DJI Mini 2 Used To Smuggle Drugs Over The US-Mexico Border

Drones were most definitely not designed for this, but it looks like a drone has been used to smuggle drugs over the border again. We have heard multiple stories of how drones have been used to smuggle contraband and even aided in attempted prison escapes, but what’s interesting in this particular case is the drone that was used.

According to a recently released search warrant from the Drug Enforcement Administration, it seems that back in October 2021, Tecate’s Campo Border Patrol Station spotted a drone flying over the 25-foot fence before a gray Mercedes arrived and a man attempted to collect the drone, but was intercepted by law enforcement before he could do so.

The drone that was used is the DJI Mini 2. This is a tiny drone compared to regular drones and isn’t necessarily designed to transport goods. The drone itself weighs 249g, but the package it was carrying was actually heavier at 259g. However, for a pretty short trip which is just over the border’s wall, it is possible that it could actually be used to carry more than its own weight.

Law enforcement officials are now looking to pull data from the drone like the data from its microSD card, but it is unclear if they will be requiring additional data from the drone’s manufacturer.

Google Stadia’s Service Is Being Sold As ‘Google Stream’ To Some Companies

google stadiaGoogle isn’t exactly known as a gaming company, so it was interesting to see the company try and step into the gaming space with Google Stadia, a game streaming service that allows gamers to purchase games and stream it on pretty much any device they want, wherever and whenever they want.

However, it is possible that Stadia was only meant to be a demo of Google’s technology and that the greater goal was to provide a backend to companies. According to a report from Business Insider (paywall), Google has started to sell Stadia’s streaming technology to other companies such as Bungie and Peloton where they have rebranded it as “Google Stream”.

Keep in mind that Google is not getting rid of Stadia. Back in 2021, Google confirmed that they would be selling Stadia’s technology as a service to other companies, meaning that companies who wanted to offer game streaming could simply pay Google to use their services instead of building their own.

It would be similar to how Google Workspace lets companies purchase their own domains but still use Gmail’s interface. With Peloton, the company is reportedly using Google Stream to help stream games on its fitness bikes, but the situation is less clear with Bungie. The report claims that Google was in talks with Bungie last year, but now that Sony will be acquiring them, it is unclear how this will proceed.

Apple Music’s Free Trial Period Has Been Reduced

Apple and Spotify are currently both competing in the music streaming space. Unlike Spotify, Apple Music does not offer a free listening tier, instead they offer users a free three month trial period, which all things considered is pretty good when compared to other paid streaming services.

However, that will no longer be the case for the most part. Initially discovered by Macotakara and confirmed by 9to5Mac, it seems that Apple will be reducing the free trial period from three months to just one month. This means that it is more or less in line with what the rest of the industry is offering, so it is neither good nor bad.

That being said, there are some exceptions. Apple says that customers who purchase an eligible audio product that includes the AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation and 3rd generation), AirPods Max, HomePod, HomePod mini, Beats Fit Pro, Beats Studio Buds, Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro will get a free six month trial.

So if you are planning on purchasing any of those devices, you will be able to activate the six month trial period, after which it will become a paid subscription at $9.99 a month. It is unclear why Apple decided to reduce the trial period, but perhaps the service has matured enough where Apple might be trying to quickly convert free users into paid ones.

The ‘Babylon 5’ reboot will survive the sale of The CW

Toward the end of last year, it was revealed that seminal ‘90s sci-fi series Babylon 5 would be rebooted by creator J. Michael Straczynski for the CW. Not long after, however, and WarnerMedia put its youth-skewed channel up for sale, putting the show’s shot at a second life in jeopardy. Today, however, Straczynski has revealed on his Patreon that CW head Mark Pedowitz has personally guaranteed the pilot’s survival.

Rather than being shot and produced in preparation for a late-2022 launch date, says Straczynski, it’ll now be top of the pile for the 2023 slate. “The project is very much alive,” he added, even if “we will have to wait a little longer,” to see it hit the screen. Given that Pedowitz is apparently a big fan of the show, hopefully the postponement can only be seen as a positive despite all of the turmoil that surrounds the channel.

As someone once kinda said, the Babylon 5 reboot is all around us, waiting in moments of transition, to be born in a moment of revelation. No-one knows the shape of the reboot, or if it’ll get a full five-year commitment, we know only that it is always born in the pain of having to wait another year to see it.
