Intel chips remain the bedrock CPU solution in the PC industry. Now the company has set its sights on crypto mining, and that’s a pretty big deal.
A malicious software update that damaged tens of thousands of modems across Europe anchored the cyberattack on a satellite network used by Ukraine’s government and military.
Waymo is now operating fully driverless cars in more than one city. The Alphabet-owned brand has started trials of self-driving Jaguar I-Pace EVs in San Francisco with no backup drivers. The tests are limited to employees hailing rides in the company’s early service area, but this still represents a major milestone — the company claimed in a message to Engadget that it was the first anywhere to offer autonomous ride-hailing in two different territories.
You’ll also see an expanded footprint in Arizona. Waymo said it will expand fully autonomous rides to downtown Phoenix, starting with employees. Members of the public in the Trusted Tester program can hail rides “soon after,” Waymo said.
It’s not certain when Waymo might offer trips to the general public in San Francisco. The company recently received permission to charge for self-driving rides in California, but only as long as there’s a backup driver aboard. Still, both rollouts indicate greater confidence on Waymo’s part. It’s more willing to test its autonomous system in densely-populated areas (where traffic and roadwork can be huge headaches), and without leaning as much on human safety nets.
We’ve all heard of games that are pay-to-win, where developers sell in-game items that will give players a boost that will help them progress further in the game, but recently, there has been a rise in a new model called play-to-earn. This utilizes cryptocurrency and NFTs where players can “invest” in a game, play it, and the more they play and the more successful they are, they can actually earn crypto that they can then sell and make real-world money.
One of the more popular titles we’ve been hearing about is Axie Infinity, although unfortunately it seems that the game was hacked and hackers have made off with 173,600 ETH, which based on the current conversion is roughly a little over $600 million, making it one of the biggest crypto heists we’ve heard about to date.
It seems that user error played a part in allowing this hack to happen. What happened was that back in 2021, the developers of the game asked Axie DAO to help distribute free transactions to its players as they weren’t able to manage the user load themselves. Unfortunately, after the help period had ended, the allowlist access was not revoked.
This allowed the hackers to take control of the four validator nodes on the Ronin network, a sidechain used to allow players to access the Ethereum blockchain, and forge the withdrawal requests. It seems that only when a user attempted to withdraw 5,000 ETH that they realized that they were hacked.
According to the game’s developers, “ETH and USDC deposits on Ronin have been drained from the bridge contract. We are working with law enforcement officials, forensic cryptographers, and our investors to make sure there is no loss of user funds. This is our top priority right now.”

If you’re curious as to what Microsoft might have in store for the future, then you might want to tune into the company’s upcoming Build event which according to Microsoft, is set for the 24th of May, 2022 which they have announced on the Build website.
It is unclear what Microsoft will be announcing at the event as no schedule has been posted yet, but as XDA points out, based on previous Build events, we’ll probably see a keynote given by Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella, followed by various technical sessions where Microsoft will cover changes they’ll be making to its services like Windows, Azure, and so on.
However, keep in mind that the Build conference is typically software focused, similar to Apple’s WWDC, meaning that if you were hoping to see new products announced like maybe follow ups to Microsoft’s own Surface tablets, laptops, and smartphones, you might be disappointed (it is possible, but don’t get your hopes up).
Also, the event will be held virtually so if you were hoping to attend in person, it doesn’t look like that will be the case this year (perhaps next year). As a result of the pandemic, many companies are choosing to host their events virtually as pre-recorded sessions, and since the pandemic isn’t quite over yet, Microsoft’s decision for the Build 2022 event doesn’t really come as a surprise.

One of the benefits of using a PC instead of a phone or a tablet is that PCs generally offer up better multitasking. For example, you could have one window running a video and you can switch between them while doing other things. On smartphones or tablets, it’s not as straightforward as it is dependent on the app.
For those who are subscribed to YouTube TV, you will be happy to learn that according to an announcement by YouTube, they have revealed that picture-in-picture support for YouTube TV on iOS is finally being rolled out to users. The rollout seems to be done in stages and is server-side enabled, meaning that even if you have the latest version of the app, it doesn’t necessarily mean you will get the feature straightaway.
iPhone & iPad users 🔊
We’re happy to share that picture-in-picture is now rolling out to your iOS 15+ devices. Simply select a video to watch and swipe ⬆️ from the bottom of the screen to return to the device’s homepage. The video can scale down and move across your screen.

It is actually slightly disappointing that it took YouTube this long to bring the feature to its iOS app, especially since it’s been a while since iOS officially supported picture-in-picture, but we suppose better late than never. Also, it’s a bit odd that YouTube TV is supporting the feature but not the main YouTube app, where picture-in-picture was supposed to be one of the perks of being a YouTube Premium subscriber.
In any case, if you do stream a fair bit on YouTube TV on your iOS device, then keep an eye out for this feature which should be making its way to users as we speak.

Universal Audio's Spark subscription service brings audio production plugins to the Mac
Posted in: Today's ChiliFor those who want to try their hand at audio production, one of the most significant barriers to entry is the cost of equipment and instruments. That Korg Minilogue you have in mind for a killer synthwave track? Even a pre-owned one will set you back about $400. In recent years, audio plugins you can use with your favorite digital audio workstation have made it more affordable to dabble in audio production, but even those can be expensive.
Universal Audio wants to make its audio plugins more accessible with a subscription service called UAD Spark. Priced at $20 per month, the package includes some of the company’s most popular plugins, including ones that replicate the Neve 1073 preamp and Studer A800 tape recorder. You’ll also find a handful of exclusives. One such exclusive emulates the Opal Morphing Synthersizer.
But what’s likely to make UAD Spark compelling to a lot of people is that you don’t need one of the company’s Apollo or Volt audio interfaces to take advantage of the service. All the plugins included in Spark will run natively on your Mac (and Windows machine come this fall). And if you already own a Volt audio interface, you’ll get a free 30-day trial to the service. Should you decide to subscribe, any plugins you already own will be available through Spark.
