will need to download the game via Epic’s own storefront instead of Google Play. There are streaming options, but that will require users to subscribe to services like NVIDIA’s GeForce Now.

Getting Fortnite onto the Steam Deck would have been the perfect opportunity for Fortnite to once again regain their share in the mobile space, so it does feel a bit wasted that the game won’t be supported. Who knows, perhaps this could change in the future, but for now, don’t get your hopes up.

Face ID More Likely To Launch On iMac Before MacBooks

With Touch ID being available on Apple’s Mac computers, we’re sure some are wondering if and when Face ID will be making its way onto the Mac as well. Given that the majority of Apple’s Mac computers come with built-in cameras, it certainly feels like a logical move.

However, according to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Face ID stands a higher chance of being introduced in the iMac or an external display first before the MacBook laptops. Apparently this has to do with the thinness of the MacBooks’ displays that could make it difficult to integrate the hardware.

With Apple’s iMacs being thicker, integrating Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system could be easier. According to Gurman, “At this point, the technology to embed Face ID into the thin MacBook displays doesn’t exist. So if Face ID comes to the Mac, I think it will be on an iMac or external monitor first. Apple has definitely been working on this, but time will tell if they launch it.”

That being said, Gurman does not confirm if the feature could launch in the upcoming iMac refresh, or if it could be a while before we see it, so don’t hold your breath waiting for Face ID in one of Apple’s upcoming Mac computers just yet.

Apple Acquires Startup That Can Generate Dynamic Soundtracks

Have you ever watched a scary movie but with the sound off? Sure, it might still be scary, but there is no doubt that having a creepy-sounding soundtrack will help elevate that experience. This is why being able to choose the right kind of music is important.

This is something that Apple seems to be interested in because according to a report from Bloomberg, the company has apparently acquired a company called AI Music. This is a startup that uses artificial intelligence to help create dynamic soundtracks as well as adaptive music.

Why would Apple be so interested in such technology? According to MacRumors, an example they gave could be where this dynamic and adaptive music tech could be used for workouts. Apple has Apple Fitness+ which lets users workout and sync their workouts with their Apple Watch, so why not include a potential feature in the future where your workout music could change according to your heart rate?

It could also potentially be used in other Apple products like iMovie, where instead of users trying to find a suitable background audio, the app could make recommendations based on the video. There have also been rumors that future AirPods could come with health tracking features, so imagine Apple Music being able to adapt to what you’re doing. It’s an interesting acquisition but only time will tell what Apple truly intends to use it for.
