Google Confirms Its Nest Battery Products Won’t Charge In The Cold

Batteries typically don’t like extreme temperatures, whether it’s too hot or too cold. Unfortunately this can result in some inconveniences especially when the weather isn’t something you can control, as quite a number of Nest users are finding out.

According to various user reports, many owners of Google’s Nest products that are powered by battery have been complaining that their devices are either experiencing severe battery drain, slow charging, or it won’t charge at all. Google has since confirmed that this is something they’re aware of and have published a support page about it.

According to Google, “At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the battery can still power your device, but it won’t charge. It may also drain more quickly than usual. At temperatures close to -4°F (-20°C), your battery may have less than half the life that it has in warm weather.”

The company also notes that with devices like the battery powered Nest Doorbell, “At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the doorbell can continue to work, but the battery will drain because it can’t be charged. If the battery drains completely, the doorbell will shut down, and you’ll need to bring it inside to be charged.”

Google has also since stated that they are working on a new Nest Doorbell that works exclusively when wired, which should solve this problem, but we’re not sure what this means for those who already own the device.

$1.7 Million Worth Of NFTs Stolen In Phishing Attack

If you’ve ever wanted to trade NFTs, whether you’re trying to buy them or sell them, OpenSea is probably one of the biggest and most popular platforms for that. Unfortunately, it appears that the platform has been targeted by a phishing attack that has since resulted in $1.7 million worth of NFTs being stolen.

Now, it should be made clear that OpenSea itself wasn’t hacked, but rather its users were targeted in a phishing attack. This attack was sent to the platform’s users in the form of an email designed to look like an OpenSea Community Update.

In the email, it asked users to migrate their Ethereum listings to a new smart contract, and since OpenSea had announced their own smart contracts the day before, this email didn’t look entirely out of place.

According to the reports, 32 OpenSea users were affected by the email and signed the contract which contained a malicious payload that essentially signed over their NFTs to the attacker. 32 users doesn’t seem like a lot, but given how much NFTs are valued these days, it was said to be worth $1.7 million.

The good news is that some of the NFTs that were stolen have since been returned, while some have been sold by the attacker. The company is now investigating the incident to determine how the attack took place.

These Are All The New Macs We Can Expect This Year

If you’re looking for a new Mac computer to buy in 2022, then you’re in luck because it seems that this year will be one of the biggest refreshes in Mac computers that we can look forward to. Or at least that’s what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes in his latest Power On newsletter.

According to the oft-accurate journalist, he believes that we can look forward to seven new Mac computers from Apple this year. This includes a brand new more powerful Mac mini powered by an M1 Pro chipset, and also another model powered by the M2. Then there is also going to be a refresh of the 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2020 where it will be powered by the M2 chipset.

Then there will also be an update to the 24-inch iMac that will also be sporting the M2 chipset, followed by a redesigned MacBook Air which will also be using Apple’s new (and rumored) M2 chipset.

For those who want something a bit more powerful, Gurman reiterates claims that Apple could launch a larger iMac Pro later in the year where it will be using the M1 Pro and Max chipset options, and also a half-size Mac Pro that will actually be powered by 2-4 M1 Max chipsets.

Needless to say that this should be taken with a grain of salt, but if you’re looking for a new Mac to buy, this year could have plenty of options for you to choose from.

Wordle Stuffed With Ad Trackers After NYT Acquisition

Last month, the New York Times announced that they would be acquiring popular word game Wordle. The company stated that they would be keeping the game free to play, but from a business perspective, that doesn’t really make sense because why would they spend so much money to acquire a game that they won’t be monetizing?

It turns out that maybe the company was hoping to leverage the data that the people playing the game would be submitting unknowingly. This is according to a tweet by Ben Adida who discovered that following the acquisition by the New York Times, the new Wordle’s website is stuffed with all kinds of trackers.

For those unfamiliar, trackers are a popular way for companies to track what you’re doing not just on their website, but subsequent websites and other web-related activities that you do after. The idea is that by being able to better understand your browsing habits, they’ll be able to serve up more relevant ads to you.

Over the years companies such as Apple have built protections that are designed to stop these trackers or limit them so that they cannot gather too much information about users once they leave the app or the website. That being said, the inclusion of these trackers doesn’t really take away the fun of the game, but it might be something that more privacy-conscious users may want to take note of.

Oppo Announces Three Year Partnership With Hasselblad

Over the years, we’ve seen how handset makers have teamed up with camera brands in a partnership that is supposed to help improve their smartphone cameras. For example there was Nokia’s partnership with Zeiss all those years ago, then Huawei with Leica, and then Vivo with Zeiss.

Some of you might also recall that in 2021, OnePlus announced that they would be teaming up with Hasselblad for something similar. Now it looks like Oppo is hopping on board that train with a three-year partnership with Hasselblad of their own. Keep in mind that Oppo and OnePlus are under the same parent company, BBK Electronics, so we can’t say we’re too surprised here.

However, we have to wonder if this could result in a conflict of interest or if maybe this could be some sort of synergistic partnership. In any case, Oppo and Hasselblad’s partnership is expected to bear fruit with the upcoming new Oppo Find X handset, which could be known as the Find X5.

According to Oppo, “OPPO and Hasselblad will now work together to further develop advanced imaging solutions through R&D collaboration, which aims to provide users with more natural colors and a more refined imaging experience. Leveraging Natural Color Calibration with Hasselblad, OPPO also targets to bring the most natural skin tone possible to its portrait photography.”
